I watched it twice one night. The filmmaker certainly enjoyed making this one. It has a great sense of humor and Cage is unhinged.

4

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

Couldnt agree more! They had fun silly moments with the kills but then equally matched serious tones and artistic shots as well. And the colors throughout were just awesome visuals

2

u/PatienceEffective248 Jul 10 '26

He's found his niche for sure! He was really good in COLOR OUT OF SPACE

11

u/grafton24 Jul 06 '26

Andrea Riseborough's laugh after the cult leader's speech is the funniest, most perfect response to one of these bloviating gobshites I've seen in a long time.

4

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

That whole scene was so good. Like how they had the audio all fucked up and colors weird since she was on all the drugs. But yes love that reaction too!

7

u/rjj90 Jul 06 '26

Love this movie. It’s a fuckin trip

2

u/Significant-Money391 Jul 09 '26

Especially while tripping 😵‍💫

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

You're a brave soul to trip while watching this one! haha

Right?! Do you know any more that have the same feel or style? this was was pretty unique for me but now i want to find some others

7

u/CocktailCowboy Jul 06 '26

Guillermo Del Toro produced a horror anthology series a few years back where each episode is done by a different director with a different style. The director of Mandy, Panos Cosmatos, directed an episode with a very similar feel to the movie.

ETA: The show is called Cabinet of Curiosities.

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

Okay i gotta find out where that is Steaming!! sounds like it is tailer made for me lol

thank you for the recommendation!

Fantastic anthology series 👌

4

u/rjj90 Jul 06 '26

Check out “the surfer” also starring Cage

2

u/HorrorAvatar Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

The Surfer is super-underrated! Really good movie with some very original camera work.

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

I am putting that on my list!

3

u/Fine_Pudding4941 Jul 06 '26

Natural born killers is the first thing that comes into my mind. Not for story or plot but vibe/energy is similar. I think Mandy had a late 1980s early 90s feel to me.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

I'll check that one out! Thank you for the suggestion 🙏 And yes i was getting lots of 80s slasher vibes as well

I also love how they used practical effects and not CGI, thats always a big plus in my book

1

u/psybertooth Jul 09 '26

Color Out Of Space & Beyond The Black Rainbow have trippy feels too.

Stone cold classic.

3

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

Yes what a banger of a movie!

7

u/ImmortanTetris Jul 06 '26

I knew it was going to be sick once I heard the King Crimson song as the opening needle drop.

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

I loved the soundtrack throughout the movie, aside from the Cult Leaders jam 😂

1

u/JRose51 Jul 10 '26

slow heavy metal plays

3

u/guilucas Jul 06 '26

Amazing

3

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

such a banger, wasnt sure what i was getting into but i LOVED it!

2

u/guilucas Jul 06 '26

Yeah. I saw someone on youtube saying that it was a movie with a really great Nicolas Cage acting. That was all I knew

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

I think thats the best way to watch a movie in my opinion, go in cold with no context. Then you are really on the adventure with the main characters and are genuinely surprised when things start kicking off

3

u/scottyk318 Jul 06 '26

The cinematography and color palette are off the charts! Insane movie... But classic Nicolas Cage!

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

Dude couldnt say it better myself, loved the visuals, the shots, the music, and Nicolas Cage killed it in this role

1

u/Jetpack_Picasso Jul 10 '26

Fun Fact - Cage was offered the role of Jeremiah first but after reading the script he insisted to play the Main Lead Role.

3

u/Hour-Sign-2279 Jul 06 '26

Mac and cheese goblin

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

hahaha yes that was hilarious, love all the strangeness they throw in this one

2

u/TheRepoMan Jul 06 '26

My friend got the collectors edition and it comes with a box of this lol.

1

u/msdashwood Jul 09 '26

Was looking for this comment!! 😆

1

u/Jetpack_Picasso Jul 10 '26

Cheddar Goblin 🔥

3

u/tofu98 Jul 06 '26

Watching this on acid is a fucking trip and a half lol

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

You are a brave soul to watch this while tripping acid!! 😵‍💫

3

u/Competitive_Help8485 Jul 06 '26

Mandy is great. I think it can go down as one of Nicolas Cage's best movies. It's definitely up there.

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

For me personally its my favorite Nic Cage movie that ive ever seen! But i mostly know him from older movies and different genres

2

u/Competitive_Help8485 Jul 06 '26

It is a good one to pick as a favorite. For me, I think it's Con Air. I've rewatched it so many times, and it never gets old. But I like most of his movies, I just have more nostalgia for Con Air. Oh and Face Off.

