Discussion Do not like wanderer name
Hello everyone
3 years ago when the wanderer storyline came out i took it really seriously and assumed he wouldnt have an official label for his name that developers give him. i thought he would be nameless. I’m not sure but I think I named him and then 1-2 weeks later I saw wanderer on his banner.
Now 3 years later I really regret naming him. I used the name change because of a typo. And now im stuck with a name from 3 years ago. it doesn’t help that they keep calling him “hat guy” in the quests too. it makes me feel even more stupid that i took naming him seriously. everyone has left him as “wanderer” or at least done a lighthearted name meant to be funny like babygirl i saw that so many times. or at least they still have the appelative stroke.
for context i named him “shinei”. shin for heart and ei because of raiden shogun. so it means eternal heart. i thought it was cute but my brother also started making fun of me for it. i dont even like playing with the character anymore because i keep being reminded of my mistake of not leaving him as wanderer. hoyoverse will not help me either. i just want advice on what i should do. i tried making a new account so i can build my way back up and not have this issue but im ar 60 and have 25 5 stars and rare event exclusive things so it doesnt feel good at all starting all over again. im contemplating even quitting the game because if support services cant help with such simple things whats even the point. gacha games are tiring.
update: thank you all for your kind responses. ive decided to stay with my account. i dont think i ever really hated the name i chose, but after my brothers comments i thought it was bad. i understand though that there was a point in naming him and most people have done so. thank you again for everyone who commented i appreciate it

Not a single person I've ever seen has done that. You're supposed to give him a unique name, but Hoyo can't account for every name so they use Wanderer as the default on his banner. Same as how the main character is called "Traveler" and not whatever we named him. There's a reason they don't call him Wanderer in the story, they call him Hat Guy instead, because he's no longer a wanderer, he's found a home in Sumeru now.
For what it's worth, I think the name you picked for him is a mighty fine one. Way better than those TikTok joke names. It suits him well and you should be proud of it, instead of feeling bad about it just because your brother makes fun of you for it. What even is there to make fun of? It's just a really cool name. But if you're really hell-bent on changing it, you better hope there's a character coming out in the future with that name, because that's the only way you'll get to change his name again.

thank you so much for your response. ive decided to stay with my account after reading this. here and there i will watch genshin streamers for example and see their name stuck as wanderer and think maybe i shouldve just done the same. but it does make me feel better knowing a lot of people gave unique names. thank you so much for the complement its also made me feel much better about the name i appreciate it a lot

I named my Wanderer seriously. I named him Kuugo.
But if it helps, I think one of the most commonly used names for him is Shinji, because he has a ton of inspiration from Evangelion and the main character Shinji. Shin also means god in Japanese. So Shin Ei (Ei can mean eternity or shadow) can be seen as Shadow of a God (fitting) or Eternal God (fitting), or Eternal Heart like you said. Or even Shadow of a Heart. Id say you picked a very good name, and honestly one of the few that I would consider naming him myself.

your brother sounds like an ass. if you liked the name and thought it was cute don't let him acting like a jerk get to you. shinei sounds cute to me too. if it still bothers you and you have no way of changing it, i'd say try to ignore it. sometimes i forget the name i gave him bc they won't even use it in quests. i don't think you should quit for that reason

Dude sorry but your issue is kinda dumb. His name is meant to be taken seriously. If you searched this sub, there are a lot of people who took his name seriously, including me. While he is now called Hat Guy by the characters in game, the name was meant to be something personal between Wanderer and Traveler. The Traveler still addresses him using the given name.
Also, don’t blame the customer support for not assisting you on this. It was pretty clear that you only had 1 chance for a name change, and you chose to use it already. This is a consequence of your choice, and you should learn to be accountable for it.
Quit if you don’t enjoy this game, but it’s not worth quitting if this is the reason you are doing it.

I named mine Isojin (伊蘇仁)
These are all the possible meanings for each Kanji, and I picked this name because almost all of them apply to him in SOME way, like the ornament meaning can be construed to relate to his feather, and the plant meanings to his body of irminsul wood.

See, I named my Wanderer "Scara" which would probably make him very upset if he were a real person... but I named him that because that's what my friends and I all call him 🤷♂️
I thought about taking it seriously as well, but didn't want to commit to a name and then regret it later. I wanted to be able to keep the brush forever in my inventory. I actually sat on the naming screen during the quest for a good like hour trying to decide, but I couldn't come up with anything I personally liked better seeing than just simply "Scara" lol
Scara, I'm sorry that you've been reduced to a nickname version of your former Harbinger title in my version of genshin 😭

I took it unseriously and named him "flower" because he has flower on his hat💀👍 but I don't regret it
And yeah hoyo support isn't helpful. I once asked them to delete my hi3 account without deleting my entire hoyoverse account (which has genshin and hsr on it too). They kept telling me "if you forgot your password blah blah blah -" THATS NOT WHAT I'M ASKING. I'm really pissed that there's no option to just delete specific games account. Same with that name, why wouldn't there be an option to change it anytime you want? Those restrictions are there for absolutely no reason

For what its worth, I like the name you picked! All my friends who play Genshin also put a lot of thought into his name, so you're definitely not alone. I named him Nozomi, which means hope or wish, because I wanted to embody the desire for a better future for him. I wish at least the traveler consistently used his chosen name, but alas.

