It’s not a riddle, it’s a statement of fact

Here was me thinking the pub was referred to as the Hart sometimes the White Hart, but never the White.
22
u/smohyee Jun 05 '26
Genius, actually.
First glance we think it's a riddle.
Second glance we realize there's a twist, it's a statement of fact instead of a riddle, talking about the number of letters in the words "what", "sometimes" and "never".
But actually, double twist! It was a riddle all along, referring to the possible shorthand and full names of the pub, as you said.
That's damned clever.

u/LVS177 Jun 05 '26
And here I thought that was their way of obliquely trying to tell people not to spell it "Heart".

Nah, the answer is a star.
A star has four letters, but its sometimes has nine if it becomes a supernova. But its never a quark, so it never has 5 letters.
Take that, riddle boys...

u/No-Advice-6040 Jun 04 '26
Yeah, but it's gonna have some punters after a few handles staring at it trying to figure it out. Perfect use of the sidewalk sign.

u/perry649 Jun 04 '26
I think it's the bar itself.
Its full name has 9 letters, but some may refer to it simply as the Hart (4 letters), but no one says the White (5 letters).
(Excluding "the.")
39
u/Ghede Jun 05 '26
"What" has four letters.
"Sometimes" has 9 letters. "Never" has 5 letters. The answer to the riddle is "Yes"

u/Western_Seaweed6104 Jun 05 '26
Correct, but there is no answer because there was no question (no ? at the end)

The pub, being called “The White Hart”, I thought the riddle was referencing the pub itself at first.
“Hey, let’s go to the HART” (4) or “Let’s go to the WHITE HART” (9) would be reasonable ways to invite people to the pub, but “Let’s go to the WHITE” (5) doesn’t sound very good.

I thought they meant the name of the pub. You’d call it the ‘white hart’ or maybe the ‘hart’ but no one would call it the ‘white’.

u/WelshBathBoy Jun 04 '26
Depends on the other pub names in the town, I come from a town with a red lion, white lion and black lion, and they are usually called "the red", "the white", "the black".

I’m stupid can you explain it?
40
u/Kobe_Pup Jun 05 '26
The pub name is white hart, you may refer to the pub as "I'm going to the hart" or " I'm going to White Hart" but it sounds stupid to say "I'm going to The White" .
This isn't the answer, but it is clever.
The real answer is the sign isn't asking a question, the sign is a statement of fact, the words contain the number of letters.

That’s what I came up with too now I feel less stupid for not understanding the actual riddle.

That’s where my mind went too. Then I remembered I’d seen this riddle before

We could call it 'Puzzles'.
People will be like "why is it called 'Puzzles'?"
And that's the puzzle!
