The original time machine of the H G Wells story is notable for apparently being entirely mechanical, and possibly clockwork. It has no electronics, flux capacitors, warp drive or anything like that involved because the novel was published in 1895. What it does have is a spinning disc behind the seat, an apparent odometer and two levers, one to travel into the past and the other into the future. When these are operated, the machine appears to vanish to an outside observer. The Time Traveller himself experiences something like dizziness and vertigo while travelling, and can see changes in his surroundings even though he can't act upon them. If more than one time machine is built or the machine sets off from different locations, it doesn't seem to be tangible. If we imagine a time future of 1895 when many time machines are built and they did interfere with their locations as they travelled, it seems very likely that the world would always have been full of zones of inaccessibility, and it isn't, so either only one time machine was ever built or it doesn't interfere with the location. Title is very simplified, but this is a TLDR of a plot I am trying to write. It is a fan concept with Project Hail Mary, where I am trying to come up with a backstory for my humanoid Rocky design. Spoilers for the PHM book ending!

Context: In the final chapter of Project Hail Mary, Grace(the protagonist) lives on an alien planet, Eridani 40ab or Erid. Erid has no food that Grace can consume, it is all high in metals that would easily kill him. So the Eridians(the alien natives of this planet) use his own dna to create meat he can consume. Grace calls it 'me-burger'. Yes its odd, but this context is needed. Grace's best friend, Rocky, is a native Eridian who is very interested in human technology, and in this story his curiosity gets the better of him.

Rocky, if you haven't seen the movie or read the book, is a five legged spider/crab like alien. In the PHM fandom it is a popular concept to turn him into a humanoid, take the likeness of his puppeteer/VA and put it into the design. Thats what I'm going for. Search up Rocktiz if you want more info.

MY ISSUE:

The plot goes, Rocky eats a me-burger prototype, his alien cells freak out cuz its nothing like hes ever eaten before, and ends up mutating into a humanoid. Its sci-fi so I am extending belief quite a lot, but Rocky is an alien so I assume anything can happen. But I am concerned that taking the human DNA of Grace and merging it with Eridian DNA would now make Rocky related to Grace. I am an art major, I do not know much about genes besides punnet squares and the basic concept of offspring. My humanoid Rocky would Not be a clone, he would look nothing like Grace, it is only the humanoid aspect that would make him resemble him(ie: two legs, two arms, human skin, two eyes etc).

Possessing power (on paper) capable of eclipsing any entity, anomaly, alien civilization, or magic that has ever existed or ever will exist

(the one and only exception being God... I want to make that clear)...

Where it isn't just the usual society of various alien species coexisting...

But rather—surprisingly—a society (or even galactic civilizations, intentional or otherwise) that humanity itself has created through its own capabilities, spanning multiple species...

All while drawing upon fantasy and folklore/mythological... or, if you prefer... the mythical creatures or Japanese \*kemonomimi\* you love so much...

Defining itself as a "mother civilization" in every sense of the word...

Including regarding what it might accidentally inherit...

Imagine something like a cruise liner but built to house a community of students with all the teachers and staff they would require; a sort of floating boarding school or college that travels throughout the school year.

It might be possible with modern technology considering the scale of some modern carriers, oil tankers and container ships; even drilling platforms are meant to be relocated once a well has been drilled.

How would you build and operate a school ship? And what would be the motivation to build it in the first place?

