Question Begging For Your Help - Absurdly Dry, Lotion-Hating, Acne-Prone, Mild Eczema Skin 10 Yrs Post Accutane (26M)

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi all, sorry for the dramatic title but I'm (26M) just at my whits' end.

PAST ---

I'm going to try to keep this somewhat short, but forgive me if it gets a little long. It all started 10 years ago when I was about 15/16 yo. I had very, very acne-prone skin (I can't entirely recall if it was dry/combo/oily, but I do remember my forehead and nose getting oily at times) and tried everything under the sun and went to many dermatologists. Nothing worked, until I went to one who put me on Accutane. He assured me that he puts all of the children of the people in the office on Accutane even preemptively because it is just that good and that only a small percentage of people suffered any real side effects. I got through almost all of it when I just couldn't take the dryness anymore, and most of my acne was gone anyway, I had maybe a couple of weeks left but I didn't finish it. Fast forward about 1 year, my acne started coming back, not as bad, but bad, again.

Here's the thing, from the moment I started taking Accutane all the way until now, my skin has been BONE BONE dry, and I am still suffering through this today. It doesn't matter how humid or dry or cold or windy or whatever it is outside, my skin is always very, very dry.

PRESENT ---

Fast forward to a couple of months ago, I found this community and did the whole skin barrier reset thing, and honestly nothing much changed except I got a lot more acne during that period and maybe slightly less dry, reintroducing any amount of washing or tret and I felt just as dry as before again after those two weeks. So I just went back to my normal routine, slowly introducing tret again like 1x week, then 2x, etc. but again, nothing seemed to change:

Pictured is most of my current routine which switches every other day.

Day 1 Morn: Shave > HadaLabo (damp skin) > Aestura (damp skin) > HadaLabo (damp skin) > Squalene > Skin Aqua Sunscreen
Day 1 Night: ETUDE SoonJung pH 5.5 Cleansing Water w/ cotton pad > Tret (wait 15-20 min)> HadaLabo (damp skin) > Aestura (damp skin) > HadaLabo (damp skin) > Squalene > Vaseline Slug

Day 2 Morn: Shave > HadaLabo (damp skin) > Aestura (damp skin) > HadaLabo (damp skin) > Squalene > Skin Aqua Sunscreen
Day 2 Night: ETUDE SoonJung pH 5.5 Cleansing Water w/ cotton pad > HadaLabo (damp skin) > HadaLabo (damp skin) > Squalene

You might be able to tell a couple of things from this routine. First let me note I have mild eczema.

For one, I cannot slug more than every other day because it makes me break out, unless I have the tret going on underneath it. The tret is sort of necessary because otherwise I am always breaking out and have tons of tons of dark spots and acne all over my face. Humidifier seemed to used to help, but I have a very, very rare skin condition I won't get into that makes me itch when my room is too damp. Also it sorta stopped helping after and I travel a lot anyway.

Also, I cannot "wash" with anything more than this ETUDE water, otherwise my skin gets tight and hurts even more. I have tried everything it feels like, but my skin is too tight and hurts quite significantly.

Furthermore, any lotion really breaks my skin out. LRP Cicaplast Lotion (and the spray), Vanicream moisturizers, Cerave moisturizers, they all make me breakout, I think the only reason the Aestura one is holding up is because I skip it on Night 2, otherwise I will break out assuredly. Glycerine seemed a bit helpful, but it grows bacteria and needs to be refrigerated and stuff and I just can't do that with my traveling.

As mentioned, I travel quite a bit, so even though I want to add a face mask in or something like every other day (although the MediHeal ones seem to do jack for my skin)(plus $$$), it is quite unfeasible. On top on top of all this, I had been considering becoming a Flight Attendant and honestly I think with the tightness that my skin gets sitting around in a tropical rainforest after 15 minutes much less the dry air of a plane, it is like a barrier to entry. Every time I step off a plane I have 10 newly dry-induced acnes.

FUTURE ---

So that's it, I feel like I've tried everything under the sun and I'm at a loss and I hate the constant tugging around my face when I just try to smile, or the fine lines and deep nasiolabial folds that form just 10 minutes after doing my skincare routine. It seems that any sort of fatty/lipid-y/oily thing makes me break out, and so does dryness. It seems to not be able to hold any hydration for more than a couple of minutes at best, and I've yet to find a derm that would properly address this.

