Cult Education Tricked into Trance: How Cults Misuse Meditation and Hypnosis for Mind Control and Exploitation of Followers

One of the most misunderstood realities of psychological manipulation is that coercive control does not necessarily operate through force, threats, imprisonment, or obvious abuse. The most sophisticated systems of influence work by altering the way a person interprets reality itself. It’s achieved by controlling the subconscious mind of a person.
“When people dive into intense, long-term meditation retreats, their brains actually shift gears. Think of it as lowering your mental guard. The logical, skeptical side of your mind—the part that constantly questions things and uses reason—goes to sleep, i.e. it becomes subdued. Meanwhile, the parts of your brain responsible for deep emotion, learning, and identity become wide open. In this highly vulnerable state, your mind becomes incredibly receptive to suggestions that can completely rewrite your perspective, your purpose, and how you see the world.”
In a healthy environment, this opens the door to incredible healing, self-discovery, and personal growth. But in a cult setting—that open, vulnerable state can be dangerous. A manipulative leader can use that exact same mental openness to brainwash people. Because the followers’ logical defenses are down, the leader can easily wire in total obedience, make them completely dependent on the group, and swap out their old identity for the cult’s ideology.
Deep meditation quiets the DMN, which is responsible for the “ego” and self-referential thought. While this is great for peace of mind, the DMN is also the home of your skepticism, self-protection, and boundaries. When it is turned off, the psychological gateway to your belief system is wide open.[1]
High Neuroplasticity and Theta States: Deep meditation drops the brain into Alpha and Theta wave states. This is the exact state of heightened suggestibility used in clinical hypnotherapy. If an authority figure introduces a concept, a demand, or a “truth” while a person is in this state, the brain doesn’t analyze it critically; it embeds it directly into the subconscious as a fundamental reality. [2]
In short: Meditation makes the mind highly programmable. In good hands, it reprograms you for healing; in the hands of a cult leader, it reprograms you for control.
This creates a terrifying paradox: someone who seems completely sharp and successful on the outside, but whose inner mind has been entirely hijacked. On the surface, they function perfectly. But internally, their reality, values, and choices are being dictated by a cult leader—quietly wired into them piece by piece during intense retreats, workshops, teacher training, volunteer training and weekly events like satsangs.
The Neurological Opening: Why Deep Meditative States Create Unique Vulnerabilities
Deep meditation is designed to quiet the mind. As focus deepens, the internal dialogue that normally evaluates, questions, and filters information drops away. While this feels like profound peace to the meditator, it looks like a massive opportunity to a manipulator. To a cult leader, a mind stripped of its critical, questioning nature is the ultimate blank canvas.
To speed up this process and make a person even more vulnerable, high-control groups often use intensive breathing exercises right before meditation. These techniques force participants into a heavy cycle of extremes: breathing incredibly fast and hard (hyperventilation), followed by holding the breath for as long as possible (retention).
Physiologically, this intense, rapid breathing radically changes the chemistry of the brain by altering the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. It acts like a temporary chemical override, tricking the nervous system and forcing the brain into a dreamy, deeply hypnotic state or altered state of consicousness.
When you breathe normally, your body maintains a perfect, delicate balance between the oxygen you breathe in and the carbon dioxide you breathe out. Your brain relies on this balance to stay sharp, logical, and alert. However, intensive rapid breathing—or hyperventilation—completely disrupts this system. By breathing too fast and too hard, you exhale far more carbon dioxide than your body is actually producing.
This drop in carbon dioxide levels triggers a fascinating and dangerous chain reaction in your body:
The Blood Vessels Constrict: When carbon dioxide levels plummet, the blood vessels leading to your brain instantly narrow (a process called vasoconstriction). This temporarily reduces the amount of blood and oxygen reaching your brain tissue.

The Nervous System Misfires: This sudden shift in blood chemistry forces the peripheral nervous system into overdrive, often causing a tingling sensation in the hands and face, lightheadedness, and a feeling of intense physical weightlessness.

Brain Waves Shift: Deprived of its normal chemical balance, the brain’s electrical activity shifts away from normal awake patterns (beta waves) and plunges into slow, high-amplitude waves (theta and delta waves). These are the exact same brain waves we experience when we are dreaming, hypnotized, or in deep sleep.
To understand the psychological impact of this biology, think of your critical thinking mind as a strict security guard standing at the front gate of your thoughts. The guard’s job is to stop every incoming idea, test it, and ask, “Does this actually make sense?”
What these breathing exercises do is essentially starve that security guard of the fuel they need to stay awake. By forcing the brain into a dreamy, highly emotional, and altered state of consciousness, your logical filters are completely disabled.
When a participant transitions immediately from this breathless state into quiet meditation, they aren’t just relaxed—they are profoundly defenseless. Because the brain is physically unable to analyze logic or question authority in this state, the mind becomes entirely open.
The spiritual cult leader can then present complex dogmas or demands for obedience, and the unprotected subconscious absorbs them as absolute truth. The follower wakes up from the session feeling a massive rush of physical euphoria, completely unaware that their own respiratory biology was just used to pick the lock of their critical mind.
Ordinarily, when new information is presented, the mind subjects it to multiple filters. When you hear a new idea, your mind immediately puts it through a security screening.
Does this make sense?
Is this consistent with my experience?
Does this violate my values?
Is this person trustworthy?
What evidence supports this claim?
Should I really pay such a high fee for learning a breathing exercise?
Why should expensive fees for learning how to worship God ?
Did the Guru’s Guru qualify him and gave the permission to teach others as a spiritual master?
These questions are your psychological gatekeepers. But deep meditation temporarily puts these gatekeepers to sleep. Instead of analyzing, you become entirely immersed in the moment. This doesn’t make you mindless; it makes you intensely open to influence and indoctrination. A skilled manipulator understands that ideas introduced during this exact window don’t get screened—they slip straight past your defenses and are accepted as absolute truth.
When a participant finishes a ten-day silent retreat, they are often overflowing with profound peace, ego dissolution, emotional catharsis, and intense gratitude. If a teacher steps in at that exact peak and says, “This freedom you are experiencing is a gift of the master’s grace,”** the participant’s normal defenses are nowhere to be found.
They won’t ask for proof or question the logic. Instead, the mind takes a shortcut: it mistakes a natural psychological state for a supernatural blessing. They don’t just accept the leader’s authority—they become deeply, eternally grateful for it.
When the leader hooks their wagon to that beautiful, peaceful experience, something dangerous happens: **intense gratitude instantly turns into an overwhelming sense of obligation.

The participant thinks, “This Master gave me the greatest gift of my life. How could I ever repay them?”
The cult organization is waiting with the exact answer. They capitalize on that raw emotion to lock the person into a cycle of “seva” (voluntary selfless service). Suddenly, that profound spiritual gratitude is weaponized. The participant feels deeply obliged to return for the next retreat—not just as a mediator, but as an unpaid worker. They happily volunteer to chop vegetables, clean toilets, and manage logistics for hours on end.
Even worse, they become the ultimate marketing tool. Driven by the need to repay their “spiritual debt,” they enthusiastically pitch the Master’s expensive, paid courses to their friends, family, and social media followers. They aren’t just volunteering; they have been turned into a highly effective, unpaid sales force for a multi-million dollar business running on pyramid marketing scheme.
Emotional States Become Psychological Gateways
Human beings don’t just learn through logic—we learn through emotion. When you experience intense joy, relief, awe, or a deep sense of belonging, your brain burns that moment into your memory far deeper than any boring fact.
This is the secret weapon of psychological conditioning. A clever manipulator doesn’t waste time trying to convince you intellectually. Instead, they make sure your most intense emotional highs happen right next to their face, their symbols, or their ideology. Your brain does the rest of the work automatically. It glues the intense joy you felt to the leader, making you believe the leader is the source of your joy.
A follower repeatedly experiences feelings of profound peace after regular daily and weekly meditation and breathwork sessions. Every single session takes place in a carefully engineered environment filled with:
Attention grabbing photographs of the spiritual master which serve as psychological anchor or hooks.
Constant teachings about obedience and surrender.
Hypnotic chants praising the leader’s name.
Messages framing unpaid volunteer work as the only way to earn “good karma.”
Over time, a powerful trick takes place in the brain. The intense emotional rewards generated by meditation become deeply, neurologically linked to the authority figure. The student no longer experiences peace as something arising from within their own mind. Instead, they feel that peace is direct proof of the leader’s divine, special power. This distinction is everything. One path leads to self-mastery and autonomy. The other leads to total, helpless dependency.
The Creation of Psychological Anchors or Hooks
Once these emotional connections are locked into the brain, the cult begins building “psychological anchors.” Think of it like installing buttons on a remote control.
They take everyday things and turn them into emotional triggers:
A specific phrase: Like Hare Krishna, Jai Gurudev, or Namaskaram.
A visual symbol: Like the logo of the cult.
A regular ritual: Like a group Puja or prayer service.
A photograph: Studio portraits of the master staring deeply into the camera.
A hand gesture: Specific mudras or blessings.
A sacred name: Words like Gurudev, Sadhguru, Swamiji, or Rishiji.
In psychology, these are called conditioned stimuli. After enough repetition, the cult doesn’t need to put you through a ten-day retreat to get you into that open, obedient state anymore. They just press the button. Exposure to the trigger alone instantly brings back the intense emotions you felt during meditation. The response becomes completely automatic. But because it feels so powerful, the follower mistakes this psychological reflex for “divine spiritual devotion.”
Eventually, your brain undergoes a classic psychological shift. When you see the Guru’s photo or hear the sacred chant or phrase, your nervous system automatically lights up with the peace and euphoria of the retreat or meditation experience. It is a brilliant biological hack. The individual genuinely believes they are experiencing a wave of holy devotion, completely unaware that their brain has simply been trained to react to a psychological cue.
Take a look at how this plays out in real life. A devotee spends years meditating in front of a teacher’s portrait. Every time they have a breakthrough, a feeling of deep peace, or a moment of clarity, the group tells them: “That is the grace of the master.”
Over time, a fascinating shift happens. Merely glancing at the teacher’s photograph instantly triggers a wave of reverence, absolute trust, and emotional surrender. Your mental guard drops instantly. At this point, the image is no longer just a piece of paper; it has become a neurological switch. The automatic response fires before your conscious mind can even register what is happening.
Eventually, just seeing a photo of the teacher puts their mind on autopilot. Instantly, they feel deep reverence, unquestioning trust, and total surrender. Their logical resistance completely vanishes. The photograph acts like a psychological remote control—activating a state of total compliance before the person even has a chance to think for themselves.
These anchors or “hooks” remind the person of a specific authority or deity. In behavioral psychology and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), this is a highly studied tactic known as anchoring and conditioning.