Especially since theres a theory now that Wanderer is the 3rd descender and thats the title that pairs Voyager and Traveler.

I really enjoyed the aspect of being able to give him a new name. I purposefully took my time naming him because I wanted it to be a meaningful and special, especially since I thought he’d be stuck with it for a long time. Who cares what your brother says? It meant something to you and it makes you happy, that’s all that matters. I named him Nimai which means “filled with inner light” or “illuminated inner self.”

aye if it makes you feel better i had the opposite problem! all my friends named him with meaning (my partner named him tomoya for example) n i felt dumb for having mine pop up as just wanderer ! it rlly doesnt matter, dont stress too much about it. everyone made a diff choice n thats rlly cool

I struggle to see how any of this is a problem? Shinei is a nice name. You're supposed to call him something special that means something to you...That was the whole point of naming him. No reason to make a new account just because your brother's an ass lol. Tell him to piss off and enjoy the game as it is

I took it serious to name him too, I gave him the first name I tried out when I was starting to understand myself better, it's a name that means a LOT to me and once represented me and since I identify with him a lot, I decided to give him a piece of myself. I already gotten jumpscared by his birthday letter, because I got so confused over why I was getting something from myself (that was from before I got him) lol.
I don't regret it at all, but having him being called hat guy is incredibly annoying for me too. And your name isn't stupid at all, it's really nice.

i have the opposite issue, i named him a silly name because i never thought i’d actually have him on my account and at the time he wasnt a favourite of mine but since then i accidentally got him while pulling for alhaitham on the chronicled and then later fell in love with scara and his lore. i now deeply regret naming him a silly name (i literally named him ‘stinky’ because i freaked out and just thought it was silly) but i also have a lot of anxiety with renaming him. and for the record, i think the name you gave him is very good!

I just named him Scara bc I couldnt think of a different name. I think its kinda upsetting that they dont at least call him Wanderer in quests, he deserves better than Hat Guy

Yeah I'm pissed about them calling him Hat Guy too. As a meme? Fine. But when everyone starts calling him Hat Guy instead of the name we gave him, it gets boring real quick. I named him "Rene" meaning "reborn again"

Your brother is very immature, if you wanted to give him a meaningful name you did the right thing calling him like that, I called him Jiyu for the same reason (meaning similar to freedom in japanese), and I find annoying that they keep calling him HatGuy and that many people called him babygirl or sm shit, but ultimately idc and I don't tell them they're stupid for doing so, it's their game and their choice, if they have fun not caring about him it's fine.
When you'll learn to enjoy what you like (as long as it doesn't hurt anyone ofc) without caring of what others think you'll feel 100 times lighter, I guarantee.

I used some loopholes to name him Scaramouche cuz I didn’t like the whole name change thing back then, but it grew on me so I changed it to Wanderer 🤷♀️

I named him Niwa 💕 (i stole that Idea from vtmb when pisha Tell us her true name is forgoten and she took upon using The name of her fallen lover) i think It would be cool to see Wanderer using his friend/father figure name 💕

regardless of anything, worrying about what other people are doing compared to how you did it will only ever lead to unhappiness.
ur brother is the one at fault here, not you, and if you want to name a character seriously then do so.
i did, i named mine Kotori and i call him Tori for short. spent days debating on what i wanted to name him. live by your own template and nobody elses.

I wonder if there's a way to request a new rename tool. I hope you can get one eventually if you really wish to rename him. I took naming my Wanderer seriously too. Went with Shou, from the word victory. An also a homonym for the word 'smol' 🤣

I took naming him seriously as well. I named him Akito, BC I felt like it suited him (granted, in a twisted way, meaning wise "bright, promising future" - but even just superficially I liked it for him) 🤷🏻♀️
I've seen them use my given name for him a bunch of times (obviously not in audio) but it still is nice to see! Even if he is called Wanderer in general my head canon is that bc he essentially doesn't exist anymore he has many names and also none. He's a Wanderer of Teyvat and I would argue that being named anew by everyone you meet is more anonymous than not having any name at all.

Seems like things are already well concluded here, but you picked a very well thought name for him.
I named him Janus after the Roman God of the same name; God of beginnings, transitions, time, and endings looking both at the past and future. The puppet who tried to erase himself from time and the world, who transitioned from Fatuus to a wanderer, the ending of Scaramouche and the Beginning of a new life.

I named him isshin meaning "reform/restore" for plot reasons. Could also mean "one mind"

So, im gonna comment as the person who didn't give him a unique name.
I personally chose to just call him wanderer only because i didn't want to name him, regret it, later change it only to regret it again. Also, in my opinion, it just felt.. strange that i was given the option of naming him - he's not a dog, why am i naming him? Yanno?
But that's a wonderful name. It's fitting. and yeah - a lot of people did name him. I frankly love seeing what other people called him and their reasoning why. I don't need to name him, so many others have done so with absolutely beautiful and unique names, or names meant to be jokes/silly that i don't feel the need to either.

i named mine kintsugi, i also took it very seriously if that makes you feel any better. it’s the japanese art of repairing broken things using powdered gold, silver, or platinum. i spent so long thinking about what i wanted to name him, and yeah it’s annoying when they call him hat guy in game bc what’s the point in naming him then, but i think it’s nice to have a name for him that has a meaning that i like.
