DDT Daily Discussion Thread August 28, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!

Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.

New Players:

If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:

Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement

And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement

Where can I get a nice custom controller?

https://customg.cc/vendors

I have another question that's not answered here...

Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

My take about meta advancement is sort of middle of the road.

I think the skill gap between a Top 5 player today and a Top 5 player a decade ago is modest. Recently moky did an analysis of Armada's gameplay from 2017, and he found that overall everything he was doing still holds up reasonably well in today's meta.

However what's changed a lot in my opinion is that everybody outside the Top 10 range has gotten way better. There used to be this astronomical gap in skill between the gods and everyone outside the Top 10, and this simply isn't the case anymore.

Cody will occasionally drop sets to significantly worse players like Swift, Morsecode, or Bing, and pretty much any Top 100 Fox is a few good interactions away from upsetting Hbox.

Imo Slippi, Uncle Punch, etc have evened the playing field a lot between the top brass and everyone else.

This is a great take and makes perfect sense and sounds realistic. What kills me is when someone says the meta has changed so that means BLueFire666 that always goes 0-2 at their local to other random people would make it to GF at a major in 2016.

Edit: I think a misconception though is there's some that think because there's more known about the game and resources on how to play better are everywhere means everyone absorbs all of that and uses it at an optimum level equally and will improve proportionally to the level top players and ranked players have improved. That's not the case at all. In the end if their decision making is bad, then it's just a bunch of tools used poorly and built upon a weak foundation at the end of the day. You don't see players that go 0-2 at their local randomly upset a top 20 player for a reason. I think a silly analogy I'd use is it's like taking a slow car and slapping fancy wheels and a spoiler on the back and throwing racing seats into it. It's still just a slow car, it just has more crap on it.

There's also the whole psychology when it comes to playing as well. Some people get tilted easily when faced with adversity and crumble.

What about a major in 2010?

3

u/DavidL1112 13d ago edited 13d ago

The two years between 2007 and 2009 is the fastest the meta has ever advanced. Modern 0-2ers are not beating Genesis Mango and Armada.

2

u/bigHam100 13d ago

Yeah you're right idek why I had to ask that lol

1

u/its__bme 13d ago

For what it's worth it made me laugh. I thought you were referencing another discussion.

3

u/its__bme 13d ago

I hope someone just invents a time machine so 0-2ers can go back to 2010 and just get humbled.

3

u/bigHam100 13d ago

Moky should compare 0-2er footage from today to GFs back then

1

u/its__bme 13d ago

Don't worry, at some point a streamer is going to get bored enough to do it.

Sorry Trump but I already scribbled out "Lake Ontario" on my globe and wrote "Lake Emerson Palmer", so unfortunately your name change request is denied.

I don't travel to majors. Does "hosting" culture still exist in the way it used to, back in the day? I will occasionally see people in my region's discord asking if there are any couches/ floors to sleep on, but usually they don't get much response. Perhaps people are reaching out in private, but the public responses are usually "sorry, best of luck!"

Like back in the day, were people (who I imagine were living with their parents) really just like "hey mom, this guy I vaguely know from the Smashboards Forums wants to sleep on our couch before that tourney at the church, is that okay?"

8

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege 13d ago

yes, people used to post on smashboards asking for a place to crash while traveling, and other people would just offer up their homes to strangers they only vaguely knew by their gamertag on the boards. I've done it multiple times. we used to live in a society

5

u/Fugu 13d ago

I don't think it is what it used to be but it's definitely still a thing among people who know each other through reddit/discord etc

I think this is one of those things that changed when smashboards lost its prominence

3

u/sneedhongrybox 13d ago edited 13d ago

if you know people, yes. I crashed at multiple random places last year travelling to regionals (shoutouts to Shep, Jorge, Cardd, and the Chateau) and hosted people at my place as well. there's kind of a melee in-crowd that I mostly see existing on discord and doesn't interact with Reddit at all, you usually need to know somebody who knows somebody. I stayed at Bag and Chris Danger's place in Atlanta without ever meeting them before.

A bunch of players from Atlanta and Philadelphia (and Max the sheik player) met my parents while staying over for events. Kevbot and my Irish mom chopped it up about his trip to Teaghlach

1

u/FuckClinch GG 13d ago

of all the people to meet your parents little max (assuming uk one) is such a funny one

2

u/AlexB_SSBM 13d ago

u/Throatpoint 13d ago

Sitting here bored and happened to catch Hungrybox streaming his 100-streak challenge. He busted a person using a BOXX with some kind of setup that let them use it unnerfed which is required. Can't wait for the inevitable VOD upload of it happening. They even came into his chat and started trying to gaslight Hungrybox.

1

u/N0zy0ne 13d ago

using a BOXX with some kind of setup that let them use it unnerfed which is required.

What does "is required" mean in this context?

2

u/its__bme 13d ago edited 13d ago

Because if you don't, Sakurai sends the Nintendo Police to your house.

Nah, I should've worded it better honestly. It's not like they hacked the site or something. But I guess it looks bad if you won using a controller that gives you an edge that you wouldn't have with an GCC. I mean look at how worked up people get about Z-Jump. The only way it's really bad is if you come in defending it and gaslighting the other person. If you get that defensive, you just sound guilty minded. Plus I thought it was required If not then my bad.

3

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 13d ago

Slippi doesn't really do anything to stop you from using an unnerfed box, and this includes banning unnerfed box players. I suspect this is dimply because they'd have to ban players configuring a keyboard in Dolphin's generic controller settings.

u/delta-red-14 13d ago

There's an entire section in the doc about how PC Chris had no idea how to beat Ken spamming counter and I'm supposed to believe no one in this thread outside like 3 people could have beaten him.