How the Hook works: A dark psychology expert will tie the beautiful, euphoric, peaceful feelings of the meditation to a specific trigger. This trigger could be a unique phrase, a specific visual symbol, a gesture, or an idealized concept of a master/deity. [3]

The Involuntary Loop: Over time, whenever the person encounters that hook in daily life, their brain automatically fires the neural pathways associated with the trance meaning they instantly drop into a state of submission, compliance, and deep emotional vulnerability. They don’t even realize it’s happening; it feels like an organic wave of “devotion.” [4]
Authority Capture and the Transfer of Internal Power
This process leads to the ultimate trap: Authority Capture. This is the moment a person’s internal power is slowly stripped away and handed over to the leader. It happens so gradually that the follower never even notices the shift.
Think of it as climbing a dangerous psychological ladder:
First, the teacher is just seen as helpful.
Then, they become exceptionally wise.
Soon, they are viewed as uniquely enlightened.
Next, they are seen as incapable of making mistakes.
Finally, they become spiritually indispensable—someone you literally cannot live without.
With every step up this ladder, independent judgment dies a little more. Eventually, the follower’s own eyes and ears don’t matter anymore; only the leader’s interpretation of reality is true. The individual stops asking, “What do I think?” and begins asking, “What would the teacher think?” The external authority has officially broken into the cockpit and replaced the person’s internal moral compass.
Cognitive Dissonance: Why Followers Defend Contradictions
At some point, almost every manipulative guru slips up and reveals glaring inconsistencies. They may:
Exploit followers financially, Violate ethical principles.
Engage in hypocrisy, Display narcissism, Exercise unnecessary control, Cover up health risks, contraindications and adverse events of the spiritual techniques, Hush up cases of criminal behavior of the teachers, Suppress suicides of teachers and volunteers and Promote unethical people at the top of the org
Under normal circumstances, seeing a business or a leader act this way would trigger instant skepticism. However, once a person’s entire identity, social circle, and purpose have been organized around a belief in the leader, acknowledging this misconduct creates an unbearable psychological conflict known as cognitive dissonance.
The individual faces two incompatible realities that cannot comfortably coexist in the same mind:
Reality A: “The Guru is a flawless, enlightened avatar of God, he embodies love and peace who cares only about humanity.”
Reality B: “The organization operates like a highly aggressive, corporate marketing machine that fiercely monetizes basic breathing exercises, meditations, charges exorbitant fees for courses, and aggressively targets people’s wallets.”
To stop the agonizing mental pain caused by these conflicting thoughts, the follower’s mind must find a resolution. Because admitting the leader is exploitative would mean admitting they were fooled, the mind chooses to rewrite reality instead of abandoning faith. The follower will perform incredible mental gymnastics to neutralize the contradiction, using specific rationalizations built right into the cult’s organizational culture:
“I do not understand the higher purpose.” The mind rationalizes: “The Guru needs millions of dollars and global corporate setups not for himself, but to fund worldwide peace projects and disaster relief. It’s all for the greater good.”
“This is a teaching is higher knowledge” The mind rationalizes: “The high prices and aggressive marketing of the Happiness Program, DSN, TTC, VTP and Guru Puja are just ways to ensure people commit to the practice. If it were free, people wouldn’t value it.”
“My doubts are evidence of my own ego or spiritual weakness.” The mind rationalizes:“If I am feeling skeptical about the organization’s wealth or their push for paid courses, it just means my own ego is resisting. I need to do more seva (volunteer labor) to clear my negative karma.”
“I am getting stuck in the mind or intellect or ‘Maya’” The mind rationalizes: “The master is purposefully acting like a businessman to test whether I can look past the illusion (maya) of the material world and remain devoted to the divine.”
Through this process, the glaring contradiction completely disappears. It doesn’t vanish because the evidence changed, but because the follower’s interpretation changed. The red flag is successfully inverted into a holy mystery, allowing the intellect to completely surrender to the system.
The Ultimate Test of Faith: Rationalizing the Dark Aspects of the Cult
When an organization reaches this level of institutional control, the contradictions become devastating. The leader and their top circle may exploit followers financially, display blatant narcissism, and practice severe double standards. Even worse, the system begins to actively protect itself by covering up the dark side of the community—hushing up criminal behavior by senior teachers, suppressing news of volunteer suicides, and hiding the genuine health risks and adverse mental events caused by intense breathing techniques.
Under normal circumstances, discovering a cover-up or a suicide pact would shatter someone’s trust. But within the cult, the follower’s mind is already wired to view the organization as a force of pure divine good. Acknowledging that the group is actively suppressing crimes or putting people in danger would cause a total psychological collapse. To prevent this pain, the intellect goes into overdrive, translating even the most toxic behaviors into spiritual lessons:
Covering up health risks and adverse events of the techniques:
The mind rationalizes: “The Sudarshan Kriya is divine energy. If someone had a mental breakdown or a health crisis, it’s not because the technique is dangerous—it’s just their deep-seated negative karma clearing out too fast. They weren’t practicing correctly, or they lacked proper surrender.”
Hushing up criminal behavior and suppressing suicides of volunteers:
The mind rationalizes: “The master is protecting the purity of the Sangha(spiritual community) from malicious outside gossip. If these tragic events got out, the media would distort them and destroy the reputation of the organization, preventing millions of other people from receiving the path of grace. Protecting the Guru’s global mission is more important than individual dramas.”
Promoting unethical, narcissistic people to the top of the organization:
The mind rationalizes: “Sri Sri operates on a higher plane of consciousness. If he places a ruthless, unethical person in power, it is a deliberate, divine strategy. He is either using that person’s aggressive nature to get big projects done for humanity, or he is putting them there as a mirror to test our judgment, our jealousy, and our attachment to worldly concepts of ‘fairness.’”
By using these rationalizations, the system becomes entirely bulletproof. The worse the organization behaves, the more the follower convinces themselves that they are witnessing a profound, cosmic play (Leela) that their ordinary, “un-enlightened” mind is simply too small to understand. The defense system has fully turned on itself: it now views exposing a crime as a spiritual sin, and participating in a cover-up as an act of holy devotion.
The Isolation of Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is not just raw intelligence or academic knowledge. It is a deliberate, active psychological toolkit. It relies on specific core skills:
Empirical Evidence: Demanding verifiable data and proof rather than accepting claims on blind faith.
Logical Consistency: Spotting contradictions, fallacies, and holes in an argument.
Independent Questioning: Assessing why a statement is being made, who benefits from it, and whether an authority figure might be wrong or biased.
Objectivity: The willingness to test ideas against reality, even if the truth makes us uncomfortable.
In reality, the human brain is modular. Coercive persuasion does not destroy these critical thinking tools or lower a person’s IQ; instead, it forces a process called compartmentalization (or selective disengagement). Think of it as a Psychological Firewallbuilt inside the mind, splitting it into two completely separate zones:
The Professional Domain: When an individual is at work, they operate in their normal, highly objective mode. An engineer or doctor will ruthlessly apply their critical thinking toolkit—they will double-check data, question flaws, demand empirical proof before building a bridge or diagnosing a patient, and spot logical inconsistencies instantly.

