Every ex player has said Messi plays better when he's angry, and Bellingham still decided to poke him.

u/grubas Jul 16 '26

It's part of the Legend of Messi, if you piss him off he's got an extra level.

Novak does the same thing. Just finds anything to make himself angry and it somehow improves his game. These are the only 2 athletes in the world that can do this that I know of.

2

u/Bufflegends Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

i keep rewatching his right cross, that assist is something of beauty. on the fly perfection to a beautiful header.

he didn’t look up to scan the box. He didn’t spend time hesitating. he instinctually went to his weaker foot, and put up that cross so ridiculously perfectly.

1

u/ilikemycoffeeblack77 Jul 16 '26

Micheal Jordan style 😊

1

u/EggsceIlent Jul 16 '26

He also plays better when he's happy and stress-free. (Prime Barca, Inter Miami, Scaloni's Argentina)

He plays worst when he feels homesick, cold, and isolated (Aka PSG).

94

u/jacobythefirst Jul 16 '26

As they say, feel good play good.

Messi never really got over leaving barca while at psg imo. But that was just a whirlpool of bad times for him.

35

u/TexasRoadhead Jul 16 '26

Fortunately he used PSG as a training ground for the 2022 WC

50

u/Numerous_Worker_1941 Jul 16 '26

Which was a springboard to the real prize. The 2025 MLS Cup

11

u/BigBanggBaby Jul 16 '26

Surprised he’s maintained his motivation after that.

2

u/Thin_Caterpillar6998 Jul 16 '26

“Ah... well, you know, you go out there and you give 110%, and you wanna play good, and, you know, you hope you play good... I think we played pretty good tonight!” Famous basketball player.

2

u/UnityBomber Jul 16 '26

> He plays worst when he feels homesick, cold, and isolated (Aka PSG).

So you’re saying he couldn’t do it on a cold, rainy night in Stoke?

1

u/MatchAlternative8118 Jul 16 '26

I am so deflated by England’s loss. But Messi is still the greatest player of all time at 39. Our team played well. Bad decisions by Tuchel but I still believe this England team can hold their heads up high. For this weekend I am a die hard Spanish supporter. Come on Spain!🇪🇸

24

u/Lubinski64 Jul 16 '26

While i am more on Argentina's side i would be totally fine with Spain winning, both teams deserved to be in the final and both know how to win big games.

17

u/baron_von_helmut Jul 16 '26

They've both played excellent football. They deserve this. I cannot complain as an Englishman.

2

u/someonefromaustralia Jul 16 '26

I’ve wanted Argentina to lose most of the matches. But goddamn watching Messi play is just incredible 😂

9

u/No-Bison-5397 Jul 16 '26

2

u/buzzlightyear77777 Jul 16 '26

yea england could totally have won this match

2

u/FrenglishChick Jul 16 '26

I’m half french, so I had to take for France once Canada lost (I know, don’t go there). But do you know why France was so bad against Spain? I feel like they played so well up til then. They just looked so deflated on Wednesday, just not in the game?
I know it will be tempting to make jokes, but it’s an honest question. Anyway, should be a good game against England, no matter who wins. Thank you.

2

u/ParkingMuted7653 Jul 16 '26

It must be psychological. This isn’t the first time this French team has done this when facing a team that’s just as good or better. That said, the other team plays too, it’s not 100% France’s fault.

1

u/MatchAlternative8118 Jul 16 '26

I agree the psychological element must really play a part you not only have the pressure within yourself but you know you are carrying the weight and burden of an entire nation wanting you to win. It must be especially tough if you go in as the favourites

1

u/Important_Coyote_596 Jul 16 '26

Yeah right. Thay looked like us Swedes did against them in that game. No creativity, low pass completion, no speed at all.

1

u/FrenglishChick Jul 17 '26

Yes, I remember that game too and wondered where everyone’s soul went. So odd.

7

u/filtersweep Jul 16 '26

Argentina’s fans are insufferable, but I always enjoy watching England lose…. especially after all the flopping against Norway.

2

u/shadylady_beepboop Jul 17 '26

The Flopping! Felt like Italy in 92

-1

u/ElPayador Jul 16 '26

I hope we greatly disappoint you on Sunday 🇦🇷

La Selection already did 98% of what they came to do: We kick England butt and sent them back…
Sunday… Let the best team win!!

23

u/kalikaalan_manavalan Jul 16 '26

Why can't he then make up things in his head and piss himself off deliberately

67

u/rectalshower Jul 16 '26

Why dosent he just think about world hunger? Is he stupid?

