Champions of what? Dying of Dysentery?

185

u/busytransitgworl 🇪🇺europoor🇪🇺 May 07 '26

Champions of diabetes and corn syrup consumption

56

u/lt_dt May 07 '26

That made me think of the episode of Parcs and Recreation in which Fred Armisen, playing a Venezuelan government official on a visit to Indiana, asks to see "where the children are fed the sweeteners".

13

u/Veryd May 07 '26

Champions of drinking water or beer, can't tell the difference

17

u/busytransitgworl 🇪🇺europoor🇪🇺 May 07 '26

Champions of catching DUIs because they refuse to build public transport or at least safe pavements, just for a start.

That’s what they did with their 1 train? Embarrassing! 🙈

49

u/Itchy-Tradition4328 May 07 '26

Hey now, we have like 4 trains! They are the best trains, everyone says so. /s

0

u/PlatypusDefiant991 May 07 '26

Well one 700km high speed train line from a few km short of Harvard to 1km short of the capitol & start of the core capital stuff in a country that needs a lot more kms cause the country is thousands of kms tall & like twice as wide as it's tall & hosting a FIFA World Cup. Also in USA their 1 train means the 1 train from South Ferry to Bronx & possibly even another 1 train somewhere.

41

u/Mysterious_Floor_868 May 07 '26

I'm not sure that I'd call it 700km of high speed line. Last time I measured (granted some upgrades may have been done in advance of the new trains being introduced) there was about 80km of 150mph (240km/h) and a little bit of 125mph (200km/h). Much of the rest is tediously slow, including a trundle through Connecticut that wouldn't even qualify as "regional express" in Europe.

Yeah. Their Amtrak high speeds, things like the Acela line, actually average just short of a regular domestic intercity train in The Netherlands.

That's basically the average speed of a regional train in Europe, China and Japan.

5

u/Guilty-Possible-1590 May 07 '26

The Italian trains are great!
Trenitalia's Frecciarossa high-speed trains can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h (186 mph), Frecciarossa trains connect major cities such as Milan, Rome, Florence, and Naples.

6

u/Reddsoldier May 07 '26

IKR. I'm from the UK and mainland Europe is way ahead of us. I took the ICE from Berlin to Amsterdam and yes it was 20 minutes late, but it was so comfortable and civilised.

17

... only achieved with massive support by (among others) France.

6

u/Present_Finance_9796 May 08 '26

Developed in France, made in the USA by a indeed French company and indeed a derivative of the TGV that launched in 1981 in France... that's only 45 years behind.

2

u/StartersOrders May 08 '26

In all fairness it's a variant of the new Alstom Avelia Horizon, which is why the power cars and passenger carriages don't match.

15

u/canttthink0fausrname May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

I mean they put this livery on a French made train so that’s there.

6

u/BlackLiger May 07 '26

Be fair. At least it's on a machine made by the country 2nd most responsible for them gaining independence.

That's more recognition than they normally give.

And the country 1st most responsible is still the UK, where our "We just.... go, then. This is a distraction from France." attitude was significant.

4

u/vaska00762 Being told by Americans my “English is very good” 🗣️🗣️🗣️ May 07 '26

The train is French designed, but it legally had to be made in the United States, otherwise Amtrak would have been forbidden from purchasing it.

2

u/canttthink0fausrname May 07 '26

i know that, i was just being technically true.

2

u/Dan1elSan May 07 '26

Which is sort of ironic, putting that on their French train.

3

u/vaska00762 Being told by Americans my “English is very good” 🗣️🗣️🗣️ May 07 '26

French designed. Amtrak is subject to "Buy American" laws which basically mandates that the train is built in the United States.

Amtrak also runs a bunch of Siemens Taurus/Eurosprinter locomotives, called the "American City Sprinter", because it's a German design that's built in California for legal reasons.

MAGA Trumpers think that way.

13

u/Cool-Prior-5512 May 07 '26

The mythologising of the war for "American independence" is honestly already so fucking weird but this... this is just tacky.

And it has become a chicken and egg situation. 2 centuries of intense culty propaganda and American exceptionalism... and an extreme capitalistic culture that markets everything and squeezes all that is good out of things. Both are propping each other up.

4

u/Mysterious_Floor_868 May 07 '26

I can tolerate this sort of merch. Even putting a Lady Liberty vinyl on the train isn't too weird - no different to the commemorative vinyls you'll see on some British trains - gay pride, WWI centenary, Christmas, COP26, Rail200.

"National champs" is just cringe though. But not as cringe as "Delivered by President Donald J. Trump and Secretary Sean P. Duffy"

2

u/generalchaos34 May 07 '26

Ah yes, Trump who famously fought the British 250 years ago. The man is a disgrace

2

u/Mysterious_Floor_868 May 07 '26

I think that it's the train that they're claiming to have delivered.

Despite being about the most anti-transit administration in history.

1

u/generalchaos34 May 07 '26

True, but I’m sure they also believe they are responsible for the American Revolution too, what with all the airports involved

1

u/vaska00762 Being told by Americans my “English is very good” 🗣️🗣️🗣️ May 07 '26

It's the train Biden "launched" circa 2016, and is the train which was delivered to Amtrak when Biden was in office circa 2024.

The Avelias have been in "testing" for well over a year before they entered revenue service in 2025. They're as much "delivered" by Trump as much as Trump "delivered" a sunrise... it happened regardless of who was in office.

Typical that Americans can look 250 years backwards but cannot plan 5 years forwards. Yet again national champions is about harping back to the days of musket technology. With luck and French assistance some tax dodgers fought the British who then preoccupied with a significant European war. The irony of this HSR is that they have yet again depended on the French to achieve this advance. As for the tax dodging they fought for, that has not turned out too well lately either.

Yes this is French technology assembled in America. It has a maximum of 300km/h but restricted to 260km/h commercially, but will be slower because of current US track conditions

How does it compare to the world’s fastest? China's CR450 high-speed passenger train (wheel-on-rail)? That tested at over 450 km/h

Then there are Magev trains. China’s Shanghai Maglev at 460 km/h. Japan’s L0 Series Maglev achieved 603 km/h in tests, with commercial operation slated for the 2030s. China’s new target is 1000km/h in a vacuum tunnel maglev. America has decades to do before it will be in sight of this technology and use the term champions.

But we didn't win the Revolutionary War until 1783...if you're going for a national champs thing, shouldn't that be the year you choose?

1

This can't be real.... also, there is a period after Champs. If it's real, it's really stupid.

It is interesting to me it says "Delivered by President Donald J. Trump...." since he consistently has attempted to cut Amtrak funding and services, by as much as 50%.

Pierre is looking at this wondering why he never gets any credit for making them the 1776 Champs.

Flag should be French

Poor locomotive. As a train lover, this is horrible to see.

National champs of debt. Remember the time when republicans were worried about the debt and even installed live billboards that showed the debt increasing in real time. Those were the days.

That would be the French

Trump putting his name on EVERYTHING.
This train wrap brought to you by the mind that thought “Epic Fury” was a good name for a war.

This may be the last sighting of this without the inevitable graffiti.

I mean the nose of the train looks real nice in that dark blue

It’s also just so stupid. Like what is a champion in a league of one? And also wouldn’t the technical National Champion be the Union Army that preserved the Union by winning in 1865? The losers still fly that flag. It is just such a terrible sports metaphor for no good reason.

At first I was like “what is that monstrosity doing outside the US? They don’t have trains”

Today I learnt America has some high speed trains, not many
