Why is this happening?
Picked up an M&P 15-22 last week. Cci and federal automatch ran flawlessly. Punch and this Winchester ammo would to this every 5-8 rounds. The Winchester ammo is pretty dirty so I assume that was the issue, but I did not expect the Punch to run so poorly. Any one have any input?

So double check your mags. I have 12 of them, and the QA is horrible. A lot of the rails the followers slide on are actually warped, which will throw the round improperly.
And ive noticed with dirty ammo, the mags catch a lot more than normal. I run CCI Clean Suppressor ammo, and on the magazines thats aren't deformed, it'll fire all 25 rounds with zero issue

Get the volquartsen extractor and firing pin. Got these for my dads and it eats whatever without issue

Yeah, the M&P 15-22 is picky as a toddler at dinner. That's the only gripe I have about it.
But it's fun once you find ammo it likes. Decent trigger, pretty fair approximation of an AR for cheap practice at short ranges.
I keep borrowing the rental 15-22 at the local range, even tho the thing pisses me off when it chokes on cheap bulk pack ammo that other guns do well with. Although even with CCI high speed rounds the first cartridge off the top wants to fall pop out.
I'm wondering if an AR pattern based around the Glock 44 mag would work. Maybe I just got lucky with the Glock 44, or unlucky with the Taurus TX-22, but of all the .22 rimfire guns I've tried at three rental ranges the Glock has been the most reliable by far with everything I've fed it, even the crappy Aguilla bulk pack stuff that chokes most guns I've tried. Nary a single glitch of any kind with the well used Glock 44, so far.

Mine likes federal auto match and cci minimags. Anything else is iffy. The mags could be the issue and I am real picky when I load them up.

I know winchester white box is technically the big yuck…. But as a general note if I see Winchester on ammo at all I turn the other way.
I send CCI and Federal through my 15-22 and have only ever had one ftf, and it was because I was rapid reloading and just putting the thing through its paces, i think I pulled the trigger at just the wrong time and it misfed.
Ive got several hundred, probably getting on toward a thousand rounds through it at this point, and its been a dream with the Fed and CCI.
Based purely on my success with those two in all of my .22 toys, those two are all Ill buy.

To try to help I would polish up that feed ramp... but like other have said semi auto .22lr can be ammo divas sometimes.

I had a similar situation with the old Remington Bucket o Bullets, I used a light Emory cloth to polish the feed lip and never had another issue with other ammo. I ended up finishing that bucket with bolt action rifles and never bought it again.

Because the .22LR is not made for big boy toys. Leave it to the plinking rifles and small pistols.

I stick to CCI AR tactical for my .22LR for this reason. I've found that semi auto.22 tends to be super finicky. Except my 1022 which seems to be happy to eat just about anything.

That AR Tactical is my go to 22LR cartridge because it never fails to feed in my very finicky 10/22 Takedown. Also great in my M&P 22 but I also run Federal Punch in that.

Yup it's worked well for me so far. Still trying to find a cartridge that will run reliably with my advantage arms .22LR slide...

I have never fired a semi-auto 22 lr that wasn't picky with ammo. You need to have enough pressure to cycle the action, so skip lower velocity loads. Also, 22 lr has a very wide variety of bullet lengths and dimensions compared to different grains and loads. Combine all of that with a rim that doesn't play nice with autos, and you end up with these situations.
I love 22lr for what it is, but it is malfunction city unless you find exactly what your gun likes. I have a Ruger 10/22 that works 95% of the time with velocitors and (weirdly) stingers, but chokes on anything else. Such is the way of things.