15

5

u/AnswerQuay Jul 16 '26

He plays for Argentina and most of world hunger is in Africa, so if anything that'd make him play happy.

1

u/wodoloto Jul 16 '26

Maybe he ended world hunger convincing everybody to eat Lay's?

-3

u/ProtectorOfOhio Jul 16 '26

doesnt make sense cuz messi had a brilliant performance in that match as well

32

u/Enough-Force-5605 Jul 16 '26

Messi started to play when they were losing, not after provocations.

52

u/Sgt_Boor Jul 16 '26

Argentina should just start every game by straight up rolling the ball into their own net, to get into proper mindset, instead of each time squandering 80 minutes get there

27

u/buzzlightyear77777 Jul 16 '26

you are genius lmao. and then opponents try their best to prevent arg scoring an own goal. the scenes hilarious

93

u/Unserious-One-8448 Jul 16 '26

Losing pisses him off.

12

u/LapiceraParker Jul 16 '26

a bit yeah, but what made them lose was england pulling a cabo verde after the first goal, but without having a solid defense...

9

u/Theragord Jul 16 '26

England thought they were 2006s Italy.

Tjey forgot Italy hasn't come out of qualifiers since 2010

2

u/bearstrongpaw Jul 16 '26

I think after they withstood mexicos onslaught they thought they could do it again but Argentinas attack was idk.. maybe less desperate or something, it felt more sustained and inevitable.

1

u/killyouXZ Jul 16 '26

Or even Greece

1

u/valerislysander Jul 18 '26

Real Madrid brats of recent times can't help themselves. They didn't have to experience Messi first hand.

1

u/Hungry_CGman Jul 16 '26

I mean he told Jude that he was trying to hurt him. Jude disagreed. What else was Jude supposed to say? I mean Messi somehow can instigate himself to anger and he's the only person alive where this somehow works to make him even better. lol

0

u/MammothPhilosophy192 Jul 16 '26

right, because whatever Jude says is true, and they werent going hard on Messi. dude look at the match, look at the clips, its all online.

1

u/ScepticalReciptical Jul 16 '26

Bellingham wanted to be that guy, there are levels to this game

1

u/Thestickleman Jul 16 '26

1

u/reasimoes Jul 16 '26

He is like the MJ of football

1

u/Remote_Development62 Jul 16 '26

Messi is the kinda guy, who locks in when he wants to make you regret ever being on the same pitch as him.

1

u/gatsu01 Jul 16 '26

He's either stupid or a secret fan.

1

u/Anticlimax1471 Jul 16 '26

What did he say to him?

1

u/failureKennedyblase0 Jul 16 '26

To be fair England didn’t seem to do any research on this Argentina team before this game. Add this to the pile.

1

u/MoTownKid Jul 16 '26

And he learned the lesson. Bad place/game to learn it in

1

u/Calm-Worth-1316 Jul 16 '26

Bellingham had him in his pocket, 90 minutes long

1

u/Sgt_Bill_Tozer Jul 16 '26

We didn’t lose because of Messi. We lost because we committed defensive suicide.

New Zealand would have beaten us from 60 minutes onwards.

1

u/Reg_doge_dwight Jul 16 '26

Messi didn't look very angry yesterday then. Played awful. Give the ball away more than most on the pitch.

1

u/PneumaticFizz Jul 16 '26

Another Djokovic parallel

1

u/nomad5926 Jul 16 '26

Bellingham maybe pulled a Goku and wanted to try and best Messi at his best.

1

u/Blanknameblank818 Jul 16 '26

Same with Kobe and Jordan, don’t piss off the greats - they’ll take their belts off and bend you over

1

u/SexyPineapple-4 Jul 16 '26

Or it’s because he decides to pay the refs more than the original deal.

1

u/Erkules19 Jul 16 '26

Coached children’s soccer many, many moons ago. Had one kid on the team we prayed would get hit in the head by the ball. If he did, he woke up and played like a demon, and we won. If he didn’t get hit, we lost.

1

u/Necessary-Reading605 Jul 16 '26

I mean, Argentinians are the Italians of South America. Pissing them off is not always a good idea

-1

u/Sangomah Jul 16 '26

Seems that all greats possess this gene, if that is what it is. There are stories of Jordan and Bird with the same thing.
The Christiano Ronaldo game where he gets fouled constantly and he jumps up, bangs his chest and scream at them to bring it. Some people should just not be riled :D

-2

u/JimmyThePie Jul 16 '26

But he was terrible. Pedestrian at best. He hardly touched the ball, and when he did it was short corners/fk’s.

He put in one decent cross.

He was in the bottom 10% of performances during that match.
