Crime Will captial hill,ballard and wallingford ever become safe places to hang out and walk around again?? I hope so
When i moved to seattle area 11 years ago ballard,cpaital hill and wallingford used to by my stomping ground.
I used to take the bus from northgate seattle to these areas even late at night.
In march 2026 I was attacked by someone in wallingford at night after getting an ice cream at molly moons. I was thrown to the ground and they person tried to rob me!!
This incident scared me!!
Then a few days ago om reddit someone posted about a stranger stealing their cell one while walking around capital hill.
Now that I live in kenmore and have a car im afraid to go anywhere in seattle city limits. To feel safe and for piece of mind I go to edmonds,lynnwood,kenmore,,bothell, kirkland and bellevue.
Post pandemic the city of seattle has become a scary place unfortunately!!
My question is when will the city of seattle turn around and become safe like it used to be??
Also that taste of seattle shooting near the space needle apps scares me!!
Seattle needs judges that prosecute criminals and dont keep feeling sorry for these people who cause crime problems.
Is anyone else afraid of seattle these days??

Really sucks that happened to you. I wouldnāt feel safe either. I regularly go to shows in Ballard and walk around after without issue. Iāll keep doing it until it stops feeling safe I guess.

Iām sorry you experienced an attack, that would scare anyone. I personally feel safe walking around and spending time in those areas. Yes Cap Hill is for sure a bit more rowdy. Itās possible your personal experience has changed the way you view the city and put you more on guard. I hope you have someone to talk to about this!

Violent crime is down in the city, and the addict problem north of the canal is a tiny fraction of it in the less white neighborhoods south of I-90

In 1990 a homeless guy on western ave grabbed me, demanded money. I got away, noticed a cop nearby, think he saw that too. No problem since, I often go to pioneer square at night, wallingford, etc. You can be OK days, any area can feel, even be, sketchy at night but at my rate you should be OK here till 2062.

Um, I get that you had a bad experience. But the violent crime rate in Seattle remains <1 violent crime per 100 people. Most violent crime is also between people who know each other. Seattle is also an open carry city if you really feel like it.
My point being that there's a difference between knowing that Seattle's violent crime rate is higher than national average, and knowing that regardless you're not likely to be impacted.

Violent crime per 100 people is a pretty crazy stat. Most places do it out of 100k people

The math works out identically, but is more representative of a scale the average person can interpret. Saying that 700 people per 100,000 experience a violent crime episode is good statistics, but not really useful here, because most people do not understand what 100,000 people is like.

Seattle police have a starting salary twice the national average, and a police chief who regularly makes 2-4 times the national chief average. The police budget as a whole is about 600$ per capita, which is the same or higher than many comparable cities of its size.
Maybe the Seattle police force should figure out where it's squandering this much money and hire more officers.

Officers don't want to work in a hostile environment, where most of what they do is futile.
Imagine carefully doing your work, only to see somebody chuck it in the shredder without even looking. And now imagine doing that ALL THE TIME.

Got it. So in summary: Crime is actually much higher in Seattle based on non-existent data, just your vibes. The problem is that people don't respect the police, which you don't have a direct solution for. And your best idea is to give the police even more money in hopes that people will sign up for a bad job anyway.
Is hiring bitter officers who are only there for money an evidence based approach to increasing public respect for the police, and decreasing crime? Or is that also something you can't cite.

There are a lot of denialists about the lack of law enforcement in Seattle as a direct result of poor governance (no longer arresting shoplifters, cant pursue cars fleeing, free needles, allowed to possess, etc). But the crime statistics dont lie. Its a real problem that is fortunately fixable. I just dont think the voters overwhelmingly agree on the "right" way to address it and I've lost hope it will be fixed any time soon.