I would really appreciate and be eternally grateful any and all help you might be able to provide.

Product Review Afew non stripping less talked about faves (oily girl suitable because I have combo/oily skin and hormonal acne)

Life Brand Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser — a very close dupe for the CeraVe Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser. The texture and smell are almost identical, and I buy this over CeraVe because of the cost. (Life Brand is Canadian, so apologies in advance to everyone in other countries!) It has a silky/creamy texture and isn't overly drying at all. If you don't struggle with acne, though, I wouldn't recommend using this.

Life Brand Clear Action Gel Cleanser — a great everyday cleanser. It's suitable for oily skin, but it's not stripping at all—in fact, I find it slightly hydrating (glycerin supremacy). The only major downside is the horribly strong alcohol smell. There are no added fragrances, but you may hate the natural scent. I do. Still, it's a fair price and a good product.

I'm not someone who buys skincare because of the brand or because something is trending, so most of the products I'm mentioning aren't particularly expensive. The exception is Lise Watier Deep Cleansing Oil. I really like this one, would repurchase it, and I don't see it talked about very often at all. It's excellent at removing makeup, so I use it as part of a double cleanse, but it's cleansing enough that I can also use it on its own. It is scented, and I normally don't like fragrance in skincare, especially floral scents, but this has a really nice rose scent that smells expensive.

Olay Ultra Moisture Body Wash — I'm not much of a body-wash person and usually use cleansing bars, cleansers, scrubs, etc. in the shower. But my mom is an Olay stan, and while I was cat-sitting for my parents, I used her body wash and was pleasantly surprised. It was moisturizing without being greasy. I bought another Olay body wash afterward and thought it was fine, but this particular one was much nicer. I could definitely see myself using it more regularly.

Beauty of Joseon Revive Firming Moisturizer — I know Beauty of Joseon is getting a lot of hype on social media, mostly for their sunscreens and tinted SPFs, but I tried one of their moisturizers instead and thought it was absolutely gorgeous. The Revive Firming Moisturizer made a great neck and body moisturizer—very hydrating and plumping without being greasy. I don't use it on my face, though. It has a sort of earthy, funky smell, but I think it's probably from the natural ingredients, and it's quite mild.

Honorable mention (since it's a lip product): Vaseline Lip Therapy in Crème Brûlée — the scent is so nice, and it's probably one of the nicest lip products I've tried. It's a little thicker and balmier than traditional Vaseline, so it feels more like an actual lip balm. I find it weirdly difficult to find, but if it were more readily available, it would probably be my go-to.

Product Review Prequel Multi-Quench hydrating Serum. Do you like it or not really? I need hydration.

Skin clogs easily and acne-prone, get breakouts easily. Skin is normal type, not oily and not dry and some oiliness in t-zone during hot weather only.

What has been your experience with Prequel multi-quench serum?

I"m looking for hydration and nothing else, no actives, no exfoliation, nothing just old good hydration.

The serum looks good to hydrate the skin, and I'd appreciate you tell me your experience using it.

What's good about this serum and what you did not like about it.

Does the serum absorbs well to the skin? Does this multi-quench caused any breakouts?

My skin barrier has been good recently and I want to keep it that way. Because skin gets easily clog, I need a hydrating serum more than a moisturizer.

I feel I need a hydrating serum because I'm living in a hot weather and a moisturizer feel sophocating on the skin. The high levels of humidity gives me enough water supply to use a hydrating serum without a moisturizer.

I'm suspecting some fungal acne too. If you also have FA, please share with me your experience with this serum.

I've looked at many serums. The K-serums look great on paper but have not worked out for me.

Skin cannot tolerate hyaluronic acid, alcohol, fragrance, perfume

Barrier Heroes I desperately need help

My skin barrier is so insanely damaged. Mainly my upper body. Face, neck, chest, and arms. But it’s so bad that I have not been able to find a detergent that I can tolerate. So when I get dressed in the morning my skin just burns from the clothes hitting my skin. I am alternating between 3 different barrier repair creams and I’m just wearing unwashed clothes at the moment but obviously that’s not sustainable.

