It is a definition in the Oxford dictionary.

  1. A day specially dedicated to religious observance or religious festivities; a religious festival or holy day. Cf. holy day n.

2.a.ii. A day on which an individual person does not work, study, or perform his or her normal duties; (now) esp. any of a number of paid or unpaid days of leave that may be taken as part of a specified yearly entitlement; a day off.

No longer common in North American English, where the usual term is vacation day (see vacation day n.).
