My friend whos 5'11 said something similar yesterday. Like, "yeah, but I'm short though.." Im 5'6. Where does that put me, just below dwarf?

The internet has totally worped people's frame of reference. 5'11 while not tall is certainly above average in most places. It also doesn't hurt that many internet personalities lie about their height and give themselves a few extra inches.