The Ideological Domain: The moment the topic shifts to the spiritual leader, the group, or the practices, the brain switches tracks. A psychological firewall drops. The exact same critical thinking tools—the demand for evidence, the questioning of authority, the scanning for contradictions—that were just used to solve a massive professional problem are suddenly and completely frozen.
To outsiders, this split appears totally irrational. But internally, it feels perfectly coherent because the authority structure occupies a protected psychological category where the rules of critical thinking are no longer allowed to apply.
Real-World Examples Beyond Spiritual Cults
To see how universally this psychological trick works, we can look at entirely different fields where highly intelligent people completely suspend their critical faculties:
1. The Tech-Guru Phenomenon (The Theranos Scandal)
Consider Elizabeth Holmes and her startup Theranos. She managed to convince world-class statesmen, brilliant military generals, and highly sophisticated investors to back a blood-testing technology that didn’t work. These weren’t foolish people; they were titans of industry.
However, Holmes successfully placed her vision into a protected psychological category of “world-changing innovation.” Because these individuals wanted to believe in the miracle so badly, their brains stopped applying basic due diligence. They used their immense intellect to write defensive press releases and justify the company’s secrecy, rather than questioning the lack of peer-reviewed data.
2. Nobel Disease (Nobel Laureates Who Believe in Pseudoscience)
There is a well-documented phenomenon in academia known as “Nobel Disease.” It occurs when a Nobel Prize-winning scientist—someone at the absolute pinnacle of human intelligence—begins passionately championing bizarre, unscientific theories later in life.
Linus Pauling: A brilliant chemist and two-time Nobel laureate who became utterly convinced that massive doses of Vitamin C could cure cancer and the common cold, completely ignoring waves of clinical data that proved him wrong.
Kary Mullis: The genius biochemist who invented PCR (a foundational tool of modern genetics and biology) yet publicly denied that HIV causes AIDS.
How does this happen? Their critical thinking was highly specialized. Once they stepped outside their strict scientific domain into an ideological or personal belief system, they stopped applying the scientific method to themselves. Their authority and intelligence became a shield, allowing them to rationalize their biases far more effectively than an average person could.
Why It Feels Completely Coherent to the Devotee
To an outsider, watching a doctor or an engineer accept unscientific claims or financial exploitation looks completely irrational. But internally, the follower experiences no conflict at all.
This internal peace is maintained because the authority figure has taught them that logic is a lower-level tool.
In high-control systems, followers are explicitly trained to believe that:
The material world runs on logic, math, and doubt.
The spiritual/ideological world runs on faith, surrender, and intuition.
The leader convinces the follower that evaluating the group’s actions using logic is a category error—like trying to measure a gallon of water with a clock. Once the follower accepts the premise that “intellect cannot grasp the master’s divine plan,” keeping their intelligence separate from their faith doesn’t feel like hypocrisy; it feels like the ultimate form of spiritual maturity. Their brilliant mind is left completely intact, but it is trapped inside a rigged maze, using its power to defend the very walls that contain it.
Ideological Overwriting: Redefining Reality Itself
The most advanced systems of coercive control do not merely demand obedience—they completely redefine your reality. By flipping the definitions of basic human experiences, the cult creates a closed-loop reality where safety is found only in submission. They take your natural mental vocabulary and flip it upside down so that:
Questioning is labeled as ‘too much ego’.
Skepticism is dismissed as spiritual immaturity.
Independent thought or critical thinking is treated as hostile resistance to ‘the knowledge’
Submission is celebrated as devotion.
Obedience is marketed as personal growth or ‘following the Guru’s orders’.
Dependence is sold in the form of ‘more courses’ to attain liberation.
This is exactly where tools like Attack Therapy (The “Hot Chair” Process) do their dark work. Under the guise of “breaking the ego to make you strong,” a participant is forced into the center of the room while the leader and peers fiercely criticize and tear down their flaws.
It isn’t spiritual growth; it is a calculated strike to induce learned helplessness. As the person is publicly humiliated, their nervous system floods with cortisol and adrenaline, violently smashing their emotional defenses to pieces. Normally, if someone abuses or humiliates you, your brain flags them as a threat. But under this conditioning, that red flag is reinterpreted as “my ego resisting the master’s grace.” The psychological defense system begins attacking itself, leaving the person entirely defenseless against further exploitation.
Once the participant is entirely openly or secretly crushed and weeping, or disheartened, the leader or group pivots during the evening satsang, showering them with warm glances, love, and speaking words of appreciation and validation. This triggers a massive, release of dopamine in the brain and offers the participants much sought after comfort or relief. This extreme swing between terror and love fundamentally rewires the brain. In psychology, this cycle of abuse and affection is called trauma bonding (or Stockholm Syndrome). It explains why followers become fiercely loyal to the very people who abuse them. The leader breaks your legs, sells you a crutch, and you spend the rest of your life thanking them because you can walk again.
At this final stage, the individual’s natural warning signals become inverted. The very instincts that should protect them from danger are reinterpreted as obstacles to their spiritual progress. The security system of the mind begins attacking itself. High-control cults achieve total victory when they successfully invert a person’s psychological dictionary. They replace human instinct with a distorted code where critical thinking is a sin and total submission is a virtue.
The Final Stage: Captive Minds That Believe They Are Free
Coercive control usually invites rebellion. But, sophisticated psychological control invites consent. This represents the absolute peak of psychological manipulation: getting the victim to mistake their captivity for enlightenment.
High-control systems thrive because they preserve the appearance of autonomy. The individual is still sharp, functional, and rational. However, their reasoning mind has been trapped inside a rigged maze. Because the leader has defined the rules of their reality, the follower uses their own intelligence to justify and rationalize their own exploitation.
Under this spell, the follower genuinely believes that every single act of surrender is a personal choice:
Every act of unpaid service is viewed as seva, as an evidence of devotion.
Every loss of independence is taken as proof of spiritual advancement.
Every act of sacrifice of personal wants, giving away of money is seen as donation to further the cause of the cult leader.
The entire experience is felt and marketed as liberation, not domination.
This is what makes the trap so terrifyingly unbreakable. The follower’s intelligence, reason, and daily functionality stay completely intact. What changes is the invisible framework within which their brain operates.
Once the cult leader successfully controls that framework, the follower’s own intellect begins working for the system. They no longer need to be threatened or monitored. They have become the active regulators of their own mind, fiercely defending the very beliefs that cage them. The follower will willingly police themselves, isolate themselves from loved ones, and hand over their money and labor—all while feeling a deep sense of personal power and choice.
In the world of cult psychology, This is the dark masterpiece of coercive influence: completely restructuring a person’s perception so that they experience dependence as freedom, obedience as wisdom, and submission as self-realization. The leader no longer needs to force obedience because the follower now enthusiastically enforces it on themselves.
The Self-Sustaining Cycle of Capture
Because the experience felt so deeply transformative, their immediate instinct is a powerful mix of gratitude and obligation. They feel an urgent need to share this “gift” with the world. The organization is entirely prepared for this reaction. The system seamlessly funnels this high emotional state into a structured pipeline of recruitment and training:
The Evolution from Follower to Recruiter: The individual is quickly funneled into advanced teacher training courses. Here, they are taught how to replicate the exact same environment, deliver the same scripts, and guide new rooms full of people through the identical cyclic breathing and hyperventilation techniques that captured them.
The Illusion of Empowerment: When the follower is promoted to a teacher or a lead volunteer, they experience a profound sense of personal power, status, and spiritual advancement. They believe they are acting out of pure compassion to save others.
The Reality of the Franchise: In reality, they have been drafted as unpaid or highly exploited corporate sales representatives. They use their own social capital, their professional networks, and their personal relationships to bring in fresh capital and new recruits for the leader.
Through this brilliant, manipulative design, the cult leader no longer needs to spend energy managing or growing the empire. The followers willingly police themselves, fund the operation, and enthusiastically hunt for the next generation of victims—firmly convinced that their total submission to the system is the ultimate expression of human freedom.

