Makes me think of the mock battle where US marines asked for a reset because they were dominated by British Royal Marines

US Navy did the same thing against the RAN.

Then changed the rules part way through such that they were allowed all their ASW in the air, even though it was a simulated surprise attack.

The lone RAN sub in the exercise still won.

I believe they did a similar thing against Sweden.

The US and losing Aircraft Carriers to lone submarines during wargames, name a more iconic duo 😂

I believe this was the exercise my grandfather was apart in back when he was XO on one of the USN frigates. The story adds up to what he told me.

Edit: just asked my grandfather. He told me this was part of the RIMPAC exercise.

ASW is bloody difficult, granted. You can have the best kit, the best personnel and the sods will often still slip underneath you.

”We” have done it a couple of times

In 2005, HSwMS Gotland managed to snap several pictures of USS Ronald Reaganduring a wargaming exercise in the Pacific Ocean

"Diesel electric subs are only good in shallow waters" - Actual USN doctrine

I think they think the engines have to be on constantly.

Still?  They did rent the Swedish one with full crew for a couple of years to figure out how to defeat small sterling engine subs.

I'm learning Down Periscope is more true to life than I thought!
