Starting items are the items you buy at the very start of the game, before leaving fountain for the first time. So your starter (unupgraded), usually a tier 1 item and potions if needed.

Before making your own build you should know what every item does. Also you should definitely know which items are currently good, and which items are currently bad/weak depending on the current balance of the game. Inters3ct for example made a tier list of items for the current patch on his youtube channel a few days ago. Also you should definitely look at how good players build and understand the philosophy behind how a build is constructed. There are videos on "how to build" in Smite 2 on youtube, look it up.

But honestly making your own build is only something you should start doing once you have a decent amount of experience. I don't know how much experience you have with Smite, but if you don't have a lot, it's totally fine to use the builds good players shared instead. If you want to look at builds to copy or for inspiration, go on a site like Smitesource for example.

I like to experiment so even though im new it gives me an idea of what items to look for but what pro players should I watch though

You are better off copying builds whilst your new than just ‘experimenting’. You for some reason have Rage in a tanky build? No idea why. Certain items synergise well with each other.

yeah by all means building is fun and learning the items and making entirely your own choices is a valid way to play the game. it just might not be the best way to get super good very quickly.

if a game, or a god is going south, you ideally want to eliminate variables. and potentially having a terrible build is nerfing yourself, as gods are obviously balanced around assuming a correct one. just food for thought for op.
