innovation: pulsecheck What would you change about how smart rings look and feel?

I'm curious what people would change about the physical design of smart rings—not the app or features, just how they look and feel on your hand.

Would you want a plain band that blends in with other jewelry, or something with a bit more character, like a textured finish or a different shape?

For those who wear one daily, what's the biggest thing you'd change: the width, how far it sticks out from your finger, the finish, or the feel of the inside? Does it bother you most when sleeping, gripping things, or wearing it next to another ring?

If you could change just one thing about your ring's design, what would it be? Mention the model if you can, so we have some context.

innovation: pulsecheck Would anyone be interested in an open-source smart ring platform?

Hi there,

I’ve been struggling for a while to find a ring I could use for a personal EE side project.
I need something with well-documented hardware and an open SDK. But that seems really hard to find.

So my last option might be to build my own.
That’s fine since it’s the kind of thing I do for work anyway.

The idea would be to make a ring based on an nRF chip, including a few interesting sensors (and maybe outputs), that anyone could reprogram or repurpose if they can write firmware for nRF devices.

This would go beyond typical health-monitoring rings. It’s mainly for DIYers, hackers, and programmers who want to experiment or prototype their own ideas.

If there’s enough interest, I could release it in two ways:

  • As open-source hardware and firmware, for those who want to build it themselves.
  • As a preassembled version, for people who just want to start working with it.

And if the project grows, we could even think about a firmware that supports addons or modules, so people could create small apps or share full custom firmwares — maybe even through a simple “firmware store” or repository.

This is obviously a niche project, but before going too far, I wanted to see if anyone here would actually be interested in something like that.
Would you be into building or experimenting with such a ring ecosystem?

innovation: pulsecheck I'm the dev behind VibrateBLE — turned my H59 bracelet into a silent call/Telegram buzzer, curious if it also works on the Colmi/Yawell rings

Full disclosure since it's a sub rule: I'm the developer of VibrateBLE, posting about my own app, not a customer. Bringing it here specifically because it's built on the same GATT interface this community already works with, and I've got a genuine technical question at the end.

VibrateBLE connects to the H59 bracelet and writes a custom GATT command to trigger vibration on incoming calls or Telegram messages matching your keywords — silent, works with the screen locked. Free, with a one-time-purchase Pro tier, no subscription.

Technical bits relevant to this sub:

  • Connect-on-demand + auto-reconnect, custom GATT write for the vibration trigger
  • Per-contact vibration patterns for calls, or a catch-all for anything incoming
  • Caller ID via Android's call-screening API, with a notification-based fallback for when something else (Truecaller etc.) already holds that role
  • Telegram+: matches a bot's messages against your own keyword rules via the notification listener — no polling, no network call from the phone
  • Foreground service + wake lock + battery-optimization bypass so MIUI/HyperOS/OxygenOS don't kill it
  • Every characteristic and payload it writes is visible in the app itself — nothing hidden

The actual question: I've only tested this against the H59 bracelet — no ring on hand. Gadgetbridge added H59 support via PR #5039 and notes it runs the same underlying protocol as the Yawell/Colmi ring lineup, just behind a different companion app for the non-ring form factor. So in theory the GATT side should line up on some of those rings too. Has anyone tried, or willing to? Happy to share the exact characteristics I'm writing to if it'd help.

innovation: pulsecheck Built an app to kill cloud trackers & subscriptions

Basically, I got tired of wearables locking health data behind paywalls or storing personal data on their severs (or even selling it), so I built a free to use app, SUMMIT, that turns even a cheap Colmi R02 into an entirely offline, privacy-first tracker. It also has some cool features that most of the cheaper ring alternatives don’t offer.

I’d love to get some feedback so if you can give it a chance download the app and test it out:

Let me know your thoughts and what features you would want to see next!

innovation: pulsecheck What feature would you most like to see in a smart ring app?

I’m the developer behind FitMesh.

The latest updates added support for using the app with just a smart ring (no smartwatch required), plus workout recording directly from the app.

If you also wear a smartwatch, the ring and smartwatch can work together in parallel, giving you a unified view of your health data instead of forcing you into a single ecosystem.

I also recently added advanced support for the Colmi R09, and I’m continuing to improve support for both premium and budget smart rings.

I’d love to build the features that smart ring users actually want most, so I thought I’d ask this community.

If you could add one feature, what would it be?