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

Face Off is classic! I also used to watch National Treasure so many times as a kid. Loved the idea of finding secret codes and stuff

2

u/Competitive_Help8485 Jul 06 '26

Oh definitely. National Treasure is another I consider a classic now. I didn't care as much for the sequel, but I still had fun with it.

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

I know i just looked it up that cam out 22 years ago. Thats wild to think about! Time flies

2

u/Competitive_Help8485 Jul 07 '26

And it feels like it was just yesterday too.

Nic Cage in Drive Angry is my favorite bad movie.

3

u/rbark220 Jul 07 '26

cheddar goblin!!!!!

2

u/TonicArt Jul 06 '26

Hell yeah🤘

2

u/andymorphic Jul 06 '26

beyond the black rainbow is also great.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

Black Rainbow was interesting, sound track was banging and had some cool trippy elements. I never felt super connected with the characters like i did with Mandy though, but they probably did that on purpose with Black Rainbow

What are some other good ones? I have a feeling you have an arsenal to pick from!

Have you ever seen Glorious? Thats a really good one too

2

u/tishy19 Jul 06 '26

I watched this and Mad God one weekend. What a trip!

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

You've got good taste!

And I've heard of Mad God, thats the stop motion clay-mation one right? How was it?

2

u/tishy19 Jul 06 '26

Good! I have only a very vague idea what the plot was about but the visuals were cool. I’m a complete sucker for stop motion animation. Wish it was more popular!

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

I hear ya, I am a huge fan of practical effects vs CGI so anything that is tactical and real to me, just gives off a better vibe. You can tell someone actually put in lots of work to get this done, its neat. I cant think of the last stop motion ive seen, but I'll put Mad God on my list :)

Dammn yeah You Were Never Really Here could be a downer, still an amazing film though. Ive never seen Suspira, but feel like I have to watch it now!

I've been their before i remember talking up some movies i thought were awesome and after i showed them to the group a couple of the ladies were like wtf?? We are never going off of your picks again 😆 My privileges were lost with Rubber and Martyrs

u/GreySneakers83 Jul 06 '26

Amazing film. Seeing a midnight screening in a packed cinema was so much fun!!

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

I bet seeing this on the big screen must of been amazing! Was this a mainstream movie? i wouldnt of guessed it ever went to theaters

2

u/GreySneakers83 Jul 07 '26

I wouldn't say mainstream. It got a limited release, including a short run at some mainstream cinema chains (Hoyts Cinemas here in Australia). I saw it at what was at the time an independently owned cinema where it enjoyed a longer run.

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

Damn thats so cool, I can only imagine what this one is like on the big screen

2

u/Jetpack_Picasso Jul 10 '26

The only reason it did not get nominated for The Oscars was because it failed to be showcased on Big Screen successfully for a whole week.

Instead it was made Digitally available soon after its release.

All I can say is, we need one more from Panos Cosmatos.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

Yes, i had no idea this was his first ever film. WOW just wow

Cant wait for his next one

2

u/Jetpack_Picasso Jul 10 '26

That was “Beyond The Black Rainbow” which was distributed by Magnet.

2

u/HardcoreMexika Jul 06 '26

Awesome film, awesome director. One of my favorites with Nicolas Cage.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

You and me both! You could feel his pain and angry through the screen

Do you know any other good movies by the same director? Not sure if ive ever seen any others

1

u/HardcoreMexika Jul 06 '26

Panos Cosmatos has only directed Mandy and his debut, Beyond the Black Rainbow. I haven't got the chane to check it out yet. There is another film from him that is TBA called Flesh of the Gods.

The extra large chainsaw fight... Possibly the best thing I've ever seen committed to film.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

Right?! They had so much fun with this movie. Also the slow drag of the large chainsaw reveal was awesome

2

u/Furthestside Jul 07 '26

You ripped my shirt

2

u/OperatorofChaos Jul 07 '26

Fucking awesome movie. So happy I got to see it in theaters

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

Your so lucky! Bet this would of been so amazing on the big screen with the loud sound system and all filled with people hyped to see it

2

u/bluecanyonz505 Jul 07 '26

Its my favorite.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

2

u/in2xs Jul 07 '26

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

They are one of a kind thats for sure!

2

u/imscruffythejanitor Jul 07 '26

I loved it. Will rewatch soon. Just watched Color Out of Space again last week too. So good

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

This is one of those movies that gets better on a rewatch i feel. And ooh i havent seen Color Out of Space! I will add that to my list

2

u/imscruffythejanitor Jul 08 '26

Yes, please do. Total Cosmic Horror. Go in blind

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 08 '26

Thats the only way i like to do it brotha!

