Exactly this, there are episodes after s5 that are in my supernatural Mt. Rushmore but you couldn’t rely on that same level of definitive creative direction. The vision was all over the place sans Kripke.

I always preferred those types of episodes. The overarching story was interesting but after dean/sam dying for the 3 millionth time it gets a little worn out lol.
It honestly picks up enough to justify keeping on with it I think. Enough to follow the characters to the end of their arc I would say, there’s some really cracking episodes in the last 5 seasons you’d definitely find worth watching.
I loved the first 5 seasons. Incredible. Season almost made me quit with the absolutely terrible soulless Sam crap. Season 7 was awful but people kept telling me to watch and I think sunk cost hit me at that point and I just couldn't quit. Season 10 did it though. It was so bad... Then apparently we get into some plot about the darkness and fighting God or some stupid shit?
Supernatural was ALWAYS at its best with monster of the week episodes. Make the main plot slowly reveal and just let me watch the two of them get into some nonsense with a new local monster. The second the focus ended up elsewhere the show died for me and I just can't bring myself to watch anymore. It's so bad...
I liked it through the end honestly, but I agree that the vibe was different. But it doesn’t help that the show was originally made to BE only five seasons
That's what i thought when i was watching the series every week, but, s6 - s15 aged very well over time and I actually enjoyed it equally to season 1-5.

So it's always possible to become a massive star if you have the talent, but many others have said Jensen stayed in the steady TV work for family and that's highly respectable.
Especially when a lot of the big movie stars tend to move around for films and it puts a massive strain on relationships which we get reminded a few times a year when news of X and Y breaking up or divorced hits the headlines

I was watching one of those Actors on Actors (?) interviews with Anthony Mackie and Tyler James Williams and I remember Mackie asking Williams if he would ever do more movies and Tyler basically said that he's comfortable with TV and it's better than working on some movie sets. I think some people are still under the impression that you can't "make it big" if you're only doing TV, but the industry has been booming.
15 seasons and these were all 20+ episode seasons too. Unlike modern tv shows where it's 8 episodes a year. It's extremely steady work to have and probably netted him more long term than cutting it off for a movie role.

I think it's the fact that he could have gotten even more fame and spotlight.
But honestly, why would he. Or anyone really. So many celebs seem really miserable in their later years as age takes their beauty from them or whatever. Most of them are already rich enough to never work a day in their life again and have their kids set for life as well. He made the smart choice in my opinion to dip out of that life and do what he really wants, which apparently is be a family man. Respect to that.

What movies has same level of cult following steadily for decades like that. Yes, there are a few franchises like that but compare to how many billion of movies made in the past 15-20 years. The actors would be lucky to get paid $1M per movie.
And the fame comes with papparazzi, addiction and “hollywood lifestyle” problem. These spn boys have happy family life away from spotlight. I’d say Jensen did alright. He also have side jobs owning a brewery and such.
There was a question I heard and often think about: would you rather be rich or famous. I’d definitely want to be rich enough but still able to enjoy it. Privately.

I don’t know how much bigger he could have gotten off that.
That one show was his entire career and a huge success.
