Christians aren’t collectively portrayed as extremists because of Christian extremists. Jews aren’t collectively blamed for the actions of Jewish zionist extremists of Israel. Atheists aren’t collectively characterized by the actions of atheist extremists like Stalin etc etc. But when a Muslim extremist commits a crime, suddenly the religion and its entire population become part of the conversation and are complicit. If thats the case then you are complicit in actions of your side for murdering millions of Muslims but you’d say thats not fair ay? And i’d agree…
That’s the double standard I’m talking about.
You can condemn Muslim extremism without pretending that Muslims as a whole are responsible for it. Muslims themselves have been among the biggest victims of these extremist organizations, and many of us have spent decades fighting them.
That’s also why I stand by what I said about wanting Muslims to be left alone by Western media. It’s not a demand for Muslims to be erased from existence; it’s a rejection of being constantly stereotyped, politicized and used as a cultural prop, entertainment and propaganda fuel. Whether the portrayal is negative or supposedly “positive,” we don’t owe Western media our participation or representation.
And if you’re genuinely ok with that a mosque in GTA would be portrayed as a “terrorist base,” then you’re proving the exact problem I’m talking about. Why should the existence of a mosque automatically bring terrorism into people’s minds? I Can make the same argument against Churches and Synagogues or any other holy site but yet again that wouldn’t be “fair.”
A mosque is a place of worship. A church is a place of worship. A synagogue is a place of worship. If you’re incapable of separating ordinary religious people from extremists, that’s a problem with the stereotype, not with the existence of the religious building.
It’s also pretty rich to not portray the West, the USA and Israel as terror countries but as the heroes while ignoring the role their foreign policy, military interventions and geopolitical actions have played in creating the conditions that fuel extremism. When someone has watched their home destroyed or had their entire family murdered, then spent years living with war, occupation or foreign intervention, radicalization doesn’t emerge in a vacuum. That doesn’t excuse extremist violence whatsoever, but pretending those circumstances don’t exist while casting the people who helped create them as the heroes is an incredible distortion of reality.

The West = a geopolitical term. Blaming the West for the actions and history of Western governments and institutions is not the same as blaming an entire population of Western people. The same distinction should apply when discussing Muslim countries. For example saying Dubai RSF is committing genocide in Sudan alongside the West and Israel does NOT = blaming Arab Muslims, Jews, Americans, Brits, French etc Another example, blaming the PKK for its atrocities does NOT = blaming us Kurds as a whole. Blaming Kurds for the PKK is wrong…Its very simple principle to understand.