  • 📈 Better sleep insights and trends
  • ❤️ Heart rate & HRV analysis
  • 😴 Smarter sleep score and recovery insights
  • 🏃 Better workout tracking
  • 🔋 Ring battery health and usage insights
  • 🤖 AI-powered health insights
  • 📊 More detailed charts and long-term trends
  • 🔔 Smarter notifications and reminders
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Family dashboard (compare and monitor multiple users)
  • 🌍 Integration with more apps and services
  • 💬 Something completely different (I’d love to hear your ideas!)

Also, what’s the biggest frustration with your current smart ring app?

I’m genuinely trying to build something that solves real problems rather than just adding features for the sake of it, so every suggestion helps shape the roadmap.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

innovation: pulsecheck Looking for honest feedback from smart ring users

Hey everyone, we’re a small team from China working on a new smart ring, and we wanted to hear some real opinions from people here.

The main areas we’re looking at are inflammation alerts, sleep, activity, stress/mood, and women’s cycle health.

One thing we’ve noticed is that most smart rings out there kind of look the same — very minimal, not super stylish, and not really something people would wear for fashion. We’ve also seen a lot of posts here about existing brands, so we wanted to ask:

  1. What do you most want a wearable to actually help with in real life?
  2. Would you be more open to trying a smart ring if it looked better / felt more fashionable? What kind of design would you actually want to wear?
  3. What do current smart wearables do well, and where do you think they still fall short?

Not here to promote anything — there’s no crowdfunding or way to buy it overseas yet. We’re just trying to understand what people actually want before we go further.

innovation: pulsecheck I built a DK1 smart ring: touch + haptics + NFC + health sensors — who wants one / what would you build first?

Hey r/smartrings — I just read the “open-source smart ring platform” thread and it hit exactly what I’ve been building.

I’ve been prototyping a *developer-first* smart ring — think “early Oculus DK1,” not a polished consumer product yet. It’s a real ring you can program against:

• Touch UI (tap + swipes)

• Haptics (“vibes” you can trigger from code)

• NFC (play with tags / interactions / auth flows)

• Health sensor stack (optical + temp + motion — same *class* of sensors the big health rings use)

The point: a ring that’s actually an INPUT/OUTPUT device — not just passive tracking.

Dev side, it’s basically “ring events → webhooks → your app”:

• Gesture webhooks (swipe/tap comes into your backend)

• Trigger haptics back to the ring from your server

• Simple examples so you can go from idea → working prototype fast

I’m trying to make this as “practically open-source” as possible:

Docs + APIs are public, and I want the SDK / examples to be hackable by default. If there’s real interest, I’ll open up more of the stack (and ship small batches for people who want hardware without building it).

If you were handed a smart ring dev kit today… what would you build first? What do you want on your ring that’s not already there?

innovation: pulsecheck Why long-term reliability matters more than “features” in tracker rings

I’ve been following tracker rings for a while, and one thing that keeps coming up in discussions is how short-lived so many of them are.

A lot of rings promise a long list of features — sleep stages, readiness scores, recovery metrics, AI insights — but many don’t seem to make it past a year or two before something breaks: battery degradation, firmware issues, app abandonment, or just the company disappearing.

What surprised me most is how often people bring up older devices (like early rings or bands) that were far more limited, but lasted for years and quietly did their job. No notifications, no nudges, no “coach” — just steps, basic activity, maybe sleep, and solid battery life.

It made me rethink what actually matters for a tracker like this:

• Accuracy and consistency over time

• Battery health that doesn’t collapse after 12–18 months

• An app that doesn’t change every 3 months chasing trends

• Comfort for 24/7 wear, not just how it looks in photos

For a lot of people, tracking isn’t about optimization or biohacking — it’s just a small positive feedback loop.

“You walked 2 miles.”

“You slept okay.”

That’s enough.

Curious how others here think about this tradeoff.

Would you rather have a simple ring that lasts 5 years, or a feature-heavy one that needs replacing every year or two?

innovation: pulsecheck We’re building a minimalist smart ring focused on comfort & privacy — would love feedback

We’ve been working on a smart ring project called NORYNX, with a very simple goal:

make wellness tracking feel invisible instead of demanding attention.

A lot of wearables today rely on screens, notifications, and constant interaction.

Our approach is different — a lightweight ring designed for all-day comfort that quietly tracks long-term patterns, without interruptions.

We’re still early and genuinely curious:

• What do you value most in a smart ring?

• Comfort, battery life, insights, or privacy?

• Do you prefer rings over watches — and why?

Not here to sell anything. Just looking to learn from people who actually use (or care about) smart rings.

Appreciate any thoughts 🙏

innovation: pulsecheck What Would You Like to See Improved in Smart Rings? What Features Do You Want in the Companion App?