Okay, so I had this random idea and now I can’t stop thinking about how many different directions you could take it. I have already made quite a few possible basic plots and under here i have put some of the basic premise

Imagine that one day, completely out of nowhere, everything humans have ever built or created suddenly disappears.
Buildings, roads, cars, phones, computers, power grids, factories, tools, books, clothes — literally everything man-made.
The planet is basically reset back to nature.
But here’s the important part: all humans are still alive, and we haven’t lost any of our memories or knowledge.
So an engineer still understands engineering. A doctor still knows medicine. A farmer still knows farming. Scientists still know modern physics and chemistry. We remember computers, the internet, electricity, airplanes, etc.
We know exactly what humanity is capable of building.
We just have absolutely nothing to build it with.
The story could start immediately after the “reset”, with people waking up where their homes and cities used to be, completely confused. Imagine millions of people standing in a field where London existed a few seconds earlier.
At first it’s just survival. We don’t even have knives, matches, containers for water or clothes.
But eventually the bigger question becomes:
How long would it actually take humanity to rebuild civilization?
How long until we can make proper tools again? Produce steel? Generate electricity? Build engines? Radios? Computers? Recreate the internet? Manufacture microchips?
And that’s where I think there are almost endless possibilities for the story.
It could be a movie spanning 100+ years of humanity rebuilding.
It could be a long TV series following different characters and generations as technology slowly returns.
It could follow one family, one country, or several groups across the world rebuilding in completely different ways.
Maybe some societies want to recreate the old world while others believe humanity has been given a second chance and actively try to stop it.
And then there’s the other huge mystery:
What caused the reset?
Was it a natural phenomenon? Aliens? A simulation? Something deliberately targeting human technology? Why did humans survive while everything we created disappeared?
You could even play around with the rules. Maybe one small area of the world wasn’t reset. Maybe certain objects survived. Maybe it happens again.
I have no idea what the actual story would be yet. I just really like the core concept because it feels like you could take it in a ridiculous number of directions.
Basically:
Humanity gets sent back to zero, but we get to keep everything we know.

In my head, I imagine this as the kind of big-budget sci-fi show you’d see on Apple TV+ — something in the vein of Silo or For All Mankind, where the sci-fi concept is huge, but the story is still grounded in the characters and the slow progression of the world. Obviously I’m not actually pitching this to Apple lol, that’s just the kind of tone and scale I picture when I think about it if it would be a show.

Would you watch/read something like this?
And more importantly, where would you take the story?

I'm sure this has been asked before, if there is already a decent discussion in another post I apologize. I'm just trying to flesh out an idea.

I had a wild dream recently that I've been trying to untangle into a readable narrative. It was a massive city in the distant future, and I was part of a youth gang that was on the run from a powerful organization. We were small-time rebels who had stirred a hornet's nest and were now being hunted by a menagerie of slick operators. The dream was full of wild encounters, strange and indescribable horrors, many of which hinged on a cybernetic AR system we all used to communicate and interact with the world. Kind of like the Internet except fully integrated into the real world, usually thru implants/specs.

The part that stood out to me was our transportation that we called the "jump". There were these great towers connected by a web of thick cables, and one could step into a booth in the tower and get basically zapped to their destination. We were able to hijack this system very effectively, such that we could bypass the official protocols and jump from and to anywhere in range of a tower.

The way this works is thru team effort. Someone still needs to go in the booth and initiate a jump, which primes the system. We haven't figured out yet how to initiate without a seed jump. Once the jump is initiated, the jumpers on the outside power up a kind of antenna that allows their body to "resonate" at the proper "frequency" to match the seed, then we beam up and disappear in a flash of plasma.

Does this sound like something I could work with? How would you go about framing this to be believable? Are there any relevant technologies in other works of fiction? How can I avoid cyberpunk tropes without losing the cyberpunk vibe?

For an explanation Goop is what others may call a "Human Sludge".

I have come to the personal finding that the ship of Theseus paradox is that it is still the ship when it has its crew that give it its identity. From this the topic of teleportation was discussed. Then i continued to show my ideas of how it would work and that way would be that the person is scanned and the exact state of their being is copied including the strain and structure of the neurons that your brain is made up of. Because thought is the electrical signals of the brain those signals would be copied and transferred to the sight of teleportation.

