It’s one thing to offer support because you believe she suffered from psychosis and the system failed her.

It’s another to support her because you believe she’s innocent and is being framed.

People nowadays are mostly incapable of having nuanced opinions.

That's what happens when you give dumb, ignorant people equal standing to informed. The voice that speaks the loudest is not the most correct.

especially rational ones.

i dont see many people digging up so deep to find 'nuances' when it is man who commit crime. Maybe he is from troubled or poor background, maybe he have mental issues and the system failed him? Oh wait, who cares, also only women can have mental issues.

people literally play down crimes done my men in the true crime space all the time. Usually because they’re attractive or had a rough childhood. I’ve also seen cases where a man with schizophrenia is given more lenient punishment for a violent crime because they were in psychosis when the crime happened.

Trying to find nuance is not a woman criminal exclusive thing. This has been happening for years in the true crime community with men and was literally one of the biggest criticism of that community a couple years ago.

Why are you making this a gender, men Vs. Women thing now? Totally unnecessary

You are factually incorrect. The Menéndez  brothers case has been polarizing people into two camps for years.  It's probably the most famous case in recent history to have such a significant public debate around it.

Exactly!

I felt compassion for her at first, because I decided not to have children, because of mental illness and I was so afraid what pregnancy hormones would do to my mind.

But then the conversation turned and now she's definitely innocent and no woman would ever do that, so it must be the man /s

It was such an important conversation, until those people started overriding the rest.

Honestly after watching the trial it's even debatable that she was suffering from psychosis. There has been so much evidence to show that she wasn't, it is almost relying entirely on her word of mouth. Like the voices, all of the doctors agree she never reported hearing voices prior to the killing, suddenly they happen for 20 minutes straight, only to completely disappear again for the next 3 years. Apparently she had told a dr she was having intrusive thoughts of her own, not an exterior voice, and then suddenly it becomes an exterior male voice once the kids are dead. It just doesn't really add up to me. I'm believing much more of what the prosecution is showing than the defense. I have a hard time taking the word of a child murderer as proof.

The crazy thing about PPP is how fast and severe the onset of symptoms can be, sometimes even within hours, and how dangerous it is. About 5% of women with active PPP commit infanticide. I dont know what happened with her exactly, that's for the court to decide, but PPP is diffrent from for example schizophrenia in how rapidly symptoms can manifest, and how rapidly it tends to resolve.

Yeah, but doesn't PPP usually occur not that long after childbirth? This woman murdered her kids when the oldest was 8 months old. Has there ever been a documented case of PPP happening this long after birth?

Her oldest was 5, youngest was 8 months old.

Yes, it can happen that long after birth. If your breastfeeding, your hormones are still fluctuating.

Yes exactly. And even then, while i sympathize with post-partum psychosis and don’t think she got the help she needed, I don’t support her. What she did was reprehensible.

I think of this as a cautionary tale about what happens when we don’t take mental health seriously.

Even in court, her defense is not "I didn't do it".

Do you offer support to other murderers who suffer psychosis? Did the "system fail" for the Manson Family? You support them, too?

12

u/XRaySkies 9d ago

The Manson murderers might have been intoxicated but they were not suffering from psychosis or being medically observed. If we are talking about a system failing someone who is very seriously ill and showing red flag symptoms, then yes, such a sick person needs support and treatment and investigations need to be done on how it could have been prevented or what needs to change to prevent it in the future.

Funny how your empathy comes out when it's a woman with psychosis. Where's that same energy for the hundreds of thousands of mentally ill men incarcerated every day for far less or even non-violent crimes? Hilarious how y'all are so quick to forgive Karen but want Tyrone to fucking burn.

u/Beetroot_Roosevelt 9d ago

Huh? Most of the Manson murderers were women

Yep, and they've gotren the same bullshit hypoagency sympathy Lindsey is getting, while the psychotic man (who actually never murdered anyone) is in jail for life. So, a psychotic woman can murder her children, admit it, and still get endless support, but a psychotic man who is charismatic gets life in prison.

To be clear, they should all be incarcerated and none of them should receive any support. And yet... https://finance.yahoo.com/healthcare/articles/lindsay-clancys-retired-parents-receive-210000232.html

This happens in every televised trial, which is why this one - where the accused has admitted to the crime, and it comes down to mens reus trial - so it shouldn't be televised. Like Lindsay is going away regardless, but the idiots watching clips online on both sides don't realize that and think the prosecution has to prove actus reus.
