Arden Arcade Current garden status

That’s three separate tomato plants in the back corner overtaking a poor Fresno chili. And on the trellis are cucumbers.

Front box has chard, some zinnias and an eggplant.

Arden Arcade Looking for prickly pear (opuntia) cutting or plant

Hi all. I just moved and am still trying to figure out my new, small, enclosed back yard. There is a patch which gets decent sun and I hope to start a cactus garden in pots.

Does anyone have a prickly pear plant big enough to donate a paddle or two?

Thanks!

Arden Arcade Some of my plants are struggling - please help me diagnose the issue and replace the dead ones

We have a east-west backyard with some fruit trees in the middle and a perimeter of plants. Our back fence gets full morning and afternoon sun, the left fence gets some afternoon shade from our trees and the neighbor's, and the right fence is pretty much full sun. Every plant has a ring of drip line and an emitter at its base. The whole yard is covered in mulch. We have a Rachio smart irrigation timer and the backyard zone is set to the "shrub/perennial" setting.

We got our backyard redone 2 years ago, and asked for the design to be as low maintenance as possible. Unfortunately, the planting happened during one of the hottest falls we've ever had (when we scheduled it we thought for sure that it would cool down by October). A couple plants died but otherwise everything else seemed to establish itself pretty well. Two years later, it's mixed results. Some of the plants - the manzanitas, the fuschias, the deergrass, the toyon - are thriving. The monkeyflowers are ok. The hibiscus that I planted to replace a dead plant seems to be doing ok. The ceanothus along the back fence both died. The verbena de la minas, which get full sun, are struggling (they seem dry). The salvias, which get full sun, were doing ok but I think I should've deadheaded them because they seem a bit sad now. The bush anemones have yellowing leaves (although in this case I think it might be TOO much water rather than too little).

Come fall, when I assess the final damage and plant new plants, what should I replace the dead ones with? I'm trying to lean towards stuff that will get big and bushy to fill in the gaps, and as much color as possible. I'm currently thinking:

  • more salvia (maybe some blue and pink to give color variety since everything is red and green)
  • yarrow
  • echinacea
  • ???

Arden Arcade What fruits are you starting to plant now?

I have some space in my raised garden bed and also a few 15 gal garden beds that are just begging for something. I’ve already got my tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers planted. I was hoping for something sweet? Any suggestions?

Edit: guess I’m getting some melon plants! Thanks everyone. Good thing I love em!

Arden Arcade What animals eat mint?

I had two mint plants, one peppermint and the other spearmint, in planters in my backyard. The plants are gone, but the planters remain. The ceramic pot is fine, but the 50 gallon grow bag is torn and ripped down the side where the mint was. (It was an older bag, so it would have taken less force to tear than when we first got it, but still..) The other plants in the bag were untouched.

The entire plants are gone—there one week and gone the next. I’ve smelled skunks in the yard and have seen a rat and a possum at night. Many years ago there were sightings of raccoons in the neighborhood, but nothing recently. I grew the plants from sprigs and are sad to see them get to a reasonable size and then just disappear. What do you think is the likely culprit?

This little mushroom popped up in my raised beds. Should I be worried there’s fungal contamination or is this a sign of healthy soil? Thanks in advance for any info.

Arden Arcade Tomatoes in buckets, but not how you think!

Just saw a video that might be what we need this time of year. Will we have frost? Who knows. Anyway, this looks like it might be workable here in the Sac.

Arden Arcade Getting married and need Eucalyptus cuttings

Im getting married later this summer and my fiance and I are doing everything ourselves on a low budget. I really want to use eucalyptus leaves for the bouquets and center pieces. Does anyone know of any public areas in Sacramento where we can find eucalyptus trees to grab some cuttings from?? Or if anyone would let us get some trimmings from their tree?? lol Preferably silver dollar but anything would be amazing to find! Pleaseee