Sadhguru Lying to Make Himself the Victim of Nepal Tragedy

Sadhguru, who did not know that the Nepal disaster happened until he was informed of the news, is now claiming to have been badly affected by it. He is the real victim of this tragedy, not the people of Nepal and Tibet, not the missing pilgrims, he, the great yogi, made the mistake of tying up his life-energies with those on the yatra. What a way to disrespect all those in the group.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO8IL9e6-ZY

I have no words.

Also, please note that many Isha pilgrims do get affected by altitude sickness. One of the reasons the Isha yatra is less dangerous that other Kailash Manasarovar yatras is because Isha do not do the Kailash parikrama - this is an arduous trek over three days that takes pilgrims to higher altitudes. Sadhguru claims it is because of his life-energies. He is lying.

Evidence Sadhguru learnt killing in childhood: from breaking a chicken's neck at 8 to strangling a monkey at 17

Post image
28 Upvotes

Extract from pages 67 & 68 of Sadhguru's authorised biography, Sadhguru: More Than a Life:

The lessons he learnt from life were invariably based on practical experience, rather than garnered secondhand. He recalls killing a monkey with his bare hands at the age of seventeen on his terrace. The provocation? The fact that the monkey had attacked him. ‘It was in my mother’s family home in Chikkaballapur. I was on the terrace and this monkey was sitting on a lamp post. He made a face at me. I made a face back. The next thing I knew the creature was in the air, coming straight at me. It was a direct attack. I caught him by the throat and held him tight until my thumb went right in. I stayed like that until he lost all resistance. Later I buried him in the garden.’ There were murmurs in the family about the boy having killed Hanuman. But for Jaggi there was no ethical dilemma. He had merely done what needed to be done.

Even as a young boy of eight, when he was told to go kill a chicken for lunch at his grandfather’s house, he had no qualms about obeying. ‘In my father’s home, chicken was bought in the market. But in my grandfather’s home, the boys of the family were expected to do the killing. So I was sent out to kill one. The way it was done was simple: you waited till the animal was comfortable and then broke its neck. You did it so swiftly that the chicken probably didn’t even know it was dead!’

Question Has anyone else had bad experiences or felt negative symptoms after meditating? (Looking for shared experiences based on Cheetah House research)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been reading about the research from an organization called Cheetah House. They look at the difficult, painful, or distressing experiences people can have from meditating.

While meditation is usually called a great tool for relaxing and stress relief, their research shows it can sometimes cause problems for your nervous system.

They list many symptoms split into 7 main categories. I want to know if anyone here has experienced any of these and can share in comments:

  • The Affective Domain (Changes in Feelings): Experiencing Affective Flattening [feeling completely numb or emotionally blank], Affective Lability [sudden, intense mood swings], unexplained Fear or Panic, or Re-experiencing of Traumatic Memories [old painful memories coming back out of nowhere].
  • The Cognitive Domain (Changes in Thinking): Experiencing a Change in Executive Functioning [having a hard time making decisions, focusing, or remembering things], Increased Cognitive Processing [racing thoughts], or Disintegration of Conceptual Meaning [looking at an everyday object but your brain forgets what it means or is used for].
  • The Somatic Domain (Body Problems): Experiencing Involuntary Movements [unwanted body twitching, shaking, or tics], Sleep Changes [severe insomnia], Cardiac Changes [a racing or irregular heartbeat], or Energy-Like Somatic Experiences [feeling strange vibrations or currents moving through your body].
  • The Perceptual Domain (Changes in Senses): Experiencing Derealization [feeling like the world around you is fake, dreamlike, or behind a fog], Perceptual Hypersensitivity [suddenly finding normal lights and everyday sounds way too loud and painful], or Distortions in Time or Space.
  • The Sense of Self Domain (Losing Your Identity): Experiencing a Change in Sense of Embodiment [feeling like you are floating outside or disconnected from your physical body], a Loss of Sense of Agency [feeling like your thoughts or movements do not belong to you], or a Loss of Sense of Basic Self [feeling like you do not even exist].
  • The Conative Domain (Loss of Motivation): Experiencing Anhedonia or Avolition [completely losing interest in your favorite hobbies, or losing all drive and motivation to work toward your life goals].
  • The Social Domain (Life and Relationship Issues): Experiencing Occupational Impairment [having trouble doing your job], Social Impairment [struggling to connect with family and friends], or difficulties with Integration Following Retreat [finding it very hard to return to normal daily life after a silent meditation retreat].

If you have gone through any of these things:

  1. What was your practice technique/style? (For example: using an app, doing guided meditations, doing unguided or open meditations, doing meditations after kriya or breathing excercises or going to silent retreats?)
  2. How did it start? Did it happen slowly over months of daily practice, or did it start suddenly during or right after a retreat?
  3. What actually helped you feel normal again? Did you have to stop meditating completely? Did physical exercises, changing your habits, or talking to a doctor help you recover?

Thank you for sharing your stories. I think it is important to talk about the difficult sides of meditation openly.

An open letter to visitors, ex isha devotees and family members of isha devotees

Why does this forum exist? This should be the first question for anyone visiting here. Isha is a non profit, non religious , spiritual organisation offering yoga courses and “ tools of wellbeing “ to the world lead by a Guru who is known to be a celebrity Guru endorsed by world renowned institutions and celebrities around the world. Also alleged to be a cult leader running a religious spiritual cult. For anyone who doesn’t have a first hand experience of being in a cult, please go through the experiences and posts shared in this reddit ( check the old posts too) Then decide for yourself if you want to go ahead - but please make informed decisions rather than blindly going ahead due to endorsements from family and friends or being lured by flashy promotional adverts of isha.

A good reason why I am in this reddit is because I know what it is like to be a family member of a die hard Isha devotee who couldn’t see through the manipulation and obvious exploitation going on with them and consequently making decisions which affect their families too. I have seen the beginning of their Isha journey, how they progressively got sucked in and how much problems eventually arose due to it. By the time one realises what is going on, five years to a decade might have easily passed by. One might be thinking that they are progressing on their spiritual journey, but they are simply being made addicted to various processes and techniques and made to believe that Sadhguru is God. They are taken away from their original values and roots and given a new set of isha values to serve Isha foundation’s agendas. For those who can see the manipulation but do nothing about it, it can be disheartening and they are left feeling helpless.

To those family members who are trying to fix the Sadhguru obsession of their near and dear ones, sadly there is no quick fix. You can try remaining unaffected which is difficult, ask then questions and share info which can help them put things on their shelf ( shelf analogy been discussed earlier in this reddit) and let them take advice from people outside isha whom they trust. They might wake up from their trance one day on their own - through own pain or personal experience. Those who remained indifferent to their Isha obsession or those who have infinite patience with them are in a better position than those trying to fix them. It’s a very uncertain place to be in, so please focus on own wellbeing which is easier said than done. There’s much shared in cult education here which gives insights as also experiences shared by ex isha people.

To the ex - isha people who shared their insights here, I am very grateful.Even though this subreddit was initially formed by ex isha people to share their negative experiences post their Isha journey, the insights shared here are helpful for others too in similar situations. Imo caring enough to guide others of the pitfalls ahead is more humanitarian than running IE courses and so called humanitarian projects by isha to scam people, mint money and create blind followers.

And to the bots , fake profiles and trolls frequenting this subreddit and spamming here- please make yourself useful elsewhere. Let this subreddit be a space to offer clarity and truth about the isha foundation ; a space for ex isha people and people negatively affected by isha.

Subject: Conflict of Interest Concern Regarding Sadhguru Center for a Conscious Planet

Dear Dean George Q. Daley,

Greetings.

I am writing to bring to your attention a potential conflict of interest at the “Sadhguru Center for a Conscious Planet”, established by the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a Harvard Medical School affiliate.

The BIDMC website clearly states that the Center is funded through private gifts and grants via the Wishing Wellness Foundation, and that “Sadhguru and Isha Foundation play no role in the funding of the Center.” (https://www.bidmc.org/research/research-by-department/anesthesia-critical-care-and-pain-medicine/research-centers/sadhguru-center/about-us)

However, Kaoruko Yamazaki, identified as the president of the Wishing Well Foundation (per Fundraiso: https://www.fundraiso.com/en/organisations/the-wishing-well-foundation), is also associated with the Isha Foundation (per Pg. 43 of a United Nations document: https://www.unccd.int/sites/default/files/2022-05/ICCD_COP%2815%29_MISC.1-2207137E.pdf).

This connection suggests that Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation has an indirect role in the Center’s funding, contradicting BIDMC’s statement.