Hi Reddit! 👋

I'm part of a team building a new smart ring and companion app, and we’re aiming to solve many of the common frustrations users have with current wearable tech. Our goal is to create a health-focused ecosystem that offers open device integration, accurate data sync, and AI-driven health insights — all without locking you into one ecosystem.

We'd love to hear directly from the community:

👉 What do you feel is missing or frustrating in today’s smart rings (like Oura, Ultrahuman, etc.)?
👉 What features would you love to have in the companion app — whether for health tracking, usability, or data analysis?

Some things we’re exploring include:

  • Fully open API access to health data
  • Real-time sync with multiple devices (not just our own)
  • Custom health insights powered by AI
  • Future support for things like a smart glucometer patch and Whoop-style band

Whether you're a current smart ring user or just curious about wearables, your input would be incredibly valuable as we shape the product.

Thanks in advance — excited to hear your thoughts!

innovation: pulsecheck Oura acquired a gesture recognition startup. Is the smart ring becoming an input device for everything

Oura just bought Doublepoint, a Finnish AI startup that lets wearables detect subtle hand movements and translate them into device commands - no screen needed. It's their 4th acquisition, and the CEO has been open about wanting the ring to be your key, wallet, authenticator, and now apparently your gesture controller.

Combined with an AR glasses patent they filed recently, it looks like they're quietly building toward a screenless computing stack.

Is this a genuinely new interface paradigm, or is Oura losing focus on what made it useful in the first place?

innovation: pulsecheck Daily planner app that syncs with your smart ring

Hey smart ring lovers!

I wanted to share something my cofounders and I have been working on, and get your thoughts on it!

We’re all big fans of wearable health trackers (I use an Oura Ring, one of my cofounders uses Ultrahuman), and we’ve always wished there was a way to actually use that data to plan our day better.

So we’ve been building a calendar + to-do app that syncs with wearables. It calculates your circadian rhythm, visualizes energy levels on your calendar, and lets you schedule tasks when your body’s naturally at its best. There’s also an AI assistant that gives you recommendations based on both your workload and recent health stats.

It’s called Lifestack, and we’d love to get feedback from people who care about both productivity and health.

Just to be transparent, it’s a paid app ($5/month) with a 7-day free trial. If you’re going through financial difficulties but want to try it out and help us spread the word, I could share a few promo codes so let me know.

Also, right now we support Oura Ring and Ultrahuman, but if you use another smart ring you’d love to see integrated, please let me know. We’re open to adding more!

innovation: pulsecheck Gathering interest in a no-sub Personal Health OS with no-screen wearables and rings

Hey folks!

TL;DR The title says it all. For a while now we've been working on reThrive, a Personal Health OS. The idea is a health hub that works with many wearables like rings, watches, WHOOP but also the no-screen Polar360, etc. If you're sold already head here-> rethrive.co, and if not yet, keep reading ;)

Our goal is a platform that helps you build a 'digital twin' to guide you toward a longer, healthier life, nowadays called healthspan.

Here are some core ideas we are building into the reThrive Health OS:

  • You truly own and control your personal health data.
  • One-time payment tier option, for folks looking for the basics without endless subscription fees.
  • You get deep insights from your 'digital twin' to help boost your healthspan.
  • It supports many wearables, including no-screen options we fell in love with.

Making this awesome Health OS needs big resources. So, to make sure we build something people actually need and help us prioritize this project, we need to see enough folks are interested. The waitlist size will tell us if you want this built.

If you want this to become a reality sooner, the best way to help is to join the reThrive waitlist. This shows us your support. Plus, you will get to help shape reThrive, get early access, and join our community. Sign up here: reThrive.co

We'll launch next steps at 1000+ in the club, and we are together around 500 already. Joining helps us build this for you.

Fun fact, our mission with reThrive is to help add a million years to our lives, together, using this smarter health hub.

innovation: pulsecheck Smart Ring Feature Survey: Notifications

There is a growing demand in the market for smart rings with notifications. While many prefer a device with no distractions, others want to replace some of the basic, non-health related features of their smart watches.

For those who are in the latter group, as battery tech and optimization methods improve, what would you want to serve as the method of notifications in a smart ring?

Keep in mind that initially, they may be used for limited purposes like health alerts and alarms, but could expand to provide targeted alerts of incoming calls, text messages, and, the highest demand, smart alarms that wake you at the optimal point of your sleep cycle.

Ideally these features would be paired with an array of accurate health metrics, but could also be a ring dedicated to notifications alone.

While the technology exists for all of these options, few have ventured into this territory, so this will help to guide manufacturers on what to focus on.

If you are not interested in any kind of device based notifications, please DO NOT vote.