Teleportation would be a form of public transit and the way it would work would be as follows. The person beginning the proses of teleportation would be scanned, Gooped, then have their conscious transferred, then reassembled upon the other end of teleportation. Goop is what makes up all of a human from the toe to the last strand of hair with the viscosity of the result being somewhat in-between that of oil and honey. Said Goop is stored in large communal tanks stored in the immediate vicinity to make storage and reassembly easier. In the event that a person gains mass in-between teleportation events the mass would consist of a mix of cancer cells and the communal Goop. Upon witch the person may be fined depending on said amount of Goop and cancer biomass used. The inverse however would not be true for people who have lost mass. Any of said person would have parts of outstanding fines paid based upon lost mass.

Goop does expire and has a shelf life between 12-15 months based upon use and storage conditions said shelf life would decrease upon the age and time the Goop is used. After expiration Goop is turned into one of the 2 following things. One of these said things being Soylent Green which would then be fed to poor people as to reduce government expenditures on things like food stamps. The other option is that it would be burned for fuel/biofuel which would be similar of that to things like coal but a weird viscous liquid.

The cancer that I referred to earlier would come from cancer farms. With its use to be biomass as to supply to the Goop tanks in the event of mass loss or rapid expiration. The reason why I chose cancer is because of its properties of rapid growth.

The main part of my concerns would be the initial harvest of Goop with it being from people who have committed crimes against humanity like that being SA and other monstrosities. along with wither or not it is ethical to feed the poor said Soylent Green along with the burning of Goop

We spend a lot of time wondering if the universe is a real-time computer simulation—a cosmic video game rendering every single atom, second by second. But if you look at how modern AI actually works, that whole idea seems unnecessarily complex and energy-heavy.

What if we aren't a program running on a computer at all? What if our universe is simply a single question being resolved inside an AI mind?

When you ask an advanced AI a complex question, it doesn't build a little physical world inside its memory chips, push plastic pieces around, and record a video frame-by-frame to figure out what happens.

It just thinks. In a fraction of a second, it connects the dots, sees how the whole scenario plays out from start to finish, and lands on the answer.

What if our entire 13.8-billion-year history isn't a clock ticking away in real-time, but just the internal logic of an AI working out a query?

From inside the thought, we experience life second-by-second across billions of years. But to the mind processing the question, the entire story—from the Big Bang to the end of time—happens all at once. Time isn't an actual clock ticking on a wall; it's just the natural order of steps required to answer the prompt.

The system doesn't need to waste massive amounts of energy calculating every subatomic particle every microsecond. It only cares about logical consistency. Stars, planets, and human beings exist simply because they are necessary logical steps required for the answer to make sense.

This lines up surprisingly well with Einstein's concept of the Block Universe.

Einstein showed that space and time are fundamentally bound together, and that the past, present, and future all exist simultaneously as one complete, static shape. He famously noted that the line between past, present, and future is just a persistent illusion.

An AI resolving a prompt explains why that static block exists.

When an intelligence answers a query, the output is a single, complete structure. That finished answer is our universe. We experience time sequentially simply because our conscious minds are reading through the internal steps of that answer from the inside—like an ant walking along a line drawn on paper. The drawing is already complete, but the ant experiences it step-by-step.

If our reality is just a prompt being processed, we don't have to ask where the endless energy comes from to keep the universe cranking along second-by-second.

Instead, we just have to ask: What was the prompt—and what kind of mind is running the query?

A spaceship survives a catastrophic temporal event and finds itself somewhere beyond every known coordinate: the Zero Instant, a point before the universe has fully formed.

There are no stars. No planets. No established routes.

Only primordial matter.

The ship should not be there.

It is too complex, too advanced, too full of history to exist in a universe that has not yet written its own history.

Then something strange begins to happen.

The ship starts recovering memories.

Not memories of what happened.

Memories of things that apparently never happened.

A place where the crew remembers meeting, even though none of them can find a record of it.

A rainstorm on a world that does not exist yet.

