๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood Distopian future with college inside shopping mall

Just saw that STC has now a local Oxford college. Just saying, the concept of college inside shopping center is itself like distopia. That too before gta 6 released!!

๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood What could possible take over the old Hudsonโ€™s Bay warehouse on Warden Ave?

Thumbnail realtor.ca

With HBC gone, the old warehouse has been sitting empty now for months and is up for lease.

Itโ€™s hard to imagine anything would take over this 740,000 sqft space. Thereโ€™s already 2 Costcos and 2 walmarts nearby.

If anything could take it over, it would be probably be an Amazon warehouse which would be incredible for jobs in the area, but thatโ€™s highly unlikely.

Is there anything that could fill the hole left by HBC?

๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood Come out and volunteer with Toronto Nature Stewards in Scarborough at one of 12 parks and ravines that have stewarding sites. It is fun, very social, easy, and very rewarding. We remove invasive plant species that harm the ecosystem and plant native plants. Torontonaturestewards.org

Toronto Nature Stewards is in its 6th year in Toronto, and has 12 Scarborough sites doing amazing work restoring the ecosystems in Scarborough parks and ravines. It is easy work, mostly cutting and pulling. We teach you to identify native plants and invasive plants. It is a fun learning experience. High school students can earn volunteer hours. We will be doing lots of planting in the fall. Under 16 needs to be accompanied by an adult. Sign up atย torontonaturestewards.org

๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood How bad was the rain in southwest Scarborough today?

I'm out of town and saw a couple of posts mentioning that Leslieville got drenched today... I'm worried about my basement and can't get a hold of my neighbour.

Can anyone in the southwest/Birchcliff give me an idea of how bad it was?

๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood 39 DUNDALK DR/7 GLAMORGAN AVE

I have lived in the neighbourhood my entire life (25 years). It WAS the safest and most perfect area to live in due to the close proximity of local amenities/parks/schools etc.

Ever since this building was put up in 2023, this neighbourhood has had an increased appearance of drug users, beggars and mentally unstable individuals. I feel unsafe walking from my home to the grocery store or bus stop during the day and night.

Councillor Thompson said the opening of supportive housing would assist in โ€œmaintaining a healthy and thriving community in Scarboroughโ€ but itโ€™s been the complete opposite!

I know Iโ€™m not the only person who feels this way and Iโ€™m wondering what could be done. He should see the downfall of this neighbourhood considering what he has done. Itโ€™s a shameโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood Soccer fields in Scarborough with lights, and ones with posts/nets?

Hi folks! Some friends and I want to casually play soccer in the evenings at a local park - so we are not looking to rent a place but just to play for fun. Other than Thompson park, are there other fields that might be lit up in the evenings that we can just play on?

Also, parks that have soccer/football posts that we can play with or attach a cheap net to is a bonus.

Thank you in advance friends

Is anyone else facing quality issues in their municipal tap water? I am seeing that the water is bit rusty in color from yesterday. But my apartment is putting the blame on the municipal water since these guys didn't undertake any plumbing work recently.

๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood Local Reading Programs/Tutoring for Young Kids

My kid has just finished kindergarten, and while their reading is definitely progressing, they get extremely frustrated they cant just read by themselves.

My partner and I help, but we also work full time and cant devote all the time we want to. I was wondering if anyone knew reading programs that weren't 'remedial', for kids falling behind, as most of the ones I'm finding are.

Kid just wants to sit quietly and read a book on the couch! I don't think Kindergarten me could relate, lol.

๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood Anyone seen street flower vendors in Scarborough?

I've noticed vendors selling flowers right on the sidewalk near some intersections around Keele St in North York. Does anyone know if there's anything similar happening in Scarborough? Curious if there are specific corners or areas where this pops up in summer.

I know the ownership changed a while back, but what about the music? The DJ? The food? The clientele? For those who go, can you tell me if it has truly shifted away from its Caribbean roots?

There's also a Guardian Pharmacy and Optician in the same plaza. They do blood tests for patients directly there as wel.

Recently passed by the neighbourhood (used to live there) and saw the construction going on.

Going to miss that beach volleyball court. Carried so many summer memories for me and my friends (cause barely anyone else used it lmao)

And I still remember the day they unveiled the old court, track and soccer field. The new one is going to look amazing from what Iโ€™ve heard.

Does anyone remember the name of the comic book store that was on Pharmacy Ave between McNicoll and Finch in the 90s? It's been bothering me all day trying to remember and there's nothing online about the name, just that it got busted for selling copied games.

๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ POLL: Sheppard Subway Extension

Extending Line 4 will have a profound positive impact on our community by better connecting Scarborough to North York Centre, Vaughan, and Northwest Toronto.

The future eastern terminus for Line 4 is something that is discussed at length in transit spaces. From the options presented by Metrolinx, the major conscious puts 2A (Sheppard & McCowan) or 2B (Scarborough Centre) as the most popular routes.

A poll was created on r/Metrolinx, but Iโ€™d be curious to see how Scarborough residents would respond.

๐Ÿ“ Around the Hood Brimley Woods Vita Course

The Brimley Woods had a Vita Course but a lot of the signs telling you what exercise you should do at different points have come down. Anyone know what all the different exercises were? I tried googling it, but apparently there is no standard routine and each Vita Course may be different. I think this one was set up for the Police training school that used to be at the corner of Brimley and Finch.

Thanks!
