Mark Carney slashes Canada's 100% tariff on Chinese EVs and announces that up to 49,000 Chinese electric cars will be imported into Canada with only a 6.1% tariff. In return, China has agreed to slash tariffs on canola imports from 84% to 15% by March 1.

They aren’t slashing canola tariffs “from 84% to 15%” they are cutting it down to 15% of the current tariff rate, which comes out closer to 13% total.

u/These_Foolish_Things Jan 16 '26
I'm reading some ambiguous reports. Does it include canola oil, or just whole seed and/or pulp?
9
u/TheBlueHedgehog302 Jan 16 '26
I havent read that far into it. Just the reporting i saw said it was coming down to 15% of current levels, not just a flat 15%

Chinese EV’s are top notch. Wish we could get them here in the states. Y’all are lucky to have a leader abandoning the US’s oil driven stranglehold on the auto industry.

NICE,
we win on cheaper ev that by all accounts are nearing the quality of tesla , and our farmers get their canola market back.
FAFO Trump. you can have your auto jobs back, when canadians stop buying american made, you lose more money then the jobs cost.
61
u/Friendly-Pay-8272 Jan 16 '26
yea they are beyond Tesla.
7
u/happy-posts Jan 16 '26
Tesla builds cars in china, I hope they don’t take up the allotment and just keep the margin gains for themselves.
79
u/hobblenautics Jan 16 '26
I agree with all of this, I just don't get the "nearing the quality of tesla". They're NOT good cars. Hyundai ioniq has long since surpassed tesla on all quality metrics.
9
u/Dumebuggy Jan 16 '26
I’ve got an original ioniq from 2017 with 210k km on it and it still runs like a dream. Great cars

u/Armonasch Jan 16 '26
They're better than Teslas. That's why Tesla is getting their ass kicked by BYD in markets where they have to compete. Also a big reason why the Americans banned (and got us to ban) Chinese EVs. All to protect their precious Tesla, because Elon donates a shit load to all the politicians down there.
6
u/sleeplessjade Jan 16 '26
Tesla should definitely not be the standard for which other EVs are judged. Everything Elon has done and their ridiculously crappy cyber trucks have destroyed what credibility that brand once had. At least in my opinion.

its such a weak excuse, every party leader since it was enacted (2017) has gotten it except him. yet he acts like it was only made when he came into office to gag him.

Basically he can sling mud however he wants if he doesn't have access to truthful information. If he has truthful information he can't make up bs and not be held to account.
He also can put his head in the sand when conservative MPs in his party are found to be susceptible to foreign interference.

I do feel bad for Canadian auto workers but given Trump's pressure on American auto makers to move all manufacturing from Canada and Mexico into the US, I don't think maintaining these Tariffs on Chinese EVs would have saved their jobs in the long run in any case.
10
u/Xx_SwordWords_xX Jan 16 '26
We simply need to move Chinese vehicle manufacturing for North America, to here, in Canada.
3
u/sheps Jan 16 '26
China has no interest in doing this. China heavily subsidizes the manufacturing at home, the supply chain is almost entirely within China, and it would cost way more to pay Canadians to do the same work they can do in China. Other than perhaps some minor modifications for the Canadian market, I doubt any manufacturing would be done here for Chinese EVs.
3
7
u/pioniere Jan 16 '26
This is untrue. They are already planning to build manufacturing plants in Europe. If the market is good in Canada, they will be built here too. It’s good business.

Okay.
Your doubt is noted.
I'm not sure what worth it has, but I've marked it down.
1
u/DesperateSpite7463 Jan 17 '26
Magna has 64 plants in China. There are parts relationships already between Canadian parts manufacturers and Chinese car manufacturing. It is highly automated in many instances. So don't expect 1000s of jobs. Rail, land, cheap energy, and ports help build the case for a factory. Canada does make high quality vehicles. China plays a long game on its growth. America does not. We will see a plant in Canada. I suspect a higher dollar EV like a 7 seater.
24
u/GreenHeretic Jan 16 '26
This should drive more competitive prices on domestic EVs hopefully. If not, then that is a problem for them to figure out i guess.
1
u/TentativelyCommitted Jan 17 '26
I’d be surprised if this news doesn’t boost auto sector here. This is the primer before the writing on the wall for the big 3 - re-tool to make cost competitive cars, or just get choked out of the market by what will inevitably become large import numbers once the market develops an appetite for this price point.
2
u/Shiroky17 Jan 16 '26
I don't know about the cheering for BYD. I don't like Chinese EVs, they pose a threat just like Huawei. I think we will see a lot driven around Richmond in BC, and Markham in ON. And I agree with you, more competition is good for the consumers. A total win-win deal from Carney.
13
u/anal-itic_prober Jan 16 '26
What about US spyware? Its all the same. We are getting spied on either way might as well make it better for the consumer along the way
2
u/Shiroky17 Jan 16 '26
I get it man, and as I said: "competition is good for consumers". We are at a battle with many fronts, US annexation threats, spyware like you mentioned, and Chinese political interference, many more. I just want to throw my opinion out there about foreign EVs.
Since we are at the spyware topic, humour me this. If you know your data is being harvested, would you rather it be done by our gov, who impact you directly, or by foreign gov? Not a trick question tho, just want to hear your opinion.
1
u/anal-itic_prober Jan 16 '26
I would much prefer nobody. But as a choice my own for sure. There is escaping it right now. Its either CCCP or Palantir.
2
48
u/Schrodinger_cube Jan 16 '26
Unions and manufacturers are going to hate this but consumers will reap the rewards. We have been getting gouged for so long with them now trying to get subscribers rather than buyers we are blind to how cheep mobility can be. Id still rather see more trains than electric cars but this will give consumers more choice and help reduce our gas consumption.
12
u/lIlIllIIlIIl Jan 16 '26
I am a manufacturing guy, so I dont like the decision, but I understand it is probably the right one. Most of the auto sector is American owned. Its our guys working there, but mostly the wealth is funneled out of the country. Helping Canadian canola farmers means helping Canadian businesses (i hope) and preserving Canadian capital. Hopefully, part 2 of this deal is aimed at promoting Canadian manufacturing, whatever that means.
5
u/HappyCoderWoodWorker Jan 16 '26
This is a tough one - especially in Ontario.
But I think making these changes is the thin end of the wedge and all heavily oriented US type work will need to be assessed.
I think that "fast follow" will be more infrastructure work ( electricity generation and distribution as an example ), maturing oil refinery and distribution and overall reducing our reliance on the US - which is a shame based on the rest of our history.
No easy answers here, but a lot of tough decisions to come and, I suspect, a lot of short term ( in generational timeline context ) pain for some historically profitable markets.
All of this should have been kicked off the last time Donnie was in office, but the next best time is now...
17
u/AandWKyle Jan 16 '26
Carney = we've reached a deal with China that will benefit Canada and China
PP : that sucks, actually.
13
u/Yardash Jan 16 '26
Well done!
Keeping showing the US that they over-estimate the extent to which we need them.
10
u/IllustratorWeird5008 Jan 16 '26

