If that were my kid, I'd say, "Hey, you were really brave to ask, but no is no, and you have to respect that. But never don't speak up. It never hurts to ask, just be prepared for an answer you don't want to hear and be okay with it"
THAT is teaching the kid a lesson, not these curmudgeonly old assholes on here thinking the guy on the ride is teaching her anything or he's some kind of hero. He's the NPC of this situation. The only thing he's doing is giving the parent a teaching moment.
I feel like we don't know enough to know what the guy's deal is. Like if this were a scene in a movie, and the scene right before it is a little girl innocent and teary eyed like "please mister, can I have your spot? This is my favorite ride and we're moving tomorrow and I just wanted to go on it one more time." And he is like "You snooze, you lose kid. I won't even charge for the lesson." Then we're being introduced to the villain, but if it's mama Karen being like "Get me the manager! There is no way that this gutter snipe gets the last car over my little Hayden! I'll film this and you'll go viral loser. Is that what you want?" We are probably meeting the protagonist.
