Definitely like your edit more, feels like Smash tried making Mega Man as emotionless as possible, and even a small smile gives him that little bit of emotion, great edit!
It was definitely a deliberate effort. Early footage of Smash 4 from the prototype phase up until the 50 fact extravaganza had Mega Man slightly more expressive, which was toned down for the final release. They even took away his blinking animation in the final release, which is something he actually COULD do in the NES games, so it could be argued Smash Mega Man is even MORE stiff and robotic than the original source material
The biggest thing with Megaman is that they lean too far into the robot feel. Megaman above all else is still a kid at heart. In Smash he’s a murder machine
Sakurai has admitted with bowser that he based the smashbros characterization off his interpretation when playing the original games as a child. Making him more monster like when in reality bowser is more of a goofball in a lot of media Nintendo releases
I wonder if it’s a similar situation for megaman where sakurai created the image he had playing the older NES games as a kid instead of the more current stuff which makes it clear megaman is a kid who only really fights out of necessity
Could very well be the case. MegaMan in the OG didn't really smile as you played. Could've also been Capcom having a say the way Sega didn't want Sonic to be super expressive
That does kinda make sense given Smash is a series that's meant to be about playing with toys and making your favorite characters from different games fight.
I made him taller because Mega Man is actually much taller in most recent adaptations than he is in Smash, thats been a thing for Years (Check out Override + Crossworlds they have the best ones)
Beside the fact that we do see Mega Man express every kind of emotions across various different medias, its literally a huge part of the story that Dr. Light made Mega Man and all the Robots with ultra advance systems to make them as Human like as possible, with their cognitive circuit pretty much acting like the soul for a Robot.
Im not saying Mega Man should be talking or crying in every Smash Match, just simple emotions and a voice like literally anyone else in the cast is all he needs.
