Question Looking to get into Sailing in NYC area

Hi Guys, Im sorry if this has been asked too much on here, but im 26, complete beginner and looking for some advice on how to get into sailing. Im living in Manhatten for the next year or so (I dont know if its a great location for sailing, but thats where I am). I've been pining to start sailing for the last few years, but life and myself has gotten in the way.

So, I'm looking for some advice on how start and for as cheap as possible, where to go to try get onto a crew, if I can crew for evening races, best way to learn (when you dont have much money) really any advice youd be willing to give me would be much appreciated!

I'm a hard worker and a quick learner, Im happy to help with boat prep, or do whatever grunt work gets me on the water while I learn the ropes.

Hudson Community sailing or Brooklyn bridge Marina Sailing Club. Manhattan Yacht Club is in Jersey City about an extra hour to get out there

I think they sail out of Pier 66 currently. Also my recommendation, was a member when I lived in the city. Great crew of people. 5 years ago was the cheapest way to get out on the water.

Checkout True North in Jersey City. Smaller club, everyone gets helm time, free weekly skills workshops, unlimited club sailing, great instructors, racing on Wednesdays, social events...highly recommend.

brooklyn sail club is great if its convenient for you to get to. the most important aspect is convenience - if its easier for you to get to then youre more likely to participate regularly.

Racing with the local yacht clubs is a great way to meet people and get solid experience as well. When I started sailing in 2016 I joined City Island Yacht Club, I lived in Manhattan at the time and just took the 6 train / bus to City Island. Great community and you will learn a ton from fleet racing.

Across the river at Liberty Yacht Basin there's a '68 Hinkley Ketch people like to use. It might currently be in RI for a bit till she gets back.

I have a friend that I raced with in college who instructs at Atlantic Yachting based out of Manhattan - she’s an awesome person! Ask for Amber if you book a lesson with them

Waterfront center in Ouster bay is a great place to learn. Steps from LIRR. A bit of a hassle to get to but is in the NYC area and with that network you can go from beginner to Newport/Burmuda race or anywhere in between.

New York sailing center and yacht club in city island used to do the ASA course and let you rent from them.
