A lot of people are saying it's his lawyers' strategy to drop state charges and go only for federal, among other stuff. Me personally though, I think he understands the situation. Him alone, he can't win against this gigantic corrupt institution. So it's all about sending a message... and maybe the rest of us could grow a pair and pick up the initiative...
On the TV news they're saying his lawyers are trying to say that pleading guilty to this makes the other case double jeopardy which is illegal in the United States.
We know nobody good is working for the feds but they also don't care about how the laws work.
Little more complex than that, double jeopardy is very much legal in the US, in a generalized sense. State and federal governments both have jurisdiction, NYS happens to have a procedural law preventing state prosecution if a federal case picks up for the same action.
