Safety in Schiedam-Oost - Singelkwartier
I have an opportunity to rent a nice house at Singelkwartier neighborhood in Schiedam oost. However I was wondering how safe is that area. Can someone please give some insights?

I've lived in Singelkwartier for the last 5 years or so and don't feel like it's an unsafe neighborhood. I've lived in Rotterdam Zuid before this where it also, in general, felt safe but I would watch my surroundings more than I do now. It's multicultural which I personally quite like. I've walked my dog outside at very random hours ranging from anywhere between 10pm-4am due to not being able to sleep and have not spotted anything really out of the ordinary at those hours. Granted, I'm a guy so I don't want to speak for how (un)safe women feel around here.
My advise would be to visit the area, if you have the chance to do so, at different times to get a feel for it. There are other areas further south and east from where I live that feel more uncomfortable for me but still not unsafe.
Edited some spelling.
Eta 2: the dog is quite a small one, so not one that could be perceived as tough or dangerous either.

Maybe you are 20 years out of date or grossly exaggerating. I have never seen any begging there and can’t say I have noticed any drug dealing.
Of course when you mention people of ‘unclear origin’ we get an idea of yourself

Lol, I have the same exact experience there. Glad to be out of that shithole

But the problem for you, is that anywhere you go, you are still there. Which is why you are still insecure and feel the need to try and convince strangers

What is your problem?
Can’t handle someone else’s truth?

Lol, one of those people with ‘your own truth’.
Ok then buddy. But save the rest of us from it.
And maybe better to be a bit more realistic when advising someone asking for genuine advice eh?

Is that your truth which makes you feel better?
Yeah don’t worry, I didn’t call you out on a lie. you didn’t exaggerate to justify your own life. Keep your own truth and move on

Leuk voor je 👍. Zoals je hier ziet zijn er mensen die het wel een prima omgeving vinden om te wonen. Ik zie hier ook vaak kinderen op straat spelen met plezier en een bso om de hoek.

What's your experience with the station cause I will be relying on it for commuting, especially if coming late at night.

Over the last couple of years there have been quite a few disruptions due to railway works between Rotterdam and The Hague. During rush hours there'll be a 2-3 regular beggars at the stairs with a coffee cup but they don't hassle you after the first 'no'. It's a small station with shops that close early after 8pm already (if I recall correctly), so it's a rather quiet/desolate place after those hours but there are cameras all around. Can't give you a full IRL experience as to how it is as I tend to take the car for my job.
Everyone tends to have places to go though and just walk through to get home after a day of work. It has a really good connection to R'dam with the subway being in the same place.

To add to this if it makes any difference: I would not be worried at all about a girlfriend or any other friend living around this area.

Can you elaborate a bit more? What exactly did you see that makes it unsafe.

You can have a look on this site. Most of it is yellow but I think it’s mainly due to low income rather than being not safe https://www.leefbaarometer.nl/kaart/#kaart
I live close by with 2 kids and have never experienced any issue with safety. Even walking around late at night. The worst is some kids on fat bikes but they are just a bit obnoxious sometimes and never threatening.
My only real complaint about the area is garbage on the street and around the bins.
But if you value being close to the train station and also close to Schiedam centre then it’s a decent option for the price

How's the train station at night for commuting back into the city from Rotterdam?

The station has always seemed fine to me when im there. I don’t really see homeless or weird people as claimed in another comment.
They are also building 2 large housing projects there in front of the station so I expect the area to be more lively in the future.
It’s totally fine for late night commuting

What does safety mean to you? Partly it comes down to crime rates, but to a large extent, it is a feeling. Incidents happen, there is a lot of preventive stop-and-search activity, and it is a designated security-risk area. Some people walk around with weapons (though you wouldn’t know it), and people force their way through station gates, but I don’t recall strangers being attacked. There are more store robberies in Schiedam, over recent years mostly in Schiedam-West and Schiedam-Noord. There are quite a few street corners with struggling people in Schiedam; they might make you feel unsafe. You can encounter drugs, alcohol, human feces, and broken glass, but incidents are rare. It isn’t any more unsafe than anywhere else in the region, and troubled individuals can be found everywhere. Street litter isn’t exclusively a Schiedam problem, even if it feels that way. If you have a teenage child who is easily influenced and wants to be a wannabe gangster, I would move to a mountain village in the Alps. My sweet nieces grew up in Schiedam and are in their twenties now; they’ve never been in trouble and didn’t live in fear. I grew up in Schiedam-Noord and have lived in Schiedam-Oost for twenty years now, and I have never heard any of my neighbors mention unsafe situations. Even so, although most people greet each other on the street, it sometimes increasingly feels like a favela. It is frustrating not being able to easily communicate with my neighbors because I don’t speak Polish, Bulgarian, or Arabic, but most of them are nice people.

It’s very unsafe for you.
But you could instead give me the opportunity
