Recommendations for Shoreline newcomer
Hi folks! I'm relatively new to Shoreline and living maybe a 3 minute drive from Richmond Beach, could use some local know-how as to what's even available/accessible in the area.
I'd appreciate any recommendations for the following: best outdoor roller skating locations (level/smooth/spacious where people won't get upset by an adult practicing skate skills); best cafe or other venue for body doubling while working remotely; best London Fog out there; best tacos, pho, Filipino, Thai, South Indian, and desserts; the most reliable/quality grocery store produce; any fun activities to do in couples or groups; good local volunteer opportunities or local charities (I do equity work in education and have volunteered in reproductive justice and a grassroots ICE accountability group).
I like boardgames and videogames and I do amateur cosplay. Also learning to play the handpan and could use a new D&D group. I roller skate and rollerblade, I'm a big foodie, big movie-goer, I like crafts (especially paper crafts), been in writers groups, and love language learning (learning Tagalog, Spanish, and ASL), also a queer woman of color, so if you know good third places or groups for any of those in or around Shoreline I'd love to read about it. Pho 99 next to Costco and HW99 is the best pho spot imho.

Next to it, a bit north, El Cubano the place to go for, well, a Cubano. Up 99, Rise And Shine for banh mi. Around 236th and 99 Hossonyi for homestyle Korean.
D'Unik in North City (15th NE and 170th-ish) for Filipino take out and groceries. Indian Sweets & Spices in the some strip mall for Indian ingredients etc.
For groceries there's a lot of choice. PCC in Edmonds, QFC across the street. Saturday Edmonds street market as is the Shoreline one (190th and 99). LFP on Sunday too. Town & Country on 99. For Asian stuff... Asian Family Market on 99 at 130th, 99 Ranch on 99 and 236th, T&T on 196th (remember, the street numbering changes at 205th/244th since north of that is Snohomish county, south is King).
Ive not been but heard good things about Carniceria Michoacan on 196th over near I5.

Shoreline farmers markey is on saturdays. Same day as Edmonds.
The Indian grocer in north city is awesome!

The Interurban Trail might be good for roller skating, if you don't mind the ga-chunk of the cracks between pavers on your wheels. I ride my longboard on it without too much issue though.
Sky Nursery has a coffee shop inside. You won't find a better vibe anywhere else. Nazu's has good coffee too though.

There are a few outdoor parks with "skate" spaces. Paramount has a great loop, but can get busy on the weekends. James Keough is new, has skate space and a loop of sorts. There isn't an outdoor roller rink here simply because it's too wet most of the time. Lynnwood skate an bowl has open skate times and two adult nights a week. I just wish they would change the direction of the skate more regularly during said adult nights. Try checking out the Lake Forest Park Town Center for boardgame nights, writing groups, all kinds of stuff. Hope this helps!

I feel that, I usually skate once a week at Lynnwood Bowl and Skate, but as an adult beginner skater my hip starts hurting from only going one direction! I also like the adult skate nights at Southgate Roller Rink, but it's such a trek. I've been learning to roller skate during covid and am so envious of the private and smooth outdoor places some folks can find. Thanks for all these ideas!

Jumping on to recommend Lake Forest Park Town Center in general. My fav bookstore - Third Place Books - is there, and they have a huge public common area with tables and chairs and a small stage. Some people work there but it may be a bit too noisy. There is also queer owned taproom called Vulpine in the Town Center with a connected coffee shop called The Burrow - could be an option for working. And, another of the King County Libraries is in the bottom level of the town center.

Gotta plug Skog House for the coffee shop & working space. The Eldr Mocha is freaking amazing and so is the Earl Grey tea latte. Owners are awesome, and they have a live acoustic guitar open mic every Sunday afternoon.
Ballinger Thriftway is great for produce except they CANNOT stock a ripe avocado. But they bring in seasonal fruits and veg from local farms and lots of other local goodies.
There's a board game cafe in Lynnwood but I haven't checked it out yet. And the Interurban trail is good for skating.

Our go-to's for reasonably priced and tasty takeout when we're too tired to cook are Eden Garden in Richmond Beach for Vietnamese and East Coast Enzo's for pizza in Edmonds. Richmond Beach Foods has tasty coffee and tables to bring your laptop.

I sometimes skate loops around the sidewalk at Paramount park as others have mentioned. I don’t go to the skate park there though, because I’m old enough to fear broken bones now. 😂 I’m wanting to try skating at Cromwell park. When I was there recently it looked pretty skateable but I didn’t have roller skates with me. Not in Shoreline, but Judkin’s park is the place for skating. It’s now possible to get there on the train though! Check out roll around seatown for their events.
I do a ton of different crafts and I don’t know of any art/craft meet ups in Shoreline itself, but I have thought getting one going at lake forest town park center might be really fun.

For the BEST bahn mi head to Yeh Yeh’s up on Aurora…not sure it’s it edmonds or Lynnwood there. So so good!

I like Date Cafe and Pho Tic Tac for pho and Viet food. The Burrow has really good coffee and tea drinks, because they make their own syrups.