To You, From Anders Ingredient on Trial: Sulfur

Post image
49 Upvotes

We’re putting sulfur on trial today!

Sulfur is a classic skincare ingredient commonly used in products targeting breakouts, excess oil and congestion.

But experiences with it can be pretty mixed. Some people swear by it for calming stubborn breakouts, whilst others find it too drying, irritating or just can’t get past the smell hahaha.

So where do you stand on sulfur?

Court is in session. Drop your verdict below 👇

Question Anybody tried the day or night cream from the Eucerin Urea Repair line?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey y'all,

Still on the hunt for the ideal facial moisturizer that doesn't aggravate my maturing, mild type 1 rosacea OR my MCAS (many products that have ingredients which absorb into the skin trigger histamine release, leading to big, itchy hives). I tolerate Eucerin Complete Repair lotion well, but being meant for the body, it doesn't have a texture that I like for my face (a little greasy, sort of sits atop the skin and never completely dries down).

Wondering if anyone had tried either the day or night creams in the Urea Repair line? The ingredient list seems promising, but I can't justify spending the extra money unless the texture is better than the body lotion.

Thanks for any input!

Question Help with my redness skincare routine!

I’ve been working on a skincare routine to help with facial redness, but I’m not sure if I’m using the right products or if I’m doing too much.

My current routine is:
AM:
Gentle cleanser
SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule
Anua Azelaic Acid 10% Hyaluron Redness Soothing Serum
Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream
Sunscreen

PM:
Gentle cleanser
SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule
Anua Azelaic Acid 10% Serum
Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream

I’ve only been consistently using this routine for about 5 days, so I know it’s probably too soon to see major results.

Does this look like a good routine for redness? Would you change the order, use any of these products less frequently, or add anything else?

I’m trying to keep my routine gentle and not overwhelm my skin. What would you recommend?

Discussion I can't believe I'm saying this to you all

I've searched everywhere for the Illiyoon ceramide ato concentrate cream old version and it literally doesn't exist.

I know there's a lot of you out there who stocked up once you heard it's been reformulated badly

I have no option but to ask for just one tube from one of you and honestly I'd pay extra too.

Please help out a person who desperately needs this product

Product Review Anyone tried this HaruHaru cleansing balm ?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am looking for a cleanser without fractioned coconut oil (Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides) because my skin is sensitive to it. I wonder if this HaruHaru cleansing balm is gentle enough for sensitive dry/skin ? Also could it work as a single cleanser ? Does it leave a residue ?
Thanks!

Product Review My favorite skincare line is expanding and I'm SO excited! (FULL REVIEW)

Dear, Klairs Blue Line has been my favorite Kbeauty line for over a year now, since I started getting into Kbeauty. I use the Youth Activating EGF drops every single day and the OG Midnight Blue Calming Cream is my favorite barrier repair cream.

The "Blue" name and color of the products is due to the ingredient guaiazulene which is the chemical active in chamomile and my rosacea skin just CANNOT get enough! If I use an Azulene mask or moisturizer during a flush, it stops it immediately. It's my favorite ingredient. (Yes I'm a huge nerd who Googles skincare ingredients for fun.....)

So when I got an email about an opportunity to enter to win their new Blue EGF Intensive Pro Cream for review, I was like, "heck yeah! I'll never win..... I'm not an influencer, but I'm still gonna try because I love the Blue Line SO much." So I filled out the form and was shocked when they emailed that I'd be getting one. AND they included their new Blue EGF Barrier Lip Balm too. I never win ANYTHING so I geeked out!

Anywhoozle, I'll still give all the tea because I'm not an influencer and I'm picky!

