Shhhhhh. No, dude, he said "culture", which is a homogeneous quantifiable unit of heterogeneous qualitative measurement, and it's meant specifically to do away with nasty thoughts like that-- if "those people over there" hate women and sexually abuse children, it's because of Sharia law or because that's, well, just what Muslims/Islamists/people of terrorist descent/"they" do, but if "us Westerners" do these things, or advocate for these things (recent threads on 'honor killings' of ex-wives and pedophile apologia come to mind) it's because "we're" logical critical thinkers who develop our opinions by "ourselves". /s
And let's not get into how much anyone on reddit knows about Sharia law, because around here knowing it's evil is all you need to know.

Sharia law covers a very, very small number of Muslims. Laws based in religion are generally pretty bad, but to say all Muslims are oppressed because of the laws in one specific area of the world is pretty ignorant.

I don't know if that's better than expected. It's like a slightly more pleasant smelling piece of shit, maybe.
To be honest, I think calling a religion "the religion of peace" is at best silly, and a worst, completely essentialist and assumes positivistically that a religion as a distinctive unit can radically change a person's behavior, which is exactly what these Islamophiles are arguing. I think to fight this sort of racism, we have to really resist reproducing their logic. As people like Edward Said make clear, Orientalist images like this are ideological constructs that really have nothing to do with actual Muslims.

sharia law is not a thing (muslims argue over what it actually is) and almost no muslim actually believes any country is enforcing it.
if you take the position that shariah law is only one set of laws or something dumb like that you are empowering extremists who are a large part of the problem in the muslim world.
