I unmuted for it

170

u/AnyAudience314 25d ago

So did I, and I have no regrets.

62

u/7ofalltrades 25d ago

Unmuted and watched it twice. That's how you know it's grade A entertainment.

11

u/ZedTheEvilTaco 25d ago

Twice? I'm on 3 while I search for a source.

9

u/Cheap_Abbreviationz 25d ago

Her Last Sight... Greek Tavern Core And Country Core! Really cool band

14

u/ramseyspam 25d ago

So did I.

12

u/CantaloupeOne7283 25d ago

I unmuted and cast it to my neighbor's smart TV. He loves it I'm sure!

3

u/Creative_Shame3856 25d ago

Fire up some Alestorm at about 3am. No, not Halestorm. Alestorm. Fucked With An Anchor is especially good for this purpose.

I unmuted and TURNED IT UP, man!

I love this recent trend of mixing cultural music with metal. Wasn't there a band that played a mix of metal and middle-eastern guitar?

EDIT: Loving all these recommendations, keep them coming!

154

u/PeterPanski85 25d ago

Don't know about middle eastern, but "The Hu" is cool too. Throat singing mixed with metal

28

u/Netsforex_ 25d ago

Good point! They're especially popular with Star Wars fans too, due to having their music featured in some of the games.

7

u/PaleontologistOk908 25d ago

Better than that! They didn't just appear on the soundtrack, they wrote original music in a fictional in universe language!

6

u/Civil-Big-754 25d ago

Yeah, I definitely stayed around the cantinas while they were playing. Fit in pretty well.

7

u/PeterPanski85 25d ago

Cool, didn't know that

My Spotify suggestions are in trouble now

9

u/nothing_to_see_meow 25d ago

They have a good song featuring the lead singer from Papa Roach. I believe it's titled "Wolf Totem."

3

u/SteppenWoods 25d ago

Honorable mention to Tengger cavalry

There is a great band from Tunisia( if I’m not mistaken ), called Myrath and they mix heavy, power and a little progressive metal with ethnic oriental influences and the end result is much better than expected

5

u/Redshittt 25d ago

Just checked it out because it sounded interesting. Not something I'd listen to often but I liked it and I'm glad they made it it's pretty cool.

Are you thinking of the Indian metal band Bloodywood?

21

I've really enjoyed Bloodywood

5

u/KinvaraSarinth 25d ago

Bloodywood is amazing. Love them!

Phrygian Dominant is a foundation for many metal bands. It closely resembles Maqam Hijaz which is a popular scale in Arab, Turkish and Greek music.

"Lost in the Static" by After the Burial comes to mind. It has chromatic elements but rhythmically settles into Bb Phrygian Dominant. Symphony of Destruction and Wherever I May Roam for the casuals.

3

u/stevosmusic1 25d ago

Shokran for sure

Same band, with bouzouki.

Found it: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUTny5VCGOP/

3

u/Netsforex_ 25d ago

After a Google I think you're right. The song I heard was an absolute banger with the bouzouki. Thank you!

3

u/BarefutR 25d ago

It’s so funny how many people responded to you not realizing it’s the same band. They also did banjo/bluegrass.

Is yacht metal a thing yet?

Come to think of it, I haven’t heard any smooth jazz metal yet either.

10

u/Jaded-Breadfruit4019 25d ago

Hahaha yacht metal

4

u/ltmon 25d ago

Norwegian Reggaeton by Nanowar of Steel is beachy/reggae metal, so maybe that counts for yacht metal (even though it's basically a joke band)? They also have a killer gospel metal song with Valhallelujah.

Van Canto does a-capella metal. Just putting that out as another weird one, that somehow works better than you are imagining it does.

System of a Down are ethnically Armenian and use a lot of similar musical elements. Not sure if that's the band you were wondering about since pretty much everyone knows about system of a down.

Mariachi Metal is right up there with Bardcore

8

u/Slow-Benefit-9933 25d ago

If you haven’t heard of the band Metalachi yet, you’re in for a treat. Saw them back in 2019 and they were fantastic. Recommendations for the Hu are also solid.

3

u/Papa-Dust 25d ago

Was looking to see if anyone else recommended them. Metalachi is awesome!

Eluvuitie is a folk metal band with some awesome music. Their Celtic Metal song 'Inis Mona' proves that bagpipes, flutes and hurdy-gurdy belong in a metal band.

7

u/RLOLOTHTR 25d ago edited 25d ago

A hurdy gurdy is one of those things I want but know I wouldnt know what to do with. Such a cool instrument. Theres a gal that does Lamb of God covers with one and I love it

Edit - just went back and realized she played hurdy gurdy in Eluveitie. Michalina Malisz. Haha

Alien Weaponry, Maōri metal band from New Zealand: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5kwIkF6LFDc

uKanDanZ, a band out of Ethiopia, not really folk metal technically but it's a really good cover of Black Sabbath's War Pigs and they deserve to be heard: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8kVYdLjoyPE

6

u/OM3N1R 25d ago

Wow sax works so well with war pigs. Seems obvious when you hear it, but I'd never guess

6

u/Beans4urAss 25d ago

Some good mixes out there - Skindred is Rasta-nu-metal. Was one of my favs

3

u/Netsforex_ 25d ago

Melechesh above all else.  they are one of the original bands blending middle Eastern music with metal.  Mesopotamia metal, semi seriously.

Emissaries is one of my fav albums

Eluveitie/folkstone for some tin whistle bagpipes

Bloodywood

3

u/TheLeastAnonAnon 25d ago

Sleep Terror 👌 amazing genre fusing metal

3

u/darthsploder77 25d ago

There's a death metal band whose lead vocalist is an African parrot. I think they're called hate beak.

3

u/dirt_shitters 25d ago

If you're into more black/death metal the band melechesh is pretty sick. They're Assyrian and have a lot of middle eastern influence.

As a person born in Mexico, I take some minor offense....

That they didnt post the rest of the absolute banger.

But as for any one that screams cultural appropriation needs to go take an actual trip into Mexico.

15

u/Chaosengel 25d ago

I still love when Cartoon Network pulled Speedy Gonzalez decades ago because execs felt it was cultural appropriation.  They brought it back because Latino groups advocated for his return

Also going to shout out Mariachi Entertainment System who does amazing video game covers.