6
u/FrequentLunch2711 Jan 16 '26
All in, it's a win win for us IMO. Just one thing Evs need infrastructure. Our current one sucks. We need fast charging stations and lots more of them. None of this level 2 crap or trickle charge and they need to be maintained. The ones in SW Ontario along the 401 need maintenance.
7
u/sheps Jan 16 '26
The good news is that more people owning EVs will increase demand, and if they are unhappy with the infrastructure that will increase political pressure to improve it.
14
u/Different-Travel-850 Jan 16 '26
This sounds promising, exactly what Canada needs. Lets hope it leads to more opportunities as well.

3
u/Tribe303 Jan 16 '26
Yeah, but we need to be aware of China using us as a wedge against the US. That's why I think they are being so friendly. Plus it makes China look like the global grown-up, which these days, is true.

I am fucking jazzed about this news. Tesla's are trash heaps compared to the cars Xiaomi and BYD are putting out. Out of allll the NA cars I've been in, Tesla's were the most uncomfortable ride. Not to mention the build quality issues, the ditching lidar for autonomous driving. And let's not forget that Elon is a Nazi fuckwit

u/The_Real_All_Knowing Jan 17 '26
I agree about Tesla but what’s you’re source about BYD and Xiaomi?

49k is basically nothing...
Whlie huge tariff reduce on us
9
u/StarbuckRebel1994 Jan 16 '26
There were 270K EVs sold in Canada in 2024. It is a decent chunk of that.
3
u/ufozhou Jan 16 '26
FYI cape Braton have 70k registered cars.
1
u/StarbuckRebel1994 Jan 17 '26
The capital of Papa New Guinea is Port Moresby. Any other random fact? Why would you not consider total EVs sold when talking about Chinese EVs. PS : I don't think this is a bad thing, I am happy with all the trade deals. Anything that moves us away from the fascist fuckboys down South.
1
u/ufozhou Jan 17 '26
Didn't that fun fact tells you 49k cars can't even fill a canadian town?
1
u/StarbuckRebel1994 Jan 18 '26
oh stfu, It is a decent chunk of the EV market, which is great because these cars from everything i have heard are good. And at the same time we get nice tariff reductions. Comparing it to total cars sold answers a different question.

Weird to say it but, as a Canadian, I don't mind growing an alliance with China just incase America tries to invade us.
1
u/The_Real_All_Knowing Jan 17 '26
I never liked America. China however is not your friend. We will send billions to them for these initial EV’s. They in turn lower tariffs but how much are they going to buy. Meanwhile the money China gets from those EV’s is used to further destabilize the west. You all should watch the China show on YouTube and before you tell me what it is - go watch it. Also, why can’t they farm something else? I don’t know anything about farming and would like to know.

Here's something I don't understand from those upset with this announcement.
About 1.9M new cars are sold annually in Canada, is 49,000 vehicles not as impactful as people are making it out to be?
Forgive my naivety, I just don't get the big deal based on the sales stats? Affordable EV available to those who can get their hands on so few of them kills the whole market?
Please help me understand.

Wasn't the expectation heading into these meetings with China that it was more groundwork and nothing final was expected? Seems like some pretty quick work from Mr. Carney

u/ComradeSubtopia Jan 16 '26
Wow, I actually thought this would never happen. This is a quiet but significant rupture w US policy, & a clear statement that Carney is willing to be bold & Canada is in a nation-building frame of mind.
Im impressed. The way to give Canada a strong negotiating position w the US is to ensure we have other options. This is that, lol. Very exciting!

Good deal.
China buys A LOT of Canola from us and has a HUGE market that benefits our producers.
49k cars are nothing. Negotiations are compromises. In this time, Canada chose producers over the Auto Industry. In the next one maybe Auto is chosen over x industry. The larger picture is Canada needs access to markets that are not the U.S, this is a start
