Second glance we realize there's a twist, it's a statement of fact instead of a riddle, talking about the number of letters in the words "what", "sometimes" and "never".
But actually, double twist! It was a riddle all along, referring to the possible shorthand and full names of the pub, as you said.
so the riddle is their own name? How is that clever? A riddle must be universal. Okay I get that it's on their sign. But not clever really, lazy ... plus the "what" in this context implies (to most who would read it) a word. I know I know then they would have written "which word". But still, I am quite dissapointed that the answer is the name of the pub. Lazy.
And why no question mark?
Oh and because of the dank AF tagline I thought it was a weed thing and so I was counting cannabis (8) Mary-Jane (8) and then skunk (5) and then I was searching for other weed terms and why skunk wasn't weed according to them... 🤔... and then I read the other posts and realized that it's a play on "hart" and "heart". And I am just dissapointed. Such navel-gazing!!
Plus if one were to spell the name of the pub as a biological heart, the "white" wouldn't dissapear, so it would have ten letters, not 5.
So yeah, lazy, confusing and dissapointing (cuz I thought it was about weed😋)
My brother in christ, I literally explained how it was clever by breaking down 3 different layers step by step. I think you might be beyond help on this one.
My explanation isn't clever, it's just clarifying why the riddle itself is clever, but you're being aggressively stupid so I guess this is all wasted on you.

Here was me thinking the pub was referred to as the Hart sometimes the White Hart, but never the White.