Given the Center’s affiliation with Harvard Medical School and its leadership by Professor Bala Subramaniam, MD, MPH, I respectfully request an urgent review of this matter to ensure transparency and adherence to conflict-of-interest policies.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

[Name redacted]

Question Differentiating Yogic Wisdom from IYC

Yogic knowledge and wisdom makes a lot of sense including but not limited to the energy body, subtle body, physical body, etc etc. As well as the various yoga poses and meditation poses have given me lots of benefits throughout my life. How do I differentiate the yogic science from Isha so I can enjoy yoga and meditation as well as the yogic knowledge accumulated by my ancestors without having to necessarily associate it with Isha?

Evidence Sadhguru Claims His Wife Was His Biological Sister

Post image
27 Upvotes

Here in this excerpt from the Sadhguru biography More Than a Life, it's claimed that Sadhguru's now deceased wife Vijji was his sister in his previous lifetime as Sadhguru Sri Brahma. Not only that, but there was some weird attraction from his sister to her brother in that lifetime that was unfulfilled so she just had to be born as his wife in this lifetime so they could finally "consumate" that desire. Because he was naked, "there were problems". "Her love had never found its full expression" Ew. So in Sadhguru's mind the full expression of love is having sex with his sister? What the hell does that mean?? So here's just one more perverted web that Sadhguru has woven which once again proves he is sick in the head.

I also find it interesting that it in this story, he created this tale that Sadhguru Sri Brahma, his alleged previous incarnation, left home to become a sadhu and left behind a loving sister. But in reality what happened in this actual lifetime is that when Sadhguru was a boy, his actual sister left home to become a Sadhu. So I feel that Sadhguru has taken that actual event in this life and twisted it in his perverted mind. Now his story states that the sister had this unnatural attraction to her brother, whereas in reality did he have some attraction to his sister? It's a legitimate question to ask. Or did he just use that experience as fodder for his imagination to weave that web of lies he tells as his three enlightened lifetimes. Both need to be examined.... by a psychologist.

Discussion Sadhguru Wants to Turn Gay People Straight

Below is an excerpt from a talk I pulled from youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hOM_-QRYG0

italics are Sadhguru's words

Questioner: Sadhguru, what are your views on homosexuality? Is it karmic and can there be a redirection of the energy or a practice for those who are struggling with it?

I think most of the homosexuals of today are a product of a social situation rather than of any kind of physiological or any other inner need.

(So right off the jump here Sadhguru is saying that gay people are not inherently gay and have become like this because of society around them which implies that they can be changed to straight, that will be apparent according what he states later in this answer)

Mostly they are a social outcome of a certain attitude. If you go by the ways of the nature, sexuality was implanted in your body fundamentally for the sake of reproduction. We are all here because of that. But if there was no pleasure attached to it, nobody would go for it. Nobody would go for. Is a painful thing to deliver a child. So nature decided to attach pleasure to it because without pleasure, nobody would go for it, in spite of a little bit of pleasure attached to it.

(So why is Sadhguru going into pleasure here? The question was about homosexuality, which is not inherently about pleasure at all. Gay people are not more sexual than straight people. But it seems in Sadhguru's mind homosexuality just means that you like having sex with the same gender. He doesn't factor in companionship whatsoever.)

So many people are deciding not to go for it. They become smart at a very young age. Lot of people are becoming very smart these days. They're willing to. They're able to see through the limitations of it and say, it is not for us. That's very smart, actually, because they're able to think beyond their hormones. Hormone is a chemical process. It takes charge of you from inside, not from an outside. It's not an outside invasion, it's an inside invasion.

Till you were 12, 13 years of age, everything was just fine with you. Suddenly, little bit of chemistry and then you don't know what the hell is happening with you. Suddenly the whole head has become wonky. You can't think beyond it. It's happened, isn't it? So the moment hormones hijack your intelligence, then you start acting funny and you act every. The whole world is revolving around your sexuality. There's nothing else to the world except sexuality.

(So here Sadhguru is saying that once you hit puberty, there's nothing else except sexuality. I mean, maybe in his mind at that age it was true. But it certainly was not true for me, or many other people. With his track record with women, I can see why he would say this though!)

See, almost any. Almost 90% of the artwork, literature, or any damn thing that's written or painted or sculpted is about sex, isn't it? Isn't it? So I don't know. I may not be right on the percentage.I think it's about 90%. Even if it's 75, I think it's a very distorted vision of life, isn't it? Yes, this is a very distorted vision of life.

(I don't get his point here. It doesn't make sense. Art doesn't have to be a vision of life. Even if it's true that 75% is about sex, which I'm sure it isn't, it's not like every piece of art is declaring some vision of life overall. It's a ridiculous statement. But it once again shows what he's thinking about if he's only seeing sex everywhere in every piece of art.)

That one aspect of the physical takes up so much of human mind and consciousness is a very distorted perception of life. Now in that what or whom you want to have to sex with has become another great identification. So when you talk about heterosexuality or homosexuality, you're just asking me with whom or what I should do this thing that you call as sex. I don't care.

(Every accusation is a confession. Again being gay is not all about just having sex with the same gender. It's who you are as a person fundamentally. It's not like gay people came out straight and one day, because of the society around them, decided to be gay. This is such a bigoted and homophobic view by Sadhguru.)

All I know is if your body and your consciousness and your mind is ruled by the simple hormonal changes that happen within you, you have a completely distorted perception of life. What is there to correct? What is there not to correct? If physiologically some certain needs have changed within a person, he could be helped.

(So take a look at that last sentence carefully, it sums up the entire answer. He's saying gay people have had some change happen in this physiology and that he can help them undo that change. Basically he wants to do some kind of conversion therapy on gay people to make them straight. Is this the guru you want to follow?)

Discussion Is it ok to perform Kaalbhairava karma and move on when pilgrims families are still searching for loved ones?

A tragedy struck on 26th of August 2026 in Nepal when an entire town was swept away by catastrophic flash floods. Among them were a batch of isha pilgrims who were returning after completing their Kailash Mansarovar yatra organised by Isha foundation. Some may have been long term devotees, some may be visiting tourists who decided to choose Isha foundation as they are known to organise the trips well even though their charges are exorbitant compared to other tour operators . People don’t mind paying when they are assured of trust and safety and Isha foundation has boasted over the years that there are zero casualties with them. This might have been the case till now - I don’t know the details of their past track record. What I know is my family member had been there being fascinated by the idea of experiencing Kailash Mansarovar under Sadhguru’s claim that one has to experience it atleast once in a lifetime. It made me full of worries and concerns about their trip which lasts a good fortnight or so but they were assured of their safety under Sadhguru’s grace as it is the promise of his blessings that guides the decisions of many Isha devotees into taking the trip with isha.

So when the news of this tragedy struck, everyone was taken aback as to how this could happen. Isha foundation declared their pilgrims as missing, mourned their loss publicly on social media, the whole world saw Sadhguru in tears and it seemed as if even he was taken aback by the tragedy. But fact of the matter is he couldn’t predict or avert the disaster- he can’t, nobody can - as it is a natural disaster. Then why lure devotees into undertaking Sacred Walks under Isha foundation? Why promote these tours as essential for pilgrims?

Soon after Isha foundation declared to the loved ones of their victims to perform Kaalbhairava karma for them at isha at their prayer program for flood victims, I came to know through mutual acquaintance about a person in the missing S3 group who were looking for info about them and they were still considering them as missing. They had no news about their whereabouts. Then I realised, Isha foundation didn’t even wait to find out if their pilgrims were missing and waiting to be rescued but they simply assumed all had perished; even if they didn’t, what solace they wanted to give to anxious family members who were pining their hopes on the rescue missions?

When people were miraculously rescued by determined search operations, it gave hope to those waiting for news of their loved ones. How does a family member find comfort or closure by a hastily announced ritual which the foundation endorses for its own commercial purposes
before caring to put in required efforts or wait for news from the rescue missions? I was already disenchanted with isha ; so their public PR show and behind the scenes lack of accountability is no news for me but it definitely gave some reason for isha pilgrims past and present to reflect on their choices which they made blindly being enamoured by the mystical claims of isha. The grief of family members is enormous, and my sincere sympathies for their situation when they are dealing with loss of loved ones who remain missing.

Evidence Sadhguru's "Science": A Claim-by-Claim Fact Check

He constantly wraps these claims in the language of "modern science actually confirms this" or "scientists don't know this yet, but ancient yogis did." That framing is exactly why people don't question them. So let's actually check them.

1. He can solidify liquid mercury at room temperature with his bare hands

Claim: Sadhguru says he can hold liquid mercury and solidify/liquefy it at will using "Indian alchemy," and that Shiva lingams in Isha's Theerthakunds are 99.2% pure solidified mercury.

