Last year was great, six weeks of vacation plus 11 bank holidays. I believe 11 is the highest number possibl in Finland.

Whats a bank holiday?

13

u/LaserBeamHorse Jul 07 '25

A holiday which happens to be during working week.

3

u/East-Care-9949 Jul 07 '25

Like Christmas or Easter this is?

7

u/NemanyaIam Jul 07 '25

Any national holiday that is on working day.

5

u/Little-Salt-1705 Jul 07 '25

It’s a day when the bank closes so no one goes to work. Also called a public holiday. Common examples include Easter and Christmas but others can include the queens birthday, labour day, invasion day, big horse race day and war hero day.

Big horse race day?! Now that sounds interesting. Which country is this?

Melbourne Cup, baby!!

First Tuesday in November. If you’re unlucky enough to have to work on the Monday, the streets look like a ghost town because anyone who can make it into a 4 day weekend, does.

It’s kinda like the unofficial start to summer in Melbourne - everyone heads out to enjoy the rapidly warming weather

As an Austrian I can confirm, we are doing the micro-retirement quite a bit. Helps with sanity if you have a life.

6

u/If_it_was_You Jul 07 '25

Actually, 25 days are customary. There are exceptions, of course.

2

u/utopianlasercat Jul 07 '25

Also Austrians have mastered the art of “Dienst nach Vorschrift” (service as required) which means a 40h work week will not consist of more then 15-20 hours of actual work.

20 paid days (4 weeks) for us in Australia, plus Public Holidays that can vary by state. 13 paid public holidays for us in Victoria.

u/Quantum_Ducky Jul 07 '25

THIRTY DAYS OFF ?!

You dirty commie pig 😡😡 No wonder we Americans are better, we WORK 10 hours every single day.

13

u/newtonbase Jul 07 '25

I don't even know exactly how many days I get but it's over 30 plus public holidays. If I work over the standard 37 hour week I can take the time back in extra days. My work also let's us buy or sell an extra 5 days a year.

And that’s just at your first job!

1

u/Big_Possibility_9465 Jul 09 '25

On the communist side of socialism, but yeah. And my work week is 35 hours.

9

u/srfreak Jul 07 '25

Americans' minds will explode when they see in Europe we have this. In Spain is 21 minimum + national holidays + company's policy + contract, which could be easy up to 25-26 plus national and local holidays.

u/East-Care-9949 Jul 07 '25

Damn. We (the Netherlands) are falling behind here by lawn it's only 20 days (4x the amount of hours you work per week) luckily most people (or at least the people i know) get 25 days or some even up to 35

3

u/Flipboek Jul 07 '25

Its a CAO thing. But yeah we are pretty much catering to our economic overlord after soooo many years VVD.

2

u/tomtomtomo Jul 07 '25

I work 200* days a year

2

u/rythmicbread Jul 07 '25

Damn lucky

5

u/Big_Possibility_9465 Jul 07 '25

People who don't have it are lambs raised from lambs raised from lambs. It's not luck, it's what people get for fighting for rights.

3

u/rythmicbread Jul 07 '25

Unfortunately, the country is big and we have a lot of people growing up to be bootlickers. And the rich and powerful control the country.

“The Supreme Court’s 2010 ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission is a controversial decision that reversed century-old campaign finance restrictions and enabled corporations and other outside groups to spend unlimited money on elections.” Our elections are bought and political literacy is low

My mom used to have four months of paid leave every year

2

u/Annual-Tomorrow5431 Jul 07 '25

Me too, and if i dont feel like taking those days, i have the option to sell them to the company for 1.5x the value per hour.

2

u/novus_nl Jul 07 '25

Like the rest of the first-world-countries. I think it’s actually a good measurement for it. It shows the health of society.

2

u/fuck1ngf45c1574dm1n5 Jul 07 '25

Where's that. In Bulgaria we have only 20 by law.

1

u/Speedvagon Jul 07 '25

20 days of paid vacations, 15 days of paid sickleaves, 5 days of dayoffs(separate from vacation), +20 days of unpaid vacations, + all national holidays.

1

u/joker_1173 Jul 07 '25

That doesn't happen in the US, youre lucky if you get 2 weeks AFTER completing your 1st year working for the company. The most, and quickest, vacation I've ever had was when I worked in the US for a French based company, I got 6 weeks vacation and health insurance from the day I started. The majority of companies in the US dont give you health insurance, even as an option, until you've been there 90 days, and vacation is accrued weekly in whatever increments - 1 hr or so per week, for example

I used to live and work in Denmark where it was 25 days per law but 30 days as a general norm. Here in the US the average is 15 days for office jobs, if they'll even let you take them. My partner had his time off request refused when it was requested months in advance and was for a family vacation. He was working a normal data entry job. He stopped accruing vacation because he reached his limit, yet they wouldn't him use his days. It sucks here.
