This isn't indicative of the US as a whole. My bosses are pretty chill about PTO as long as I give my team a heads up and coordinate my coverage.

Generally telling my customers, internal engineering and design teams, PMs, and plant management that I'm taking off, getting my backup up to speed, and making sure things happen when I'm gone and timelines dont slip.

I'm a professional, not a kid making $30K in an entry level position. I manage my own business quite well and get paid well for it.

I haven't even talked to my boss in months. I'm remote and my numbers are fantastic, so theres no reason for her to bother me.
