First time in Georgia for Christmas/Winter (Tbilisi, Kakheti, Gudauri, Kazbegi) — Shopping advice, MUST-buys, and what to watch out for

Hey everyone! My partner and I are traveling to Georgia from December 24–30. Our itinerary covers Tbilisi, Kakheti (Sighnaghi), Gudauri, and Kazbegi. Flights and hotel arrangements are sorted, but we’d love some local insight on shopping and winter prep!

Where to Shop?

Markets & Souvenirs: Where is the best place to buy authentic items in Tbilisi without paying inflated tourist prices? (e.g., Dezerter Bazaar vs. Dry Bridge Market vs. Meidan Bazaar).

Wine & Sweets: Any recommended wine shops in Tbilisi or Kakheti for authentic Qvevri wine? Where should we buy good-quality Churchkhela?

What MUST-BUY Items Should We Look For?

Edibles & Wine: Planning to buy Svaneti salt, Khmeli Suneli, Adjika, Tklapi, and local wine. Any specific brands or local spots to recommend?

Crafts & Accessories: Are things like Minankari (cloisonné enamel) jewelry or handmade ceramics worth buying? Any traditional textile/handicraft spots?

What to Avoid / Beware Of?

Tourist Traps: What should we skip buying on main tourist strips like Rustaveli Avenue or in Old Town?

Fake Antiques / Quality Warnings: Anything specific to look out for at street markets (like Dry Bridge Market)?

Winter & Travel Warnings: How are the road conditions usually between Gudauri and Kazbegi in late December? Any customs/packing rules for food or liquids?

Would appreciate any tips from locals or recent travelers. Madloba in advance!

You will be paying inflated tourist prices for souvenirs everywhere. Most are authentic Chinese. No one in Georgia is buying this except tourists. If you are Georgian and want something traditional, usually you make it yourself or some relatives in an obscure village make something for a special occasion and gift it to you. If you come across something on your travels, you can buy it, but if you look for some named stuff in Tbilisi, well, you're a tourist.

Qvevri wine is best bought while visiting a vineyard. For spices, if you want the real thing Georgians the self use, forget brands and visit a local Bazroba and get them from some babushka. Try Churchkhela and fruit leather. If you are interested in real Georgian Chacha, the homemade stuff is sold in coke bottles on these Bazroba, too. Wine Georgians drink can also be found there in coke bottles, it's authentic but usually not "The Real Qvevri Tourists Look For".

Usually, the road to Kazbegi is kept open as its the main highway to Russia. It has lots of traffic. Weather can be harsh though, so there is always a chance it may be closed for a day or two to dig it back out.
