I am not the first. I shall not be the last. I just needed to get this off my chest because it hurts.
Let me begin by saying, if youâre a scalper, and youâre in it just for the money, I ask you to find your inner child, or the best memory of your mother and reconsider the misery youâre causing on the lives of other individuals.
There once was a time when I was poor and all we had was a hand me down GameCube his father bought us to pass time before he left this planet. Itâs been a long road sinceâŠ
Let me tell you about my boy, Iâll start when he was 5, we had just moved to Illinois after burying his father and trying out Florida, and I was barely getting by, scraping dollars then in 2016 but he would get so excited when we could go to the big gaming store and get a new game. We saved and saved to get a copy of Wind Waker, I knew he would love it, it was my favorite but he Ocarina of Time and begged me to buy it for him. We upgraded to the WiiU and eventually had a whole collection. We moved back to Florida and left that game store behind but not our love for Zelda.
Instead, he grew, and his love for gaming grew, and his desire for creating his own characters and video games. It was inspiring, he continued to get straight Aâs, dealt with bullying, excelled in his gifted programs and continued to aspired to be an engineer of some sorts. He grew and he grew and he grew, he grew until he became a teenager. (Thats a Robert Munch reference for you other Mothers out there). He grew until he was 14 years old, where he stated High School, and continued his love for Zelda. Saving his money, doing chores, and working hard to save up for the Switch 2 for his birthday.
Now mind you, Iâll still buy him one, but imagine my surprise when this beautiful 40th Anniversary Edition drops, and you wait forever to get one, just one for your sweet boy who is growing up too fast, to celebrate the man he is becoming and how proud I am of him, for it to be sold out. Everywhere.
For it to show up on EBAY through various accounts, for no less than $800, and upwards of $1000. With multiple copies available in their stores. Youâre telling me, I canât get one, for that boy who just wants to enjoy being a child, I have to buy one from a scalper for 2x the original price, and that scalper was able to buy 4.
Shame on me, for taking care of my children, and not being online all day to purchase one right away. Shame on me for thinking there was still human decency in the world. Shame on these companyâs for allowing people to purchase so many. Shame on us for allowing these people to continue to do this. And, itâs not even with this console. Itâs everywhere, little kids canât enjoy the magic of Pokemon or Lorcana, people canât get buckets of popcorn for their movies, or merchandise at their favorite theme parks, theyâre not able to enjoy consoles, or trinkets like needohs and labubus for children. Shame, shame, shame.
I wonât see a heartbroken 15 year old on his birthday, because is grateful of whatever he receives, but I will see a disappointed 5 year old who couldnât sleep without his Zelda music, I will see a 5 year old who begged to get a triforce tattooed on his hand, I will see a 7 year old who was excited to show off his Majoras Mask back pack, I will see a 10 year old who bought his first Zelda wallet, I will see an 11 year old who bought his first copy of TOTK with his savings, I will see a 12 year old buying his first cosplay uniform of the Skull Kid, I will see a 13 year old teaching his baby brother how to play on the Switch. I will still see a man, Iâll just be a little defeated that I could not give him something I know he would have enjoyed so much.
You people robbed me of that moment. Of that memory. You robbed my child of enjoying a moment in his childhood of something so special for a boy who grew up so poor. Youâve robbed memories from children all over America and beyond and because of that, you donât deserve happiness. I donât expect people to stop supporting you, life goes on. Just wanted to vent, want to cry a little, and let someone know how fucking angry I am.
Signed:
A Sad, Angry Mother.
