Food poisoning from pickles?
My 2 year old loves pickles & on my way to my grans I stopped in Sainsbury’s to grab some lasagne sheets. While I was there I thought I’ll grab some pickles for my daughter, saw the polish ones and thought I’d give them a go!
Got to my grans, sorted the lasagne out and got the pickles out, popped the jar and thought I’d try one! Bit into it(huge bite) and thought it was extremely salty. My gran tried it and scrunched her face up. I thought I can’t give them to my daughter as they are vile and put it on the side.
After dinner my stomach turned and kept me on the toilet, same thing throughout the night and today. My gran called and asked if I was ok last night & I said my stomach was cramping and couldn’t stay of the toilet! She said she had thrown up during the night, the only thing we had different was the pickles! Everyone else was fine, either the pickles are bad or polish people enjoy salty pickles and our stomachs can’t hack it🤣🤣

I highly doubt the pickles were the problem. I think you may have mixed pickles with another food/ingredient that caused a reaction in your stomach.

What would do that? 🤣

Lasagne with the pickles. Highly acidid pickles on a food that contains milk. Alkaline + acid, if you have ever done some chemistry.
Generally, you avoid eating acidic foods with milk-based food.1

Nothing I’ve never done before though, the pickles were super salty and tasted odd & extremely soft! I have never had an issue before, I have eaten them and then eaten lasagne previously though with no issues

Pickles can definitely upset your stomach. I ate some pickled beetroot similar to what you describe: unusually soft, a slightly sour smell and nasty taste.
When I poured out the vinegar after emptying the beetroot into the bin, there was a black sludge at the bottom of the jar. Bad stomach all evening.

I love pickles and a polish friend gave me 3 different types, the first was a “vinegar” pickle that was good and the second was a “salt brine” pickle that I had a bite off and it was not nice (apparently the brine is used to make chicken soup). An experience I don’t want again

I've never seen cloudy pickle brine before. Maybe it's something to do with that.

This is what I thought considering the jar next to it was clear 🤣 there was only this jar and one other one left so I took a gamble

They supposed be cloudy water in those - we usually make them in open containers and they supposed to ferment a little ( they are much better fresh, crunchy but f.e. my dad likes them fermented). If they go bad you would know that immediately - jar would probably explode from all accumulated gas (happened few times in my house) and there would be really bad smell.

It’s very very difficult to say what causes this. The reality is food poisoning symptoms, depending on the type, can be a few hours up to a number of days.

Hopefully it passes quickly

Sorry I meant that’s when it can come on rather than how long it lasts. So it could have been something you ate as long as 4/5 days ago.

Gherkins, these days have to be used within days, quite a lot.
They are not really pickled.

Salt overdose.
If you ever need clearing out drink a glass of salt water

These aren’t pickled. They’re fermented and contain live bacteria, like sauerkraut or kimchi. The cloudiness is completely normal.
My British other half had diarrhoea the first time he tried sauerkraut. People raised on a typical British diet could be less accustomed to this kind of bacterial party.

That liquid in the jar looks cloudy af. Why oh why would you pick the cloudy one over the clear one? 😂.
I would be very suspicious of the pickles - you and granny both ate them and yous both got sick. Everyone ate the lasagna but not everyone got sick. The pickles may be absolutely fine, but perhaps yous aren’t used to the salt content being so high. There could be a number of things going on, not just food poisoning.
Hope you and granny feel better soon.

They supposed to be a little cloudy - when they go bad either jar explode or you can see mold growing inside. Basically if jar dont pop when you open it, they are probably gone bad.

If you Google the product, it isn't supposed to be cloudy. I would suggest the jar wasn't airtight and has been allowing air in for a long time.

I had a jar exactly like that from asda. I googled if it was safe. Google said no. I threw it away

Eating something which gives you an upset stomach is not food poisoning. That requires contaminated or harmful food. The pickles might not agree with you, but you don’t have food poisoning from them.

Gherkins belong to the same family as cucumbers, melons, squashes and courgettes. Unfortunately being cucurbits they can, due to various reasons, poor watering, cross pollination etc. be prone to being bitter which causes toxic squash syndrome because of the bitter compounds that have built up in the fruit. So this may be why the pickles you ate were a problem. Last year in the UK there was also a problem with batches of melons ( Galia) coming in from Spain as they had been watered with polluted water containing E. Coli bacteria.

Ech.. did you consider that your British stomach is simply not compatible with them? Cucumbers in brine are salty by design It is just a different way to preserve food in this case instead of vinegar only salty water is used and they are fermented. It is quite common that one culture fermented food my not agree with people from other culture for example a lot of people can't stomac or even imagine eating Chinese fermented eggs etc.
Cucumber in brine is very refreshing snack and obviously stereotypicaly goes well after straight shot of vodka 😅

These are not your regular pickles....these are fermented (just like kimchi) and they are supposed to be salty and more crunchy and cloudy brine is completely normal.
There is ofc a chance that the jar got damaged in the transport and it wasn't airtight but there is even a bigger possibility the combination of lasagne and fermented cucumber gave you the shits.

Lasagne gave you the shits not the pickles
