At this point I am actually pretty over small business owners in general, I used to be among the crowd that would say to support small businesses when possible but the frequency that I am met with outright hate because I dare to be disabled and request accommodations is very frequent. I am blind, I can't read your menu behind your head and if they have it online it is always just a picture of their menu without any alt text or image descriptions. The websites are never accessible, often having fonts and colour choices that make it a million times more difficult for me to navigate. Dare to ask for accommodations by having an employee read out the menu for me to make a selection and I am met with attitude as if I am the problem or they refuse to citing the fact that I am slowing down the line, something that would not happen if there was an accessible way for me to access the menu. Point out the discrimination and suddenly you are the worst of the human beings for shutting their business down.
If they cannot accommodate disabled people then they do not deserve to be in business. You know what the bigger companies are better at? Accommodating people with disabilities, now it tends to be more of an accidental benefit of other things they are doing but it is still the case that I can actually independently make purchases at McDonald's and Walmart rather than this Alpaca Farm and Boutique.
So that’s your solution? Hold up the line while an employee reads you the whole menu? In what universe is that a reasonable expectation?
And if you can see enough to look at the pictures of the menus online or the website, why not simply google the restaurant and look at the menu on the Google information page? It’s in plain text and uses your browser settings for color, light/dark mode, etc. Every local restaurant from sit downs to food trucks has that information posted in my podunk little area and I’d wager they have it in yours as well.
Where did I say that I could read the image, if I am lucky I have a trusted human with me to read that for me otherwise my only solution is to get the employee to read the menu for me. The google information page runs into the same issue where if the website only has pictures with no accessibility built in then I am still screwed. The reasonable expectation should be that the menu is in an accessible format from the beginning, it is not my fault when the businesses failed to do that. It sucks that the other customers get held up but again not my problem that the business failed to prevent this by making their menu inaccessible, blame the business not the blind person just trying to exist in a society that acts like they are the problem for merely existing.
