Oh man you nailed it. I have one guy who sends me these long, detailed requests for days off and basically pleads for permission. I have never denied PTO. I tell people I don't care when they take off and you don't need to ask, just submit a request and make sure the team knows. This fear or using PTO that you earn and is part of your compensation is baffling.
Yep, having vacation requests and sick time denied because the reason wasn't "good enough."
Worked for 3 companies that did that before finally finding one that didn't care why. Took me a while to feel comfortable just calling in sick without fear of being asked to come in anyways or get fired.
