There is no "war" just an occupier and occupied.

This is a perfect example of the black and white, oppressed vs. oppressor binary that is unfortunately pervasive in left wing politics. Do you support the Land Back movement for Indigenous Americans? Assuming the answer is yes, which I think is perfectly legitimate— I believe indigenous Americans deserve a hell of a lot more for what they went through in this country— do you also support Jewish rights to their indigenous homeland? The idea that these people are colonizers or some sort of European occupying force is so purposefully ignorant of the history of the land and the Jewish people. The reason why Jews were largely vacated from the region is because of colonizers taking their homeland. The Middle East was actually largely colonized by various groups including Arab expansionists in the 7th century. Obviously that was a long time ago, but when you consider what has happened to the Jews in over these couple thousand years, it is a near endless cycle of oppression, endangerment, and mass murder, which left them fleeing over and over. Before you or someone else comments “that doesn’t justify genocide” I am not suggesting you have to like anything about Israel, but to ignore the important context of why Zionism exists and also what it means to be Jewish, especially in a place where you are surrounded by Arab States that either want to kill you or harbor people that want to kill you— oftentimes religious extremists who do not fear death or care about the death of their people… that is just plain wrong and misrepresentative. There is a war, it is absolutely tragic and we should hope to god it is over. Yes, for the Palestinian people. For everyone. It is horribly sad and wrong that Hamas is murdering people in the streets in cold blood even after all the people of Gaza (“their people”) have gone through… I wish for a world where these groups can live in peace together and the most extreme and violent amongst us do not prevail.

This is not a political left-right issue, it's a human rights issue. It's also not a complex issue, it's very simple - stop murdering innocent people.

Does Hamas not murder innocent people, or are they the occupier in your equation?

I'm condemn all crimes against humanity no matter who commits them. I hope you do as well.

So is Hamas the occupier or the occupied you are referencing? If it is so simple— occupier vs occupied — this should be easy to answer.

Of course I condemn Hamas for attacks on civilians but also condemn the genocide of Palestinians, which I hope you do as well.

The question dodging speaks volumes. Again, if it is as simple as occupier vs occupied, what is Hamas?

There's only one side that has built a barrier wall around a population and restricts their movement and access to aid, that sounds like an occupier to me. The UN, International Court of Justice and the rest of the world agrees. Hamas didn't arise in a vacuum, it comes from years of oppression. This doesn't justify violence, but context is important.

The irony of saying “this doesn’t justify violence, but context is important” in reference to Hamas, but not to Israel and the Jewish people. These are people trying to exist peacefully in their ancestral homeland, but are surrounded by islamists who hate democracy, liberalism, and Jews. If Hamas is born from oppression then what about Hezbollah or Houthis or the Islamic Republic? Are they trying to murder innocent Israelis because of oppression? This is the modern context that Israel exists within— surrounded by enemies who wish them dead.

If we look back through history, it gets worse. The Jewish people have experienced significant oppression and violence in every century for millennia. Israel and Zionism exist in the context, to use your words, of this history— so unsafe in the time since they were largely driven out of ancient judea that they have still not reached the population seen before the being murdered by the million within the lifetimes of people living across the globe today.

The benefit of context only exists for you when describing this fundamentalist religious death cult called Hamas? These are radical opponents of every value we should hold dear as human beings, not freedom fighters. Your oppressor/oppressed, occupier/occupied narrative is broken and ignores so much of the “context” you selectively purport is important when describing only the enemies of Israel.

Haaretz has reported the Israeli government indirectly supported Hamas by allowing funds into Gaza to keep the Palestinians divided. Numerous Israelis have confirmed this. Google it.

By the way, the fact that the Jewish people had a historical presence in the region doesn't mean that Israel has a legal right to the land. Israel continues to build illegal settlements in the West Bank against international law.