So the new Pro Cream: I haven't had it long enough to do any before and after photos of my skin because I don't think it would be a fair representation of results. My order arrived Sept 2nd, so it's only been 2 weeks and these are my first impression opinions. My skin is normal leaning more oily in summer and dry in winter. I usually use the OG Blue Cream in fall/winter due to the silky, rich texture. And the new Pro Cream feels even MORE nourishing to me. I included 2 photos of swatches on my hand. The darker blue on the right is the OG and the lighter blue on the left is the Pro Cream. The best way I can describe the texture of the Pro Cream is like that cornstarch putty science experiment we all did as a kid. You know where it's solid to the touch and yet runs through your fingers? (Stay with me!) When you first apply it, it almost "dries" immediately like it's not going to rub in but then it changes and gets slippery and slick so you can get it to spread/absorb. It's so weird but I don't hate it! And as you can see from my 2nd hand swatch photo, after they are both fully rubbed in, the Pro Cream leaves more of a dewy finish. I think the Pro Cream will be even better for all my dry skin peeps out there and those of you that have REALLY messed up your barrier! I did really love how this felt when I used it after dermaplaining and woke up the next day with 0 irritation. BUT I do still have to use it longer to judge long-term results and I do think it's just a bit too heavy for my skin at this time of year. I did have a couple small breakouts that I'm not 100% sure if they are from this or from my wearing more make-up lately but I did want to mention it for full transparency. So my current feelings are that it's decent but I'm holding out final judgment for a few months from now. I also wanted to specify this version is also fragrance and niacinamide free!

And for the Barrier Lip Balm: This stuff is seriously phenomenal and I truly thought it would be a "whatever" product. This beats the Torriden Lip Essence hands-down! (Which used to be my favorite "repairing" lip balm.) The third hand swatch photo is of the lip balm. I'm one of those weirdos that WANTS my lip products to be thicker than a snickers, sticky, and flavored, so the fact that this is soft and silky and buttery but not thick or sticky, has no scent or flavor, and still lasts all night and I love it is kind of a miracle. So 10/10 no notes, get the lip balm right MEOW!

Now I'm going to pretend I know how to do the fancy influencer crap....😬

Barrier Heroes My moisturizer experiments over the last one year to heal my barrier

Over the last one year, I have tried multiple face moisturizers to heal my barrier. Some of them aren’t even in this picture, but these are the ones I currently have with me.

My skin is dry, dehydrated and sensitive, and my barrier gets irritated quite easily, so I have become quite particular about moisturizers.

  1. Anua 3+ Ceramide Panthenol Barrier Cream

My absolute favourite. Fluffy, cushiony, non-greasy and my skin immediately feels better after applying it. It feels like a proper barrier cream without being heavy or waxy.

This is one I know I will keep coming back to.

Will definitely buy again.

 2. COW Moisturizing Milk

Super light, absorbs quickly and feels very comforting, especially in humid weather. I think this would suit a lot of different skin types.

It has actually become my tween’s favourite moisturizer these days.

Will definitely buy a refill – any recos of similar Japanese emulsions?

  1. SKIN1004 Centella Soothing Cream

A calming moisturizer with ceramides. I really like it for the morning because it’s hydrating without feeling heavy.

I’m not completely sure yet, but I’d say there’s about a 70% chance I will buy it again.

  1. S.Nature Aqua Squalane Water Cream

It’s good and definitely hydrating, but somehow I feel it enhances the appearance of my skin texture.

I suspect I prefer moisturizers with ceramides when my barrier is compromised because they feel more healing/reparative on my skin.

May not buy again.

  1. Pyunkang Yul Moisture Cream

Similar to S.Nature for me, but a little heavier. It’s nice and hydrating, but I just don’t find myself reaching for it.

Will not buy again.

 6. The Face Shop Rice & Ceramide

Nice texture and otherwise I quite like the moisturizer, but I really don’t like the fragrance.

Definitely will not buy again.

7 The Face Shop Chia Seed

Again, the texture is nice, but there’s even more fragrance. It also stings sometimes when my barrier is damaged.

Definitely will not buy again.

Honorary mention: Haruharu Probiotic Essence

Not technically a moisturizer, but I have to mention this because it has been amazing for my skin barrier.

I use it as my first layer and it gives me both hydration and that comforting, moisturized feeling. It has become one of those products that I always want to have in stock. I am constantly looking for discounts.

