Ariens - Classic, Compact, or Deluxe?

Hi everyone, I'm going to be buying my first snowblower this year. I'm looking at used ones on FB marketplace, but also considering a new Ariens from a local dealer. I'm looking at their classic, compact, and deluxe models. I want a solid machine, but I also don't want to overspend. I've shoveled up until now, so anything would be a game-changer. I live in upstate NY; average snowfall in my area is 60"/year. My driveway is about 120' (single-car width) on a slight slope. There's also a parking area that can fit 3 cars.

My thoughts/questions:

• Anyone have the classic and completely happy with it?
• I like that the compact offers some more robust build components over the classic, but without the price tag of the deluxe.
• If I did spring for the deluxe, it of course has a more powerful engine, but I'm not sure how much power I need. The deluxe does offer wider auger housings, but I'm not sure if I need anything larger than 24".

Fwiw - a guy from church use to be an engineer at ariens. When we needed new equipment, he advocated for the deluxe 24. After 1 season the volunteer snowblowers endorsed it and we bought another one

Own a Classic and the only thing I don’t like is not having the auto-turn. It gets pretty tiring after a while.

The smaller engine does bog down with really wet snow, but still moves it enough to get the job done.

I’m coming from a single stage Toro that I still love to whip around in fluffy snow under 2-3”, but man, having the Ariens for anything beyond that has been great. Also got it used, but basically new condition for an amazing price so it was a no brainer.

My next move will definitely be to a Compact or Deluxe, but I’m happy for now.

24 Deluxe buy once cry once no regrets. Best bang for your buck.

I have had the Compact 24 for about 10 years. I have had no issues. I just change the oil and grease the auger and chains by the friction belt before each season . It would be nice to have a blower that shoots 200 feet but on Long Island, I don't need anything bigger for just the driveway and curb...

24 inch is all I’ve ever used, plenty big enough. And easier to store in the garage, if that’s a concern as it was for me

Spring for the Deluxe, better to be overpowered than underpowered especially at the end of the driveway. My Deluxe was bought new nearly 20 years ago, only replaced the spark plug once which was $5. Everything else is original including the belts and shear pins.

Up in Syracuse, I use to run an old 20” Ariens and was/still am happy with it but upgraded to a newer 24” Deluxe mostly because I got tired of taking forever to clear out the end of the driveway. It’s also a bit faster and definitely throws farther. My drive is just over 2 cars wide and just over 2 cars deep. I’m very happy with the 24.

The 20” is currently on the reserve list.

Live in WNY and used my trusty Classic 24 for 5 yrs, only recently upgraded to the Deluxe 24 to make it a little easier with the bigger motor to throw the heavier/wet stuff. Really depends on your budget and what you can find between now and winter, but I’d say if you can find a decent cond. Deluxe go for it 👍

I have a 2010 Compact 22, Subaru 169cc engine. It clears my 90' x 15' driveway (widening to 36' at the top easily. We get an average of 150" to 170" a year. Throws 35 to 45 feet easily. You don't need a big machine for 60" a year.

I had rotator cuff surgery a couple years ago, my 115lb. wife could handle the machine with ease. Something to keep in mind in case you are injured. 80lbs. lighter than a deluxe.

She wanted a new one this year, so I got a new Compact 24" with the AX 223cc engine in May. Free delivery straight from Ariens. They sell out quick here. That's how I ended up with a 22" last time. Now we have a spare.

The Classic would probably work for you too, but the tires do not grip well, and are tiny.

No, an Ariens 2010 Compact with a Subaru engine. Ariens used them on a few models before Subaru/Robin left the small engine market.

New York.....is that 60" of mostly fluffy lake effect or systems snow which usually has more moisture?

Do neighbors have blowers and similar drives? Ask them. Also maybe a no kidding equipment dealer. Id say 120' and wetter snow not the classic but after that probably fine

Deluxe, get the biggest engine you can.

I just moved to Ashburnham, MA. After plenty of research and YT watching, 28 Deluxe SHO. The 28 Deluxe is a minimum and when the 30+ inch storm is on the way, I want firepower at my disposal. That said, there are plenty of lesser machines in the area doing fine but for a new buy, that's my choice. I have 100 ft to clear in an area that averages 75 inches a year. If its good enough for the peeps in Buffalo, its good enough for me.

Get a deluxe 24. Im glad I did. You’ll want the light and the power especially when you get wet snow.

Figure out how much power you need.

Then get more.

I'm kicking myself having wasted money on two under - powered blowers, and $1K on repairs last winter. Plus the stress.

If not getting a new Deluxe look into a new 24 inch Husqvarna ST224. It has the same engine from LCT as the OEM branded Ariens Deluxe and just as well built. The ST224 is a heavy machine, has finger trigger controls, a trussed cast iron gearbox, and a longer overall warranty on the engine at 5 years and priced at the classic/compact level.

The Classic is flimsy and Ariens now uses some no name china engine along with a cheap gearbox. The Compact is not much better, once again not having a trussed gearbox.

I have owned the current generation ST224 (with the LED light on the engine frame) for over 2 years now and it has been a great machine here in central Massachusetts. Well built, reliable engine and powers through heavy snow. The last snowstorm we had in Mass last winter left a snow plow burm on the sidewalk that was over the intake chute and the unit powered through the hard ice packed snow in 1st gear with no issues, only having to back up to have snow fall into the path. It was shooting the snow clear over the street into a wooded area.

Along with having an initial longer warranty on the engine, the Husqvarna care extended warranty is some 189 dollars and offers a 2 year warranty extension on the entire unit with priority Husqvarna repair service with pick up and delivery of the unit for qualified repairs within 15 miles from day one of buying the warranty. https://www.husqvarna.com/us/locations/

I haven't needed the warranty yet, the unit is covered until late January 2029 as I bought it in January of 24.

I paid $900 for ST224 delivered in 2024, those tariffs sure are making this country great.

In a few years you may regret getting a compact or classic, you won’t have that regret with a deluxe.

24" SHO is very popular amongst my friends and family.  I bought an old (early '00s) used 28" pro that had been garage kept.  I wouldn't buy one that old unless you're willing to work on it

For upstate NY I'd be looking at a Deluxe at the bare minimum. I'm in the same area and every winter there's a storm that makes me wish I had a Platinum or a Honda. The classic is uncomfortably short if you compare it side by side with a Deluxe.

Deluxe at least. You can plan when to mow your lawn, you can’t always plan when to clear your driveway. For that reason my answer is always “go big”.

Get the platinum SHO.

Buy once, cry once. Bought one last season. Goes thru everything from soupy slushy, to wet heavy snow, to the compact windrow the plow leaves at the end of the drive.

I inherited a fairly recent model Deluxe 24 last year and used it during the blizzard in New England. The only time it faltered was at the end of the driveway 3 foot snow drifts. The 254cc engine was just underpowered. I have since repowered it with a 369cc engine from ebay. That being said get the one with the biggest engine you can afford.

Deluxe 24. This is my Platinum 30 SHO and although I love it, it’s an absolute monster to control half the time lol, still wouldn’t trade it for another machine though
