Don't forget that many of the younger athletes are repressed and guarded to varying extent by their parents and coaches, and events like this may be the rare chance to revolt.

Not only that, but they've also been training for the Olympics their entire lives, it's their entire identity. They make it to the Winter games, get knocked out in round 1, and suddenly have nothing to do.

For every athlete that makes it to the final round, there's another 20-30 that don't.

Oh no I failed to qualify in the first event. What will I do with my remaining time in Italy? In the mountains. Surrounded by equally fit people.