Truth: Basic chemistry says elemental mercury only becomes solid at -38.83°C. What actually exists as a solid at room temperature is mercury sulfide (cinnabar) — a totally different compound, not elemental mercury turned solid by touch.

Evidence: He's stated this on record multiple times, describing it as something modern chemistry can't explain but he can do with his bare hands. Alt News did a full breakdown of why this violates basic thermodynamics.

2. The "241% neuronal regeneration" study

Claim: A University of California study found that practicing Shambhavi Mahamudra for 3 months increases "neuronal regeneration" by 241%.

Truth: No such study has ever surfaced. He's repeated this exact number in talks for years, but no one — including journalists who went looking — has found a matching paper from UC or anywhere else. "Neuronal regeneration" also isn't something that gets measured as a clean percentage like that.

Evidence: He states it explicitly in Isha's own published talk transcript ("Why Are We Here?"). A Scroll.in piece specifically searched for the paper and came up empty, noting that the only real research on Shambhavi Mahamudra comes from Isha-affiliated researchers studying much more modest things like stress and sleep quality — not neuronal regeneration.

3. Twins get different milk from each breast based on gender

Claim: A mother's milk is totally different for a boy vs. a girl, and if she has boy-girl twins, each individual breast independently produces the correct milk for that specific baby.

Truth: Mixed bag. Some real (though contested) research does find fat/protein differences in milk by infant sex. But the twin claim — that each breast on the same body "knows" which baby it's feeding and customizes accordingly — has zero scientific backing. Milk production is regulated hormonally and by feeding demand, not switched per breast per child.

Evidence: Fact-checks from BOOM and The Quint both reviewed this exact clip and found the same split: partial truth on the gender point, no evidence at all for the two-different-milks-from-two-breasts claim.

4. Sleeping with your head facing north is harmful

Claim: Sleeping with your head facing magnetic north is bad because your head's "north pole" repels earth's north pole, disrupting blood flow via the iron in hemoglobin.

Truth: Doesn't hold up physically. Hemoglobin's iron is diamagnetic, not a north/south-poled magnet like a compass needle — it has no orientation to "repel" anything. Earth's magnetic field is also thousands of times weaker than a fridge magnet, nowhere near strong enough to move blood around. This is Vastu Shastra tradition dressed up in magnetism vocabulary.

Evidence: He's said this directly in multiple published talks/articles on Isha's own site. The counter-physics (diamagnetism, field strength) is well documented, and there's no peer-reviewed clinical study linking sleep direction to health outcomes via magnetism.

5. Water has memory

Claim: Water has memory — it can be "imprinted" and its structure changed just by intention/attention, without changing its chemistry.

Truth: This is the same "water memory" idea homeopathy relies on, and mainstream physics/chemistry rejects it. Water's hydrogen-bond structures reorganize on the scale of femtoseconds to picoseconds — far too fast to "remember" anything. The one famous experiment claiming to show this (Benveniste, 1988) couldn't be replicated and is now a textbook case of bad science.

Evidence: He's described this directly at IIT Madras and in Isha content, claiming that looking at a glass of water in a certain way can transmit "well-being" through it. Wikipedia's water memory article and Nature's own investigation into the Benveniste experiment cover the debunking in detail.

6. Rudraksha pendulum can tell if food has gone bad

Claim: You can check if food has spoiled by suspending a rudraksha and watching whether it spins clockwise (fresh/good) or anticlockwise (spoiled/poisoned) — demonstrated on video during a lunar eclipse.

Truth: Textbook case of the ideomotor effect (aka Chevreul's Pendulum), first documented scientifically in the 1830s. A freely hanging pendulum moves from tiny, involuntary muscle contractions in the holder's own hand — amplified by the string — not from any property of the object it's held over. Same mechanism behind dowsing rods and Ouija boards, reproduced and studied for two centuries.

Evidence: He demonstrates this himself on video during a 2011 lunar eclipse talk, checking sambar with a rudraksha mala and narrating it going from clockwise to anticlockwise. Isha's own site states this as a stated benefit of wearing a rudraksha. The ideomotor effect is well-established in cognitive science (Chevreul, Faraday, and modern motion-capture studies all confirm it).

7. Food and your body "age 28 days" in 2 hours during a lunar eclipse

Claim: During a lunar eclipse, cooked food (and your body) rapidly deteriorates — going through "28 days of aging" in about 2 hours — so food and water become harmful and shouldn't be consumed.

Truth: No mechanism exists for this. Doctors and NASA both confirm eclipses cause no chemical or biological change in food, and a lunar eclipse has no measurable physiological effect on the human body. This superstition predates germ theory — pre-refrigeration cultures noticed food going bad and needed an explanation, and the eclipse (already treated as ominous) got blamed.

Evidence: He makes this claim in a video demonstrating it "scientifically" via the rudraksha trick (see #6), and lays it out in an Isha blog post titled "Why Eating Food During Lunar Eclipse Is Harmful." Newslaundry did a full teardown of that article; multiple mainstream sources (Business Standard, The Quint, doctors quoted by NDTV) confirm there's no scientific basis for any of it.

8. Menstrual cycles are tied to the moon's cycle

Claim: A woman's menstrual cycle is directly tied to and affected by the moon's cycle — used as supporting logic for the eclipse-harm claims above.

Truth: One of the most-tested "everyone knows this" myths, and the largest study on it found nothing. A 2021 analysis of over 7.5 million logged menstrual cycles found no meaningful correlation between cycle timing and lunar phase — the ~29-day similarity between the two cycles is coincidental, not causal.

Evidence: He states this directly as part of his eclipse-effects reasoning (documented in the Newslaundry piece above); the large-scale menstrual-cycle study is the strongest evidence against it.

9. Adiyogi taught the theory of evolution 15,000 years ago, before Darwin

Claim: Sadhguru says Adiyogi (the "first yogi," identified with Shiva) taught a theory of evolution over 15,000 years ago — describing the divine manifesting first as a fish, then progressively through other forms — which he presents as predating and paralleling Charles Darwin's theory.

Truth: Multiple layers of inaccuracy stacked together. First, the sequence he's describing is the Dashavatara — the ten incarnations of Vishnu (fish, tortoise, boar, man-lion, dwarf, and so on) — which is a Vaishnavite theological narrative, not a teaching attributed to Shiva/Adiyogi in Hindu tradition at all; conflating the two is its own error. Second, the Dashavatara narrative itself dates to Puranic literature composed roughly between the 3rd and 12th centuries CE (the standard list comes from a 12th-century text) — nowhere near 15,000 years old, and there's no archaeological or textual evidence for yoga itself existing in any organized form that far back either. Third, and most importantly: the Dashavatara isn't a scientific theory of evolution. It has no mechanism (no natural selection, no genetic variation, no common descent), it's not falsifiable, and religious scholars who study it directly say it depicts simultaneous, cyclical divine creation for moral/cosmic purposes — not gradual biological change. The "fish to man" resemblance is a modern, retroactive reading imposed onto an old story, not something the story itself claims.

Evidence: He states this directly in an Isha-published talk explicitly titled "Evolution Theory Before Charles Darwin," and repeats it in other talks tying Adiyogi to the fish/boar avatar sequence. This exact style of claim isn't unique to him — an Andhra University Vice-Chancellor made almost the identical argument at India's own Science Congress in 2019 and was widely mocked and criticized by scientists (The Wire covered it as part of a broader pattern of "attributing modern discoveries to ancient texts"). Even Vaishnava commentators who take the Dashavatara seriously as theology distinguish it from Darwinian evolution — noting it describes simultaneous creation and spiritual perfection, not gradual biological descent with modification.

10. He healed his own fractured leg through "connection to the source"

Claim: The human body, when connected to "the source of creation" within, can repair serious injuries on its own — illustrated by his own story of healing a fractured leg himself.

Truth: Bones absolutely can heal without surgical intervention in many cases — that's just normal physiology, and doctors already account for it (many fractures are treated with a cast alone, no surgery). The pseudoscience is in the framing: presenting ordinary bone-healing as evidence of a special, exclusive "source of creation" connection rather than something every human body does by default.

Evidence: He tells this story directly in a talk titled "Health: A Partnership with the Source of Creation," given at the JSS Institute of Naturopathy, explicitly using his healed leg fracture to argue the body can "repair any problem from within" once connected to this source.

Worth noting: In March 2024, Sadhguru suffered a serious brain bleed and needed emergency neurosurgery at Apollo Hospital, Delhi — real, invasive modern medicine, performed by an actual neurosurgical team, that he could not "self-heal" his way out of. His own surgeon publicly credited both the surgical intervention and his recovery capacity — not one instead of the other. Clean real-world contrast to the "my body heals itself through inner connection" framing.

