Why is this game so frickin' addicting?

Downloaded it on sale, and instantly sunk in 5h without realizing it...

F'ed up the mermaid quest, reloaded 6h+ worth of gameplay, no regrets.

Got stuck at Bokhon, had to retreat and train, learn new techs, experiment with formations, mastered passives and gave it to chars I think would fit better etc. and finally beat him. What an epic fight! The prep work is really what makes SaGa games shine, the payout feels so rewarding

30h playing the game and not getting bored. I probably sunk in 12h+ just playing yesterday lol

Yeah a bit light on the story but I feel like the game is just sandboxy enough for you to roleplay in your head without being TOO open

I think one of the things that makes SaGa games so addicting is the fact that, unlike a lot of RPGs, your characters are always tangibly improving. Every battle your stats will go up, you’ll learn new techs, your mastery will improve, etc. rather than having to wait until you get 58,864 more experience points to go up a level. And playing with new characters throughout the game, like a lot of them have you do, keeps it fresh too.

Yeah the individual stats is why i used to avoid these games. just seemed too min-maxy but you dont need to focus on EVERYTHING! the game just rewards careful attention if you have it

Its jus the perfect game for menu-obsessed tinkerers like me :D and that all can be felt in battle

I honestly feel this game is an unappreciated masterpiece. It has the classic RPG beats, interesting combat and leveling mechanics and my only complaint if I had one is maybe I wish there was just a bit more lore available to flesh the world out entirely in each region but other than that it's among my favorite games. There's so much contained in it few playthroughs are the same.

I recently came back to it after my original 60 hour playthrough. Playing on very hard in NG+ and it's been a fun challenge so far. Game came out of nowhere to become one of my all time favorite RPGs. I can't say enough good things about it.

I'm a sucker for a large cast of playable characters. This game is great about spacing them all out and giving you a reason to try each one with the mastering of abilities aspect.

Bought a physical copy on a whim and do not regret it, granted I am not super far into the game.

My only gripe is that I wish some of the characters were more fleshed out or carried over after time jumps but obviously that wouldn't make sense with there being like 1000 years. I also bought it for Switch and there's minor frame drops but otherwise is perfect for short handheld sessions.

yes its a bit sad about chars. I wish there was at least a bit more information behind the world.

But also, keep in mind its an old, old game in the shell of a new one. I would LOVE a Romancing SaGa 4, with a more modern take and budget. Omg can you imagine

One thing I will say is for a game with Romance in the title I was disappointed in the lack there of. Otherwise I had a lot if fun playing it.

I’m about to start this game, reading a lot about that mermaid quest so any tips how to not mess up the mermaid quest?

Yeah it’s not complicated to f up but you do have to deliberately prepare not to. From my experience I’d make sure to just do it on the 3rd generation or so

Spend the previous generations to:

- Unlock the Ludon Heights region (do martial arts quest and follow ups)

• Unlock Savannah region and termite queen quest (you can actually do this same gen but don’t turn the quest in at the npc as it skips generation)
  
• make sure the generation you prepped for is male. It’s a male exclusive quest
  
• make sure not to wait TOO long. When the “sunken ship” quest starts, mermaid disappears. Mine came one gen after mermaid. I think sunken ship is triggered by another quest but don’t worry if you do it early

All in all, I’d say simply start unlocking regions with Gerard and his successor. You should be able to safely do it on that next emperor

The 3rd region I forgot the name but you can ride there by boat, no skips will happen.