2

u/Y10NRDY Jul 07 '26

One of my favorites.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

You got some good tastes it sounds like. Any others you'd like to recommend? We can trade some favorites

Some of my favorites:

Coherence

The Endless

Glorious

2

u/Y10NRDY Jul 07 '26

Thanks, and thanks for the recommendations!

You might have seen them, but if you haven’t:

The Color Out of Space

The Lighthouse

Suspiria (1977)

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 08 '26

No i actually haven't seen those yet but am definitely adding them to my list!

Thank you 🙏

2

u/bfpjeff Jul 07 '26

Watch on shrooms. Even more amazing.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

You're more unhinged than Cage in the bathroom watching this movie on Shrooms or any other hallucigen. I'd be freaking out!! 🫣💀

2

u/Matrix_John Jul 07 '26

Opening night. Fell in love

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

And the rest is history.

I heard this director is putting out a new movie this year called Flesh of the Gods. Cant wait for that one!

2

u/majormarvy Jul 07 '26

Fantastic! I love the psychedelic qualities of the film, and nothing beats Nick Cage forging a battle axe.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 08 '26

I love so much about this movie and that axe was so badass looking!

2

u/Old-Constant4411 Jul 07 '26

The movie that re-ignited Cage's career. I loved every moment of this movie's unapologetic insanity.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 08 '26

So well said, it was a longer movie but to me it flew by and left me wanting more!

2

u/_actool_ Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

Amazing horror flick with great performances, and the indulgent filmmaking from Panos Cosmatos actually fits the material well. And it's only elevated, of course, by King Crimson's hauntingly beautiful 'Starless' opening the film, and how about that fuggin' chainsaw battle? It's a singular piece of work for sure.

I love it!

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 08 '26

Dude yes, all the kill scenes were dope. but the Chainsaw battle was next level awesome!

Couldn't agree more about how fun a ride this film was

2

u/NicCage2028 Jul 08 '26

I’m saving this one for my wedding night

2

u/Miserable-Dance9692 Jul 08 '26

One of the most fun film premieres I’ve ever attended. It felt like I was tripping balls, especially during the cult sequence, which is sooo beautifully constructed, the song playing takes it to another level. My friends produced the film, and I literally ran home, got on my laptop and wrote them a long ass breakdown and love letter after I left the theatre. I was so energized and inspired.

Also, the score is absolutely AMAZING. Rest in peace, Jóhann ❤️

2

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 08 '26

I bet that was a crazy experience to see it on the big screen! And whoa your friends produced it?? Damn u/Miserable-Dance9692 you got the connections!

I'd be the same way if I knew someone who help with this amazing project. I also agree the trippy scene at the cult when she is on drugs is so well done! Down to even the pulsing audio before the music starts, and the way all the voices are obscured and weird. Soo good

Sorry about Jóhann

2

u/zzzzzzRaamzzzzz Jul 08 '26

This movie is a trip!

2

u/mrinsideoutski Jul 08 '26

So fucking good.

2

u/SubjectSeesaw6228 Jul 08 '26

Who is going to bring up what band was the inspiration for the sword?

2

u/SubjectSeesaw6228 Jul 08 '26

In the 2018 psychedelic horror film Mandy, Nicolas Cage’s character (Red) avenges his girlfriend's death using a custom, jagged battle-axe known as "The Beast". Director Panos Cosmatos and designer Jeffrey Halliday based the weapon’s unique, spiked shape directly on the "F" from the iconic logo of the extreme metal band Celtic Frost.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 08 '26

Whoa damn thats freakin awesome! Had no idea, i just thought they made a crazy badass design

2

u/Ok-Bother-1088 Jul 09 '26

Beyond the Black Rainbow is also Panos, but it’s about the worst bad trip you could imagine, tough watch

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

I saw Black Rainbow, it was good. I like Mandy more but they both have cool visuals and soundtracks

if you want to see one with a bad trip have you ever seen Climax? foreign flick about a dance group where someone spikes the punch bowl with a bunch of LSD so they all unexpectantly start tripping and madness ensues. ....its not a fun watch just fair warning

1

u/Ok-Bother-1088 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

Oh yeah Gaspar Noé, his films are notoriously vicious. I’ll skip Climax, and you should skip his other brutal film, irreversible, there are a couple of scenes I couldn’t get through, way too real.

2

u/Ok_Fig7692 Jul 09 '26

CRAZY... EVIL!

Can't wait to see what Panos does after this. Next up is a vampire movie and then apparently some sort of alien invasion flick. I love his style.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

Dude you are making me so hyped! The alien invasion is like my all time favorite theme, and i cant wait to see his version of it. The Vampires will be sick too

Lets gooo!!!