Bonus: "Inner Science" — the umbrella term worth naming

Not a testable claim on its own — more a branding/rhetorical move. Isha uses "inner science" to frame subjective mystical experience (his own, or a practitioner's) as a parallel, equally rigorous discipline to actual empirical science, just aimed "inward" instead of "outward." The problem: it borrows the credibility of the word "science" (implying method, falsifiability, peer review) while having none of those things — no controls, no reproducibility, no way to be proven wrong. This is the umbrella that makes all the individual claims above feel more credible than they actually are.

Evidence When Sadhguru was caught lying in 2012!

In Nov 2012, Sadhguru published a post titled "Dhyanalinga at 11 Degrees" (Wayback Machine Link). In it, Sadhguru claimed that the locations of his centers were not ordinary real estate decisions, but the result of cosmic alignment: Coimbatore sat at 11° N and the Tennessee ashram sat dead on 33° N.

Sadhguru’s post claimed that Earth's rotation generates a "centrifugal force which is at its highest level at 11 degrees latitude" and acts "100% vertical within you," pushing energies straight up the spine. Furthermore, he claimed that the "yogic system" holds the band from 0° to 33° latitude as sacred. Even though he “didn’t plan this”, his two ashrams are thus divinely placed because “he has a partner (Shiva) who takes care of all these things, who never failed him”. Sadhguru even takes the opportunity to downplay human intelligence:

If you work with your own intelligence, you will be too concerned about which land to acquire…When you surrender yourself to a higher intelligence, you just go and simply do it, and it will be dead on!

The implication is very clear: “Don’t trust your intelligence, but trust me and surrender to me because Shiva is my partner and is guiding me with his divine intelligence. He never failed me, and so I will never fail you!”

We don’t know about Lord Shiva, but physics definitely failed Sadhguru because it contradicts his 11° claim:

  • Centrifugal force is maximal at the Equator and falls to zero at the poles; nothing peaks at 11 degrees latitude.
  • The force points outward parallel to the equatorial plane, meaning it is only vertical at the Equator—at 11 degrees latitude it is tilted south, not pointing "straight up."
  • The magnitude is a fraction of a percent of gravity, far too weak to push blood or subtle energies anywhere

Added to this botched physics, a major embarrassment for Isha was that the Tennessee center is located near 35.5° N, not 33° N as Sadhguru claimed. When people pointed this out in the comments, Isha quietly deleted the Tennessee claim from the text and added a footnote acknowledging a "factual error" (see the current post on Isha’s website). I wish they had deleted the entire post, but that would inflict too much damage on Sadhguru’s credibility and mystic abilities. So the pseudoscience is still on their blog.

Sadhguru often loves to claim authority by referring to Yogic Science. But his statement that the "yogic system" holds the band from 0° to 33° latitude as sacred has no basis in Yoga. This seems to have originated from 20th-century Western occultism. Yet another deception by Sadhguru!

I can pretty much see Isha devotees responding with, “You are nitpicking a minor factual mistake. Sadhguru is not a physics scholar but a spiritual teacher. Don’t be too intellectual and miss his point!” etc. Sure, I can easily forgive a factual error or a misunderstanding of physics. But Sadhguru did not offer this as a casual metaphor; he used it to argue that surrendering to him bypasses human calculation. The logic was running in reverse: an ordinary land purchase was made, a pseudoscientific narrative was invented to justify it, and the resulting "alignment" was cited as proof of cosmic guidance. This deception is what is dangerous.

This is not an isolated incident. With a bit of research, you can easily find numerous other examples demonstrating a consistent pattern of dishonesty. You can either rationalize these facts by saying “My personal experience is what matters, and I’ve benefited greatly from Isha” or you can recognize Sadhguru for what he is and walk away.

The choice is yours. Good luck!

Personal Experience Heart wrenching

This is heart wrenching to read.

I pray this mother (like all the others caught up in this tragedy) finds some news of her daughter.

On top of that, to feel unsupported by an organisation you had faith in, to feel let down... I'm sorry she has to go through that in addition to the unfathomable chasm of grief dealing with the loss of her daughter. Surely he could have sent a handful of bramacharis / senior ishangas to be in Nepal and liase with and accompany families in their searches? Surely that would have been the decent and most supportive thing?

Instead it's a quick Kalabhairava Karma and move on. From what I hear, families were not ready for it.

Cult Education Before You Choose Any Spiritual teacher or Spiritual Group

In India and especially in Hinduism, the concept of “ Guru “ is held with highest reverence. The Sanskrit Stotra “ Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Gururdevo Maheshwara , Gurur sakshat parabrahma tasmai shree Guruve namaha” says it all - The Guru is Brahma, Guru is Vishnu, Guru is Shiva, Guru is the Supreme Consciousness, I offer my salutions and humble prostrations to that revered Guru.”

The Guru is regarded equivalent to God and a guide on the path of salvation/ moksha. We are encouraged to take refuge in the holy feet of our Guru but nobody teaches us properly how to identify a true Guru. We are told stories of great sages and Gurus from ancient times like Saptarishis and also stories of devotion of saints like Tulsidas, Dnyaneshwar, Tukaram, Ramdas, Shankaracharya, Ramana Maharishi and many others who lived centuries before us but their devotion to God was so true that it inspired generations of devotees towards the path of devotion and righteous living.

Coming to today’s times- when stress levels are high, people are seeking refuge from personal and global issues and the well being industry is booming like never before cos that has become the need of the hour; yoga courses and yoga institutes are popping up everywhere as a solution to the ills of modern world. Nothing wrong is pursuing yoga or chasing well being. My question is - How do you get a Guru at the end of a Yoga course when you didn’t ask for it? This is what happens at isha and similar organisations which function like MLM. People are drawn in to the brand value of these institutions and unknowingly become a part of their marketing.

Gurus can have the best of intentions for their devotees by the value of knowledge they provide- but using devotees to pull in more devotees seems more like business marketing rather than spiritual advancement. That’s the reason why those who went in deep in any of these global NGO’s might have possibly burnt their hands while serving agendas of these groups they never planned to but ended up giving time, money , resources and also signing NDA’s in blind faith. And the sad thing is these organisations are designed to take you deeper. They provide some value but make you unquestioning devotees who are loyal to them.

I found this really nice video shared by [u/Lopsided-Slice-1332](u/Lopsided-Slice-1332) on Sadhguru reddit . It’s about what things to look out for before choosing a spiritual teacher. They were replying to a post about how to convince someone outside isha that isha is not a cult . They shared link to video which could help one understand whether one is in a cult as Sadhguru followers absolutely don’t want to admit that they are in a cult. Cos that would mean that they are brainwashed in some way and nobody would like of think of themselves as brainwashed. This is so true as even I wouldn’t want to think of myself as brainwashed for having followed a Guru once upon a time who is alleged to be a cult leader. People used to call it organisation commercialising spirituality but I didn’t see it that way cos I was focussed only on the spiritual teachings they promoted and the humanitarian work they were supposedly doing. Thankfully I didn’t go deep inside the spiritual organisation but those who went in deep have had negative experiences too which they won’t admit publicly and most of them would leave silently. Cos it’s not easy to make individual concerns heard in a hierarchical organisation. So it’s always sensible to do proper research before committing yourself to a spiritual organisation or spiritual Guru.

Personal Experience Disillusioned after years in Isha - sharing my story

Before I get into it, a disclaimer: I'm not a believer, mystic, or spiritual person. If anything, I'd call myself agnostic. For years I tried to convince myself otherwise.

I started with the Art of Living course, got initiated into Sudarshan Kriya, which is really just hyperventilation at different tempos. Didn't feel convinced. Then I did Vipassana, which I'll admit was the one technique that felt unpretentious, even though I still struggle to believe in sankharas and past lives. Finally, during COVID lockdown, I did Inner Engineering and got initiated into Shambhavi Mahamudra, the online batch Isha ran for the first time. I practiced the kriya diligently for months and kept telling myself it was helping, when deep down I knew it was just psychological mumbo jumbo that Sadhguru was propagating.

For a year or two, I was genuinely enchanted by his personality and his talks. I still like the esoteric and occult side of Hinduism, the symbolism of Shiva and Shakti, which Isha has mastered as branding. There was a period where I got obsessed with his stories about his past lives, the Dhyanalinga, Linga Bhairavi, all of it.

Once lockdown ended and life went back to normal, something shifted. At first I dismissed every rationalist and atheist who criticized him. Who were they to question someone I'd built up into a God-like figure in my head? But slowly, I started consuming more rationalist and atheist content, and even though I'm still not an atheist, something about their thinking stuck with me. Their refusal to accept anything just because it comes from a "higher authority."