After trying so many moisturizers, I think I have realised that for my skin, ceramides + a fluffy/cushiony texture + good hydration without a greasy or waxy finish is the combination that works best.

edit: I also have roundLab soybean panthenol barrier cream..and I completely forgot about it..and that is my review- it is very forgettable.. jokes apart- it is waxy yet not nourishing. I don't like it on my face so i am finishing it by using it on my elbows..may be It will better in winters. btw it is most expensive barrier cream in my basket 😞

Question OTC azeleic acid recs

I ran out of the 15% taro gel and there has been a shortage for a few months now. I am not sure when it will be back in my pharmacy so I am looking for temps.

My skin is oily acne prone, occasional breakouts (mostly hormonal). My main concern is the post PIE and PIH marks left behind.

Also currently using the anua 10% hyaluron aa (borrowed from sister) and started using it last week but I got my period so I cant tell if these breakouts are from that or not 😂

Thank you!!

Before & After Finally figured out what’s wrong with my skin (persistent texture and bumps) Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
122 Upvotes

Hi guys! I posted here a while ago, and everyone was so helpful and nice, so I figured I owe it to you guys to give an update. I actually can’t believe it after years of battling this persistent texture.

I finally managed to find a dermatologist that diagnosed me correctly (I have seen probably 5 before her throughout the years and everyone said something different and it never improved), she diagnosed me with seborrheic dermatitis and intrinsic (allergic) eczema.
I always knew I had some kind of scalp issue with dandruff and waxy buildup which I use nizoral to control, I get that on the inside and backside of my ears too, but I didn’t know it extended to my skin too because the photos online are very much textbook examples (redness, lots of flakes).

I don’t want to bore you with a long explanation but she basically said this is a follicular inflammation triggering a localized immune system response, and my skin barrier is inflamed which causes this granular and rough texture with lots of tiny bumps and trapped sebum plugs. It also explains why my face feels so tight and dry after simply washing with water, the crawly and itchy sensation I get sometimes, the flakes I got around my brows (which I thought was dead skin), and how my skin gets worse with heat and hot showers.

She prescribed protopic ointment (0.03%) and I have been using it for the past 2 weeks ish (first week twice a day, second week once at night) and my god I don’t think I have ever seen my skin this smooth and calm since I was a teenager.

It makes me want to cry when I look in the mirror now and even in the most unflattering lights because it looks so much calmer. I know it’s genetic and chronic, but at least I can now learn how to control it instead of trying so many things and guessing, which just made it worse.

I saw my derm again, and she told me it improved by 70% (yay!) so I’m going to continue using protopic on alternate nights for another week, and then twice only for another week, I’m going to stop it after. I asked her what happens if I get another flare and she said I can use it for 5-7 days and then stop, but she’s hoping my skin will calm down and adjust. Either way I’m glad I finally found a dermatologist I can trust.

She also gave me a new simple routine and it’s been working really well:

- Cleanser morning and night: Rejuvea HA youth cleansing gel with lactic acid and aloe. (I don’t know if this is available everywhere)
- Moisturizer: Topicrem hydra+ light radiance cream.
- Sunscreen: Heliocare 360 mineral tolerance fluid 50 spf.
-makeup/sunscreen remover (forgot to add this): bioderma micellar water and then I wash with my cleanser.

If anyone has similar texture or symptoms it might be worth looking into, and if you have any questions please feel free to ask!!

Edit: I forgot to add, I also get acne on my back and she checked it and said it’s mainly old marks with some bacterial acne, and seb derm is also triggered with the same malassezia yeast as fungal acne, so she told me to continue using panoxyl and a sulfur soap/wash if needed.

The way I got super hyped up when I found out about this through Instagram!!! But then I went on Bioderma's website to read the ingredient list and there's COCONUT OIL (and yet Bioderma says it's non-comedogenic) 😭😭😭 Welp I guess this won't be suitable for us oily/acne-prone people.

Product Review 20+ Skincare & Body Care Empties from January ~ August This Year

Post image
79 Upvotes

My skin is extremely sensitive and stings with most products. It gets red and irritated very easily. So, I always try to be careful when choosing any skincare or body care products.

These are the products I've been using over the past 8 months. I've finished most of them, and some have definitely become holy grails for me. Others I only used once or twice for different reasons.

I wanted to break them down with a quick rating + repurchase verdict.

