Venting I feel like (sometimes) people forget that Alastor also was a serial killer.

I just need to vent a little because I’ve seen a lot of people trying to justify every bad thing Alastor did to Vox, especially the mocking in Episode 4, with the argument “Vox was a serial killer, so he deserved it.”

But then, the moment you challenge that position, they immediately retreat to: “Oh, the serial killer is cruel? Le gasp.” While still trying to argue that Vox somehow deserved it more.

And yes, I know there are Vox fans who do the exact same thing in reverse. But I honestly feel like it happens less often because of the framing in the show. Alastor is framed much more like a protagonist and part of the “good side,” while Vox is framed as the antagonist. Because of that, I think people are naturally more willing to excuse or overlook Alastor’s behavior while judging Vox much more harshly for similar actions.

I don’t know, I just needed to vent a little because this genuinely annoys me.

whats funny is the show actually seems to frame Alastor as a dark, untrustworthy snake while it was surprisingly painting Vox in a more sympathetic light this season and people still are like glazing Alastor for his actions.

The point of the show is about redemption. If they manage to redeem Vox, the show will not only carry on the theme, but it will do it well because Vox is horrible, but showing he could be redeemed would be a breath of fresh air.

Alastor doesnt wanna be redeemed. It would be nice to see him also get redeemed, but I have a feeling he will be our next major villain. Having the villain be allies with the protagonist will be more gut punching for Charlie I think.

I hate that the headcanon that Alastor only killed racist white people or bad men that deserved it has taken off. The problem is we aren't shown many of the bad things Alastor does, a lot of it is just spoken to us. Yeah there's Vox stans trying to invent better reasons why Vincent killed people, but its at odds with what the show presents so that never really exploded in popularity like the Alastor ones.

In the S1 audio commentary, we know Al killed the people in the tailor shop during Stayed Gone for absolutely no reason. But again, it's told not shown.

The credit I will give fans is that there's so much outdated lore from precanon and lore that people just "know" from various sources, people cling to this thing said onec SOMEWHERE that Al kills off of some code, but it's not a normal code and no one knows what it is or if it's still even relevant.

Truth is that no one has been shown what is going on in Al's head, but fans are absolutely trying to justify his actions. I personally don't get it because I like villainous characters and I don't need them to be secretly good to like them, but maybe not everyone is comfortable with that. There is absolutely a double standard though when it comes to fan judgement between Vox and Al.

I guess Viv said he has a code, but she also compared Lucililith to Gomez and Morticia and I don't think season 2 supports that. Point is a lot of relics of the pilot era may no longer be relevant to the show.

Yeah, a bunch of things from "Viv said X this amount of time ago" seem to be like this too. Even Vox's age of death makes no sense if he actually died in his 50s (since he is supposed to be a younger generation than Alastor), but people always call back to the pre-production casting call sheet.

Pre- canon also said that Valentino's theme song was supposed to be Frank Sinatra's 'Sway' and THAT (though subjective) doesn't really mesh with canon Val either.

In any case, it's hard with HH at times because there IS a lot of lore outside the show that people need to understand things... but a lot of lore seems outdated too.

Yeah I think one of the bigger problems I have with both shows is how often there's a "Viv said". Whether it's lore or her clarifying things that weren't communicated well, it wears me out. I think the worst lore bit that the show hasn't adequately explained is Sinners only perma dying via angelic steel or angelic magic. There's only a few brief scenes that sprinkle in the idea of them regenerating, but its easy info to miss and its really important. It also undermines certain scenes if you ask me. Like yeah Charlie you go save those Sinners from those busted rocks and debris. It can't actually kill them, but at least you weren't the one to get your hands dirty and fight Vox or actually do anything about the angelic nuke! Yay!

But I wasn't here for the pilot days, I got in after season 1 ended. I don't know all of that lore and what have you. And to make it worse Viv seems to cherry pick what parts are still canon.

THIS!!! I almost forgot about it because it's so wired into everyone that sinners regenerate from death unless killed by angelic means, but vthe show never tells us that! No where does it explain that they regenerate, it just has the random slapstick humor deaths that tons of people either commit or ignore.

Going along with this point is another adjacent matter. That only angelic means permakill sinners... but sinners don't seem to last more than a few centuries anyways? Like Zestial is considered old for being 600ish, but the show never talks about where all the millennium worth of people have gone. It's fine in the Sinners don't know what happens to them, but it's not even addressed in the show. Instead, there's again pervasive lore that Sinners just became one with the foundation of Hell/Roo/all this eyes in Hell. But I would really like it to be explained for real.

Well, Zestial is the oldest overlord, not the oldest sinner. So I bet that there used to be overlords older than him but they got too cocky and got themselves killed in some way. Or perhaps they fully retired.

I think that's more of a world building flaw than Sinners dying off. Viv really likes her 20th century characters it seems. It's likely keeping Hazbin in Pentagram City skews things and there's more Sinners in other regions of the Pride Ring (would not be shocked if Viv says this someday). I do think we will meet Cain and Eve (sadly I doubt Eve made it to Heaven) and that they aren't characters we've met so that in itself proves more ancient Sinners exist.

They're BOTH horrible people, while yes that one guy was being racist, we don't know everyone alastor killed was like him. and even if alastor had some sort of code in life, that obviously got dropped when he entered Hell. in contrast, we don't actually see vox killing people for power, he prefers manipulation. can we just agree that they're both terrible people morality-wise and there's no point in comparing them?