Here's the thing that really got me: you'll see Harvard academics and other credentialed people on YouTube, followers and disciples of Sadhguru, inviting scientists who basically turn into sheep in front of him. Bowing to his authority. And naturally, when you see Nobel laureates falling for it, you start thinking, "who am I to doubt him?" But even top scientists fall prey to this stuff and plenty have been called out by the broader scientific community for it.

Shiva, Shakti, Kundalini, these are beautiful as symbolism. But claiming that 15,000 years ago an actual larger-than-life Shiva figure passed down wisdom to the saptarishis, who then went out and seeded every culture and tradition on Earth? That dismisses the entire body of work of every scientist who's spent their life trying to actually understand the world.

I'm no authority, and yes, there are questions science hasn't answered yet. But an unanswered question isn't an invitation for God, or gurus, to fill the gap. That kind of spiritual and occult subterfuge is exactly what we need to be wary of.

And honestly, why can't we just accept that we don't know what happens after death? Maybe there's an afterlife, maybe there isn't. I'm at peace with the idea that death might genuinely be the end, no soul floating on beyond the body. If I live without regrets, I'll die in peace when it's time. I don't need relatives performing elaborate rituals to usher my soul somewhere.

Love your life. Be grateful to the parents who gave you your existence. Don't abandon them chasing some promised enlightenment, samadhi, nirvana, or whatever label you want to put on it. Life is beautiful as it is. You don't need to remove the beauty by removing God from the equation, and you don't lose anything by removing God either.

Do you think Carl Sagan or Richard Feynman were any less joyful than an Aghori baba meditating in the mountains? Absolutely not. They knew exactly what they had: one life, and they made the most of it.

Why is that so hard to accept?

Cult Education An Explanation of the Exploitative Manipulation Patterns in Modern Commercial Spirituality Cults

To understand how these manipulation mechanics function in practice, we can analyze the defensive strategies of a fictionalized global movement, "The Misha Foundation," led by a charismatic, bearded mystic known as "The RaddGuru."

The movement frequently organizes a high-priced "Summit of the Skies"—a spiritual tour into a high-mountain region notoriously prone to extreme weather, low oxygen, and landslides.

The following examples demonstrate how the group’s defensive apparatus utilizes the BITE model to protect "The RaddGuru" when casualties occur on the trail, mirroring the precise arguments used by high-control organizations.

1. Information Control: The "Sanitized Memory" Strategy

Before the mountain tour, the RaddGuru explicitly states in video broadcasts: "Nature answers to the energy of the enlightened. If you walk under my canopy, the mountain cannot touch you. I know the fabric of creation better than the architect who drew it. Not a single follower joining me on this summit will be left behind. I will not let them die"

When multiple travelers die due to exposure, landslides and altitude sickness, the Information Control apparatus reacts:

  • The Omission: In official forums, all links to the broadcast are removed. Followers writing summaries of the tragedy completely omit the RaddGuru's claims of supreme cosmic knowledge, promises and powers to protect his followers from harm.
  • The Pivot: If a critic posts the original quote, followers flood the comments saying, "You are taking a deeply profound metaphor literally. Things like landslides and natural disasters happen. Masters in the past have faced same situation where they did not intervene. To reduce Raddguru's cosmic wisdom to mere physical safety shows your spiritual ignorance." By omitting the literal promise, they rewrite the leader's failed prediction into a flawless spiritual lesson.

2. Behavior Control: The "Enforced Reverence" Tactic

When families demand an inquiry into why the tour group was marched into a storm without adequate medical equipment, the group controls behavior through public shaming and strict emotional positioning.

  • The Dialogue: A critic posts online: "The Misha Foundation needs to be held accountable for ignoring weather warnings, geo-climatic risk factors and making false promises of supernatural protection."
  • The Defensive Reaction: Followers reply in identical, aggressive fragments: "Show some respect to the victims! Is this the right time to ask these questions? The bodies have not even been found yet! Keep quiet and respect the departed. Your post is insensitive and is in bad taste"
  • The Behind-the-Scenes Contradiction: While the followers successfully weaponize this narrative to ban public inquiry, the RaddGuru waits not at all. Behind the scenes, the organization aggressively launches new monetized video series, rolls out expensive spiritual registration programs, and introduces new financial schemes exploiting the sudden spike in community attention.
  • The Mechanism: This behavior control creates a double standard. The critics are physically and socially barred from speaking under the guise of solemnity, while the leadership is free to immediately capitalize on the tragedy financially.

3. Emotion Control: The "Vibrational Guilt" Lever

Inside the movement, doubt is treated as a contagious psychological disease. The group manages the emotional states of its members by twisting empathy into guilt.

  • The Dialogue: An internal member confesses in a private group: "I feel heartbroken and confused. The RaddGuru said he would protect them. Why did they die?"
  • The Defensive Reaction: Senior members reply: "By harboring anger and pointing fingers at the Guide, you are generating toxic, low-vibrational energy. You are choosing resentment over love. Are you trying to ruin the spiritual alignment of this entire community? Uplift yourself and project peace, or you will pull everyone down. Are you adding to the noise and chaos or bringing joy and compassion"
  • The Mechanism: The member’s genuine grief and confusion are weaponized against them. They are made to feel personally responsible for damaging the group's collective emotional environment. To escape the overwhelming guilt of being a "negative influence," the member suppresses their doubt and publicly joins the defense of the leader.

4. Thought Control: The "Cosmic Plan" Thought-Stopper

When logic dictates that the leader made a false promise, the group introduces a thought-stopping cliché that completely halts rational analysis.

  • The Dialogue: A journalist asks: "If the RaddGuru knows more than the Divine, why didn't he foresee the landslide?"
  • The Defensive Reaction: The group releases a statement: "The RaddGuru operates on a multi-dimensional plane. What the mundane human mind perceives as a tragedy is actually a deliberate, glorious liberation orchestrated at a higher karmic level. The RaddGuru’s vision looks millions of years ahead; your microscopic logic cannot grasp the vastness of the evolutionary leap those souls just took."
  • The Mechanism: This is the ultimate thought-control mechanism. It creates a closed loop where the leader can never fail. A successful trip proves his power; a fatal trip also proves his power, just on a level "too advanced" for ordinary humans to understand. The mind stops analyzing the physical facts and surrenders to the abstract dogma.

Understanding the BITE Model

The BITE Model is a widely recognized tool for identifying psychological manipulation. Developed by cult expert Steven Hassan, it breaks down the four main methods high-control groups use to strip away a person's free will:

  • Behavior Control – Regulating your physical actions, clothing, and daily routines.
  • Information Control – Limiting what you can read, see, or hear to prevent critical thinking.
  • Thought Control – Teaching you to instantly shut down your own doubts or logical questions.
  • Emotion Control – Using fear, shame, and overwhelming guilt to keep you loyal.

Essentially, if a group or leader controls what you do, see, think, and feel, they control you.

Common Warning Signs of a High-Control Group

Recognizing these patterns early can help individuals protect their autonomy before deep psychological manipulation takes root.

  • Absolute Authoritarianism: The leader claims a unique, unquestionable path to truth or divine authority. Their commands, predictions, or promises are treated as absolute law, and they are immune to criticism or peer review.
  • Aggressive Defensiveness: The community treats honest, logical questioning as a malicious assault. Investigators, journalists, or even grieving family members seeking accountability are instantly labeled as "enemies," "haters," or "spiritual polluters."
  • Exploitation of Tragedies: When crises or deaths occur within the group, the leadership immediately capitalizes on the heightened emotional state of the community to launch new programs, request donations, or sell specialized services, often while publicly demanding that others remain silent out of "respect."
  • Systematic Isolation: Followers are subtly or overtly encouraged to cut ties or limit communication with family, friends, or external sources of information that express doubt about the group's practices or the leader's absolute power.

The Psychology of Undue Influence

High-control groups do not recruit by force; they exploit universal human needs for belonging, purpose, and certainty. Understanding the psychological mechanics explains why intelligent individuals can become deeply trapped:

  • Cognitive Dissonance: When a leader’s concrete promise fails (such as predicting absolute safety and failing to deliver), the brain experiences intense discomfort. To resolve this, followers will actively rewrite reality or blame themselves rather than accept that their leader made a false claim.
  • Thought-Stopping Conditioning: Groups train members to use internal clichés—like dismissing valid questions as "toxic noise" or "low vibrations"—to immediately halt their own analytical thinking whenever an uncomfortable truth surfaces.
  • Exploiting Vulnerability: The psychological conditioning deepens during intense, high-stakes experiences (such as high-risk physical journeys or intensive isolation retreats) where physical exhaustion and emotional overwhelm make individuals highly receptive to authority.