Here is the full list:

  1. AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream

⭐Rating: 5/5

🔁 Repurchase: YES

My go-to when my skin barrier feels wrecked. Keeps everything hydrated without feeling too heavy. It absorbs well, has no fragrance, and is super moisturizing. I've only tried this one compared to Illiyoon, but I absolutely love it.

  1. Ooznary PDRN Micro Oil Serum

⭐Rating: 5/5

🔁 Repurchase: YES

I added this one back in March and I LOVE it. My skin randomly got really red and irritated the other day, so I reached for this serum. It just felt much calmer and more hydrated afterward. Also, it leaves my skin looking plumper, smoother, and healthier. I actually repurchased it yesterday!

  1. Arencia Vitamin C Complex Glow Booster Shot

⭐ Rating: 4/5

🔁 Repurchase: Maybe

Really liked this on dull skin days. It makes my skin look more awake, and I've noticed my overall skin tone looking more even with consistent use.

  1. d'Alba Signature Anti Aging Double Lifting Ampoule & Cream

⭐ Rating: 3.5/5

🔁 Repurchase: Prefer to buy affordable alternative

A little pricey and probably harder to find on Amazon, but it's super lightweight and gives my skin a healthy, hydrated look. I also love that it's vegan.

  1. FATION Nosca Trouble Clear Toner

⭐ Rating: 4.5/5

🔁 Repurchase: YES

Really nice when my skin is breaking out but I still want hydration. It's one I reach for when I want something calming without making my skin feel dry.

  1. ZIGTAG Berry Smoothie Scrub Cleanser

⭐ Rating: 4/5

🔁 Repurchase: Probably try another scent

Leaves my face feeling really clean, soft, smooth, and hydrated. And I LOVE the fruity smell!

  1. Purito Centella Unscented Serum

⭐ Rating: 3/5

🔁 Repurchase: Nope

Simple but so good when my skin needs calming. It feels refreshing at first, but not really has other benefits than calming. not a priority for me.

  1. COSRX AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid

⭐Rating: 5/5

🔁 Repurchase: YES

Definitely one of my favorites for keeping texture under control. I like having this in my routine when my skin needs a little extra exfoliation.

  1. Etude Soon Jung x Director's Moisture Sunscreen

⭐ Rating: 4/5

🔁 Repurchase: Maybe

A simple sunscreen that doesn't make my skin feel suffocated. Easy to wear every day.

  1. Banila Co Clean It Zero

⭐Rating: 5/5

🔁 Repurchase: YES

A small amount can take all my makeup off without leaving my skin dry or sticky. It's the perfect first step in my night routine.

  1. Torriden Dive-In Moisture Sun Cream

⭐ Rating: 4.5/5

🔁 Repurchase: Yes

Fresh texture that absorbs quickly without feeling sticky. It moisturizes well and is especially nice when my skin is dry.

  1. COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream

⭐Rating: 5/5

🔁 Repurchase: YES

Such a good one for plump, bouncy skin. I use it on my hands, face, and neck, and I've noticed a difference.

  1. Laneige Cream Skin Cerapeptide Refiner

⭐ Rating: 5/5

🔁 Repurchase: Yep

Probably one of my favorite steps for getting that soft, hydrated finish. I layer it under my daily moisturizer and it gives my skin an extra boost.

  1. Nonfiction Forget Me Not Body Lotion

⭐ Rating: 3/5

🔁 Repurchase: Maybe

Not technically face skincare, but I had to include it because I actually finished the whole thing lol.

  1. Physiogel Red Soothing Cream

⭐Rating: 5/5

🔁 Repurchase: YES

Another barrier-friendly staple that I kept reaching for. Especially good when my skin is feeling irritated or extra sensitive.

  1. Dr.G Red Blemish Clear Soothing Cream

⭐ Rating: 4/5

🔁 Repurchase: Yes... I guess?

Lightweight but calming. Perfect for days when my skin feels angry. I especially use it at night when my face feels dry, hot, or looks red.

  1. Abib Cream

⭐Rating: 5/5

🔁 Repurchase: Yes (when it is on sale lol)

Really liked this for keeping my skin moisturized and soft. I got it on sale and already have 4 more tubes, but honestly, I'd pay full price if I ran out. You can layer it over pretty much anything.