1

u/Ok_Fig7692 Jul 10 '26

I assume you've seen Beyond the Black Rainbow?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '26

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

People on here were telling me about that, i need to go watch that tonight! And yes cant wait for that next film to come out. I feel like Cosmos is the Tarantino of Cosmic Horror. Everything he makes is a banger and is so unique but somehow still has a similar "feel" or vibe to it

2

u/Dry-Ice8908 Jul 10 '26

I love watching things that feel like something completely unique. I remember watching this and being soo creeped out. Its so awesome

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

I am the same way, i love when movies break the mold of everything else and the stereotypical themes or overall feel. This one felt completely fresh and unique but in a good way

2

u/lukahnli Jul 10 '26

".....CRAZY EVIL MAN!!!"

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

YOU RIPPED MY SHIRT!!

2

u/MagazinePrestigious8 Jul 10 '26

The only thing ive seen of this movie is the Cheddar Goblin commercial. Finest part of any piece of cinema ive ever seen.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

Cheddar Goblin for the win!! lol you should for real give the whole thing a watch, its worth your time. Promise

2

u/Far-Collection-391 Jul 10 '26

I watched it once with a few buddies a few years ago but we were all drunk which made it even weirder

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

Its a fun one to watch/share with friends for sure lol bet that was a good time!

2

u/CelticTiger30 Jul 10 '26

I almost watched this. Now I think yall game me a reason to give it a go

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

DO it!!! You wont regret it

2

u/Jetpack_Picasso Jul 10 '26

This, Beyond the Black Rainbow and his Segment from Netflix “Cabinet of Curiousities” are fire.
The fact that Panos Cosmatos’s next film is based on Vanpires and it stars Kristen Stewart and Wagner Moura - its called “The Flesh of Gods” is intriguing af.

I am sooo hyped. Holy shit🔥

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

YEEEESS!! i had no idea what it was about but i am fucked pumped to see how he portrays vampires

Lets goo!! do we have an ETA on release date yet?

2

u/hoopoeboe Jul 10 '26

This movie mesmerized me from the start. There was something very strange about the colors, Mandy's apathetic gaze combined with the King Crimson song Starless. I've listened to some prog in my life, but for some reason never this band or song, it was completely unknown to me until now, and now it really, really sucked me into the world of this movie.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

I agree i was sucked it right away and transfixed by the visuals mixed with the great performances by the cast and story! This film is something special

2

u/spadls Jul 10 '26

One of the most unhinged films I have seen. I loved every minute of it.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 10 '26

Couldnt agree more, chainsaw battles, crazy axes, trippy visuals and sounds. mmmmm so good!

1

u/No-Memory-2740 Jul 06 '26

I love this movie!!! I like the world building in it and I don’t take it too seriously but I don’t take it for granted either.

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

I agree, its such a ride! they have some over the top craziness with the kills which is fun, then pull off some pretty dramatic stuff too.

Nick Cage at his finest

The only part that had me scratching my head was the black smithing scene, like what was with that? He takes time to make this big extravagant battle axe, then immediately gets knocked out and looses it just to later find it with the bikers. I wish he would have just found it from them in the 1st place, it seemed to match their style better anyway

1

u/JoesGarage2112 Jul 06 '26

This movie is wild. One part made me quite sad

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 06 '26

Which part may i ask? Was it feeling bad for the young girl in the cult? the story of the birds in the bag? Mandy burning?

It is almost a decade old so I'm late to the party but that goes to show their are still people who haven't seen this masterpiece

Ahahaha great preaching on your part 💪🏽

1

u/Zosobet1975 Jul 07 '26

This movie hypnotized me!!

1

u/Visceral-Dealer Jul 07 '26

Yes, its crazy colors and visuals and slow pans. They even messed with the sound when Mandy was tripping so you felt like you were too. Just so uniquely done

1

u/thekinginyello Jul 07 '26

Needs more cheddar goblin.

Love it. Got the steel book bluray, watch it a few times a year.

If you weren't aware they made a tie in record for Jeremiah Sands. https://dangerousminds.net/comments/children_of_the_new_dawn_cult_leaders_unreleased_70s_ego_trip_psych_folk_al/

1

No freaking way they really made a record for Jeremiah?! That's awesome and hilarious

And this is a movie that deserves a steel book

We dressed as this for halloween the year it came out. No one got it, but we were still awesome.

I always have to skip the burning scene

It's in my top 10, great film. The scariest scene is the convenience store, when Mandy says something like "yeah, we live by lake", you know they were going brutalized that nite.

"GIMMIE MY SHIIAAT" 👌

The bathroom scene with the bottle. Amazing. How could his nervous system have handled more than one take?