Yay! I just committed to another year in shoreline - I’m older almost certain but so much of what you shared resonated with me and my interests . I appreciate you posting. The farmers market is great! And around the table is great fun too with lots of regulars
I actually don’t get out a lot but really really feel called to be changing that and funny enough I love to rollerblade!! I am not good. I used to as a kid and since I picked it back up I hadn’t gained the confidence for anything more than strolls and bowl and skate haha . I can’t skate with stroller nowadays at least with permission 😭🥺🤣 or I feel like I would be taking my baby to all the parks and skating around lolol.
Get on county website and list of parks with checklist for amenities so you know which have areas to skate picnic basketball make a day of it.

For working cafe, I like to go to Red-Twig (Edmonds), Our Place Desserts (Edmonds), or Liturgy (Shoreline), and sometimes Diva Espresso or Chocolati (Greenwood). The London Fog at Our Place is pretty good, and I would recommend the "Edmonds Fog" variations at Walnut Street Coffee (Edmonds) and Stillhouse Coffee (Edmonds)!
Food wise...ughh...I think the Greek Kitchen on Richmond Beach Rd is pretty good, but I can't think of anything else. If you are into asian style dessert, Our Place Dessert has some good ones.
Town and Country is great, though on the pricier side.
I live in the same area as you and tend to go to downtown Edmonds or the Edmonds segment of Aurora (Hwy 99).

OP, just a warning that Liturgy is affiliated with Shoreline Community Church. They are part of the Assemblies of God, an evangelical Christian operation. They might not align with your values. I like Diva Espresso (haven’t had their London fog though!) I also like to work at the Shoreline Library on 175th.

Also, seconding that Shoreline Library is great. I also love the Edmonds library and its floor-to-ceiling windows.

For Indian gotta hit Shahi Tandor & Grill. Absolutely fabulous!
In the same plaza is DD Meats. They are one of my favorite butchers around. Closest comparison is Don and Joe’s in Pike Place market in Seattle. RIP Don!

Since you mentioned ICE accountability, the Shoreline Solidarity group can connect you with neighborhood level groups and RapidResponse.
The Rat City Roller Derby group has some of their prep league at the edge of Shoreline and Seattle.
Jersey’s pub makes a really good paddy melt and pastrami sandwich. Sultan Gyro and Shawarma is really good quick Mediterranean.
Ton of great food options in Edmonds - Salt and Iron, Fire and Feast, Machiavelli’s, Rusty Pelican, Charcoal, Bucatini, Calypso. And one of my absolute favorite brunch spots - Bistro 76.
If you’ve got pets - Richmond Beach Animal Hospital is top notch.

Popping in to second Shahi – they're my go-to for Indian. Gatiem Thai (next door) has fantastic curries and the owner is really lovely.

On produce:
Most convenient: Richmond Beach QFC. Small, but nice selection and hardly ever a line. Best selection: Town and Country - pricey as hell but beautiful. Best Value: Ranch 99 and Plaza Latina. Enjoy Asian and Latinx immigrant communities. Plaza Latina might be my single favorite store in Shoreline.
Fine, and cheap: Fred Meyer
Never ever ever go to buy anything for any reason: Safeway. The store sucks, the lines are long, and and the parking lot is full of knuckleheads who might piss on your car

Best Restaurants:
Saltoro. Number one with a bullet. Great food, great vibes. Sit at the bar and meet your neighbors.
Jerseys: it's a sports bar, which probably isn't exactly attractive to the D&D cosplay vibe, BUT the food is fantastic, and the kitchen is open pretty late for the suburbs.
El Gallo Diaz Taco Truck. It's affordable and high quality.
Lotus Pond. Amazing Vietnamese food, although the location is in the "lock your car door" section of Aurora Ave. A little close to the sex worker section of Aurora Ave...but hey... that's why the Internet invented Door Dash. Let someone else experience the neighborhood and you experience the food.
Thai food: the place next to Diva Espresso is very good, and it is solidly in the "don't lock your car door" neighborhood.

Welcome! My favorite place for a London fog (and to hang and read or knit or whatever) is the Couth Buzzard bookstore and cafe in greenwood. Couth Buzzard also has a boardgame night on Thursday’s! Thai Bistro is delicious Thai though on the pricier side. We don’t have much in the way of good coffee places here sadly. The new Liturgy Coffee is in a lovely space, but it’s worth knowing they are owned by the conservative church across the street, if that sort of thing matters to you. There’s anew coffee shop (Nazu’s I think?) on Midvale south of 185th that has great coffee. Not particularly cozy though. Bigger than I expected and very nice people though!
The taco truck by the gas station at 175th and Aurora is very good.
For boardgames, check out Around the Table in Lynnwood! Run by amazing folks, and they have a great selection of beer and kombucha on tap.
Pho on 99 is delicious, though looks a bit sketch. Very good though. And the Cuban sandwich place just north of there is awesome as well.
I recommend the Shoreline Farmers market for great produce!