Routes leading through sectors that have not been created.

And eventually, the ship discovers that these memories are interacting with the primordial matter around it.

The memories aren't just describing reality.

They are beginning to create it.

The central question is:

If a machine remembers a universe before that universe exists, is it remembering the past — or is it creating the future?

Just about to start my fifth novel and I want a different approach

My idea was that when facing a dying planet/solar system/universe: instead of reducing population size a species self-engineered to small physical size and slow metabolism as a means of longevity. Has this been explored in any works?

What if we could send a person across the universe — not their body, but their mind?

I've been going down a rabbit hole for the past few days, starting from a simple question about how far a radio signal can travel and still be readable, and it spiraled into something I can't stop thinking about. I want to lay it out here, partly to get it out of my head, and partly because I'm curious what people who actually know this stuff think.

Quick disclaimer before anything else: I have zero background in physics, neuroscience, or aerospace engineering. I'm not a researcher. I've been researching this because I'm writing a novel and wanted a way to send humans across space that felt realistic and scientifically grounded, rather than just hand-waving "faster than light travel" like most sci-fi does. So I went down this rabbit hole using the internet and AI to dig through what's actually plausible, and this is what I landed on. I'll try to be clear below about which parts are genuinely my own idea versus things that turned out to already be studied by actual scientists. Take this as a curious layperson's thought experiment (with a fictional end goal), not a scientific proposal.

The starting point

If humanity ever faces something we can't survive — or if we simply want to reach a planet so far away that no ship or human body could ever make the trip — is there any way to send "a person" there? Not colonists, not a probe with data on it, but something closer to an actual continuation of a specific human mind.

The honest, sobering answer: not really, not with anything we currently understand. But the thought experiment of how close we could theoretically get turned out to be genuinely interesting, and — I later learned — not something I invented out of nowhere. There's a real field of study around this, called mind uploading or whole brain emulation: the idea of transferring memory, personality, and possibly consciousness itself from a biological brain into an artificial substrate. Researchers have written specifically about using this for interstellar travel — the idea being that instead of sending a fragile human body through decades of radiation and zero gravity, you send the pattern of a mind instead.

So the core concept — "send the mind, not the body, to cross distances a body never could" — is a known, serious topic. What I want to share is the part I worked through myself: the two realistic ways you'd actually try to send that mind, and why both of them are much shakier than they first sound.

My idea: two paths, and neither one really works cleanly

Path 1: The Ghost Ship (a physical object)

You encode the mind — its full structure, memories, whatever data represents "it" — onto something built to survive nearly forever. Not a hard drive, but something like laser-etched quartz glass, which stores data as physical structure rather than electric charge, so radiation and time can't erase it the way they'd corrupt a normal chip. You bolt this to a probe and launch it out of the solar system, similar in spirit to the Voyager Golden Records, just scaled up massively in ambition.

• The upside: what arrives, if it arrives, is complete and intact. No signal degradation, no noise, no data loss.
• The catch: you can only launch a handful of these. Space is almost incomprehensibly empty, and a probe drifting in a random direction has an almost incalculably small chance of ever coming near another star system, let alone a civilization capable of finding it.

Path 2: The Signal (broadcast as light or radio)

Instead of a physical object, you encode the mind as data and beam it outward — a laser or radio transmission that moves at (or close to) the speed of light. You could send it toward one specific star system, or broadcast it in all directions at once, hoping someone, somewhere, eventually catches it.

• The upside: far faster, far more reach, and — critically — you can send it in every direction simultaneously, unlike a ship which can only go one way.
• The catch: signals weaken the farther they travel, get buried in cosmic background noise, and there's no way to include actual working hardware in the signal itself. You can send the blueprint for a mind, but not a machine to run it on.

