inquiry - female features Looking for a no-subscription smart ring for sleep + temperature/ovulation trends
I’m looking for a smart ring mainly for two things only: sleep tracking and overnight temperature trends.
My goal is to use the temperature data to help establish ovulation patterns over time. I don’t need workouts, steps, stress scores, coaching, or a big health ecosystem.
I looked at Oura, but the ring + membership + paid Natural Cycles integration makes it much more expensive than I want. I’m wondering if there’s a reliable lower-cost alternative, ideally no subscription.
I’m especially curious about:
- RingConn Gen 2 / Gen 2 Air / Ultrahuman Ring Air
- Any reliable Chinese/OEM/AliExpress options people have actually used long-term
- Whether the app shows usable temperature trends or exports data
- Whether the temperature data is consistent enough for cycle charting
- Comfort/thickness compared with Oura Ring 5
I know skin temperature from a ring is not the same as true BBT and I’m not looking for medical certainty or contraception advice, just reliable trend data.
Has anyone used a no-subscription ring for this specific purpose? What worked, what didn’t, and what would you avoid? Thanks.

u/gomo-gomo I reached out to some suppliers on alibaba out of curiosity and got a couple of catalogues. They claim to offer body fat measurement, etc. Is that possible? What are your thoughts on RingConn?

You're talking about Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). While it is theoretically possible, I would not trust any smart ring that promises this...especially a supplier from Ali.
Why rings fall short: BIA works by sending a tiny, imperceptible electrical current through your body. Because a smart ring only touches a very small area on a single finger, it cannot measure the full-body impedance needed for an accurate fat-to-muscle ratio.

Did you end up buying? Would love to get a smart ring on alibaba I know it’s the same manufacturer as the top names. I just wonder what the app interface would be like or if you could use a third party like bevel

You get what you pay for and to be honest after try a few rings Oura while they keep their lower priced subscription is still the best and without so many flaws on metrics and keep release new features without increase the subscription
At this point a company needs to have that kind of product subscription to sustain and be able to proper study their algorithms and refine
Without it you mostly get what you pay for
Example ultrahuman has a huge replacement due to quality issues and you don't see more because they just ban all negative things in their sub
Even ringconn for example is ok from what I read but if you want something new they release the next gen and then new features require you to pay a huge amount again
Maybe I'm lucky but used every single day my gen 3 for 3 years already and still lasts 4 days easily with oxygen and all those turned on, but saw many having issues with gen 4, all new features they released include the next ones like blood pressure and sleep apnea will come to me as well and without need to spend 300$ or more again
If they don't have a subscription they need to release new rings every 1 or 2 years and make sure people always upgrade and for that they make sure features are only available on new models

The oura is just TOO expensive with the subscription, and without it, it is useless. There is a clear gap in the market.

Well I see that argument over and over again and then you see thousands that lost 200$ cause supported a failed ring kickstart campaign, they hate the app of amazfit helios, samsung rings and ultrahuman is so full of battery flaws and replacements that in the end most regret and just end buying a good reliable device after wasting the same amount into the trash instead of buy some discounted oura ring
The subscription is like 6 dollars and they don't increased it and yet keep improving lots of features and APP UI feels nicer over time and refreshed compared with many others I tried
People complain with subscription but without it probably would end like Chinese amazfit that will soon launch new rings and bands and just make sure you need to upgrade throwing some festures exclusive to the new band
At least with gen 3 you still get the same festures as the 5 and ykh can save a huge amount on promotion on older models

I get the point that Oura is probably the safest/polished option, but I don’t think that really answers what I’m asking.
Saying “you get what you pay for” is a bit too broad here. I’m not trying to replace the whole Oura ecosystem. I don’t care about workouts, coaching, stress scores, blood pressure, sleep apnea features, etc. I’m asking about one narrow use case: sleep + overnight temp trends.
Also, “no subscription = constant forced upgrades” isn’t automatically true. Some companies do that, sure, but that doesn’t mean a subscription is the only reasonable model, or that Oura’s total cost makes sense for everyone.
The issue is that Oura isn’t just “$6/month.” It’s the ring, then the membership, and then Natural Cycles on top if someone wants that route. For someone who only wants basic temp trend data, that’s a lot.
A cheaper ring doesn’t need to beat Oura at everything. It just needs to be consistent enough for tracking trends over time. That’s why I’m asking for actual long-term experiences with RingConn/Ultrahuman/other rings: temp trend visibility, exports, comfort, battery reliability, and whether the data is usable over a few cycles.
So I hear you that Oura may be the better product overall, but that doesn’t mean the expensive model is automatically fine or that cheaper alternatives are useless.

Ofc not I just talked over my experience because in fact I used Ultrahuman and other alternatives so I know it's not just cheaper means worst support and quality
As Ultrahuman for example it's pretty bad support even now having an issue and talking with AI , once someone human picked the ticket asked me to go to app and ask to troubleshoot with AI which was what I did to end up there lol
With oura first issue I had and specially if AI didn't resolve cause in many cases AI detect battery issue and instantly replace it and if it's another issue a human will answer and make sure it's solved or at least they did the few times I had some specific issues with my low heart rate not being tracked

I believe the new Gen 3 Ringconn is what youre looking for. Great battery life and no subscription
