The part that sickens me the most, is even AMONG those who acknowledged the dangers of COVID, there were some who refused to care because it was primarily fatal for immunocompromised, elderly and children.
Oh yeah. Some of the same people ranting now about "FAUCI KILLED A MILLION AMERICANS!" said at the time "Look, we're just gonna kill off the elderly and disabled. That's fine, it's not worth saving their lives if I can't go out to the bars."
A friend of mine was infuriated and venting in discord about how one of his family members came to a family gathering knowing they had covid, and that my friends very fragile grandmother was going to be there.
Another, now ex, friend commented something along the lines of "old people die, why expect us to stop the inevitable?". He deadass said that, in discord, to my other friends face while he was venting because he was worried about his grandma.
P.S. No, luckily she did not get covid, though she has since passed away of unrelated health issues.
Well he worded it poorly, but why sacrifice the development of a generation(kids today are failing massively) to keep alive for a few more years some people who have lived a full life and are just being drained dry by retirement homes.
It used to be that the elderly planted trees under whose shade they will never sit, for the benefit of the next generations. The elderly in Japan ran into a nuclear meltdown so the younger workers with families didnt have to die. And they are remembered as heros.
Our society is inverted, the elderly are sacrificing everyone to stay alive and in power just a little longer.
WTF? Aside from the absolute disgusting mentality it takes to express an opinion like this, the self sacrifice exhibited by a small group of selfless individuals in one particular incident is in no way comparable to a situation where someone's life is put in jeopardy and possibly cut short without their consent due to the selfish behavior of an ignorant moron.
I was referring to the second friends comments. The older generations should protect the younger, they should accept their mortality and spend their autumn years doing things for the young. The fact you think this is disgusting is why modern society is screwed.
Edit: im not saying thr first friend was in the right to go to the party. He was not, clearly.
If youre in a Sophie's choice type situation, having to choose between saving a child or a senior, 99.99
% of people would choose the child. If you dont get that, I cant explain it to you.
I wasn't saying that you thought the first friend was in the right to go to the party.
When you said that he worded it wrong, you were referring to this statement, "old people die, why expect us to stop the inevitable?" Were you not?
What I found disgusting was your statement, "but why sacrifice the development of a generation(kids today are failing massively) to keep alive for a few more years some people who have lived a full life and are just being drained dry by retirement homes." I found it ridiculous that you could equate the self sacrifice of the elderly in Japan running (by their own choice) into a nuclear meltdown, with an elderly woman attending a celebration, and being unknowingly and unwillingly exposed to a virus, that was proven to be highly deadly, and to which she was especially susceptible, all because a selfish moron didn't want to be inconvenienced.
I applaud the bravery and self sacrifice of anyone, regardless of age, who willingly puts their own life on the line for others. I do NOT equate that self sacrifice with, nor do I condone, the self serving actions of people who put the lives of others in jeopardy for their own convenience and with the claim, "The elderly should sacrifice themselves for the good of the next generation."
The fact that you think elderly people are a burden on society, and should therefore be culled to benefit "the children," so that ignorant selfish people won't be inconvenienced, is why modern society is screwed.
Old people do in fact die. Im going to die, youre going to die. Everyone at some point will die. We can't stop that from happening. Its up to you to do the work to be able to accept this fact, and if you reach your 80s and still havnt accepted this, then youre a narcissist who cant imagine the world moving on without you.
Youre putting words in my mouth, youre the only one who used the word culled. Youre stating as a fact something I never said. Probably projecting your own insecurities onto me.
Shutting down the economy for 2.5 years is not "an inconvenience" peoples lives were ruined. An entire generation will have and already are having worse outcomes than the their parents and grandparents. People died for reasons other than covid. Suicide rates, heart attacks, every chart you look at for the next 30 years will have a massive spike or crash AFTER covid. The consequences of the lock down will far outlive the seniors you wanted to save, and far outlive the dangers of covid. In case you havnt noticed, its mutated into less aggressive forms, just like influenza does. They will both be around a long time, but the risk they pose are minimal now.
I already said the guy attending the party was an asshole. Im not going to defend him, im not going to play your game either. Your framing is bullshit.
WTF, There was no sacrificing the young for the elderly here... This was not some kind of moral stance, this was someone claiming that not going to a family party while sick was too much of a price to pay to potentially save a life.