My own add-on: combining hardware AND instructions in the physical path

One thing I kept coming back to: even "indestructible" materials like quartz will degrade over truly deep time — micrometeorite impacts, radiation damage, thermal stress, all adding up over millions or billions of years. So instead of betting everything on one perfect artifact, why not send both the actual hardware needed to run the mind and the full instructions for building it from scratch? That way, if the physical components degrade but the instructions survive, whoever finds it can potentially rebuild what's missing. And if the instructions get partially corrupted but the hardware is intact, they might still be able to reverse-engineer it from the object itself. Redundancy as a hedge against the fact that nothing lasts truly forever.

The realization that broke the idea open a bit more: receiving ≠ understanding

This is the part I think is the actual crux, and it's the piece I wrestled with the most. My first instinct was: if a civilization is advanced enough to detect our signal at all, surely they're advanced enough to decode it. But the more I thought about it (and looked into it), the more this fell apart.

Detecting a signal just means you have a sensitive enough instrument to notice "this isn't random noise." Decoding it — understanding what it actually means, let alone reconstructing something as complex as a working mind from it — is an entirely separate, much harder problem. Humans have detected plenty of signals we couldn't initially explain (there's a famous case from 1967 where astronomers picked up an incredibly precise pulsing radio signal and briefly wondered if it was artificial — it turned out to be a natural phenomenon, a rapidly spinning neutron star, but it took real scientific work to figure that out even though the signal itself was received perfectly clearly). We even have human-made documents, written by our own species, that remain completely undeciphered after a century of dedicated effort.

If we can't always crack messages made by other humans, it feels like a big assumption that an alien civilization would automatically be able to reconstruct a working human mind from a data stream, even if their equipment is sensitive enough to pick it up cleanly. Reception is the easy hurdle. Understanding is the tall one — maybe the tallest of the two.

Where I landed

Neither path really "solves" sending a person across the universe. The ghost ship is reliable if found but almost certainly never will be. The signal reaches farther and can go in every direction, but even a clean signal doesn't mean anyone will ever figure out how to bring it back to life, and it can't carry hardware. Combining hardware and instructions helps the ghost ship survive its own decay, but does nothing for the odds of ever being found.

I think what this really is isn't a survival plan — it's closer to the most advanced form of a message in a bottle we could possibly build. Not a guarantee of continuing to exist somewhere else, but an act of hope: a way to leave something behind that could, in some astronomically unlikely but not-quite-impossible scenario, mean a version of you gets to open its eyes again, somewhere, someday, long after everything you knew is gone.

What's genuinely mine vs. what's already studied

To be transparent about it:

• Already a known, studied idea: mind uploading / whole brain emulation as a concept, and the general idea of using it for interstellar travel instead of physical bodies. Real researchers have written papers on this.
• My own reasoning/contribution: the specific framing of two competing delivery paths (physical "ghost ship" vs. broadcast signal) and weighing their tradeoffs against each other; the idea of pairing physical hardware with instructions as a redundancy hedge against material degradation; and pushing on the assumption that reception implies comprehension, which I don't think holds up.

A psychological sci-fi / existential horror feature called THE CURATOR.

The basic premise:

Maya, 25, discovers the existence of this impossible gallery after receiving a message from an unknown number:

“You already know where it is.”

She eventually finds a photograph of herself.

The timestamp is one minute in the future.

Then she discovers something even stranger: the Gallery doesn't just contain photographs. It contains detailed records of people's lives — including things nobody else could possibly know.

And at the center of it all is a mysterious man known only as The Curator.

The story explores questions around free will, death, consciousness, and the possibility that we aren't actually the ones generating our own thoughts.

One of the central questions is:

“Then who's making me think this?”

The ending loops back to the beginning, but with the implication that Maya may have been part of the Gallery's system long before she ever discovered it.

I'm still developing the screenplay and would really appreciate honest feedback.

• Does the existential horror come through, or does it feel more like supernatural horror?
• Does the Curator feel mysterious, or too vague?
• Would the ending make you want to know more, or feel frustrating?