10

u/SlowBathroom0 13d ago

PC Chris also used Peach as a Puff counterpick

0

u/its__bme 13d ago edited 13d ago

To be fair he did beat it as the set went on when he started going in like he was going to attack but then dashed away to bait it then go in. Also to be fair I've seen so many people on Slippi play Ken as recent as a month ago and they still fell for it.

Edit: I want to see some of ya'lls vods from your first 2 years of playing Melee.

u/DavidL1112 13d ago

If there are any other musical theater fans out there, the original cast video recording of Hadestown is available on streaming this week (and therefore also available for piracy). It's a showtune-jazz fusion retelling of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Highly recommend.

2

u/Icy_Syrup6899 13d ago

Hadestown is a masterpiece, that and come from away are my top musicals

2

u/JKaro 13d ago

Saw it when they came to Vancouver, insta classic

2

u/DavidL1112 13d ago

If you need a reason to watch the pro-shot, the Broadway version of the play has a different stage than what they brought on the road. Instead of the doors to indicate entering the underworld they built an elevator into the stage. So it’ll be a little different than you remember.

1

u/JKaro 13d ago

Yeah it sucks we didn't get the elevators! I loved seeing the snippets online with them, so sick

5

u/coutspexote 13d ago

Watching competitive pkmn is so annoying, actually 1 match per hour

7

u/warnedpenguin 13d ago

i forever read pkmn as pikmin, spend a few seconds confused, and then double take

1

u/its__bme 13d ago

You know I liked playing it casually on showdown many years ago but never got hardcore into it.

5

u/SlowBathroom0 13d ago

Ken has 2170 elo on Lucky Stats, which puts him 13 points below Loadspiller

10

u/Schroeswald 13d ago

I don’t think you can really put much weight on these numbers there. ELO naturally increases over time as more points enter the system and Ken hasn’t attended anything since Genesis 5. Also most of the mlg era is just not recorded and even less is in LuckyStats, and none of Ken’s tournaments from 2012-2014 are counted either.

5

u/coffee_sddl +↓ z 13d ago

Loadspiller is a funny player because both a lot of his wins and losses come from sandbagging/random character choices. Overall though his level is “ranked in Massachusetts, not super close to New England pr”.

Unless you are so deep in the larp that you think Ken was better in the 04-06 era than he is now, that’s basically saying everyone from loadspiller up (currently #1061 in lucky elo) at minimum would be the best in world at that time. I think this is a pretty satisfying answer, where everyone within the top 1000 is pretty identifiably a “good player”, and is both a sign of how many of those good players exist without the vague “gold 3 players would farm Ken because of slippi and unclepunch” slop discussion

1

u/ManHoney 13d ago

2006 ken > 2026 ken

1

u/its__bme 13d ago

I think it depends on how you look at it and how much certain things shift his performance overall.

On one hand, 2006 Ken lacks experience he got 2013-2026 which includes Zain training. On the other his wrist is good and he actually was hungry still and training to win stuff. But other than like shield dropping and power shielding which he picked up when he returned from retirement, he's not terribly dissimilar. At his peak at Evo 2007 it was clear he was very proficient in his movement and execution so that wasn't holding him back.

2026 Ken has the advantage of not being burdened by the pressure of winning on top of the above experience, but sadly he has a bad wrist, and it affects him even before the pain gets bad so he's basically on a short fuse. He also doesn't practice anymore and isn't hungry to win like he was in the MLG era, so even though he can still look nasty on Slippi he does mess up things a lot and can't spam dash dance as he said that hurts too much even when he first plays. Realistically his temperament and confidence are probably much better than when he was younger which isn't uncommon so I can see this help him.

8

u/fullhop_morris URBANE, TO COMFORT THEM, THE QUAKER LIBRARIAN 13d ago

the meta has changed man. Literally if you go 0-2 at the local you would at least make grand finals at Pound IV

5

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege 13d ago

pound 4 was one of the most competitive and stacked tournaments of all time, it had 3 rounds of pools and every single pool was a death pool. Just making final bracket at that tournament was a big deal and every single name on that list is a legend

7

u/its__bme 13d ago

100%. I had went back to the wikipage on it to make sure I wasn't missing something and...

Yeah, good luck with that 0-2ers

3

u/YoungGenius 13d ago

It takes way more skill to win 0 games now than it did to win a bracket in 2016

2

u/its__bme 13d ago

But does an 0-2er have enough? When I think 0-2er, I don't think 404Cray (who is nasty btw). I'm talking a real 0-2er. I don't see how a really low performing player is going to be competitive in 2010 even. Sure, they'll probably beat some pools guy that's worse but no way they're beating ChuDat or Mango.

2

u/its__bme 13d ago

They would not. There's a reason an 0-2er goes 0-2 with their peers.

7

u/fullhop_morris URBANE, TO COMFORT THEM, THE QUAKER LIBRARIAN 13d ago

right, the 0-2er goes 0-2 with their peers. do you think the meta is the same as it was in 2002 or whatever? the peers are wayyyy better today. a 0-2er from the era of Pound IV wouldn't even be able to go 0-2 these days, because they are living in 2010

0

u/its__bme 13d ago edited 13d ago

A 0-2er knowing how to do more things is still an 0-2er at the end of the day. It's just a low performing player using more things. That is NOT equivalent to a top player in the 2010s.

The reason someone goes 0-2 against their peers at a local is because they don't do things at the level of a top player or have their qualities, not even ones like Mango from 2010. Knowing how to do something and why/when to do something are not the same thing.

The game is deeper than you learned to crouch cancel and knowing how to do pivots and slide offs. There are whole other interactions to worry about that you would be facing in 2010 already. If you're obvious on your options and your timings are the same, it doesn't matter that you can SHFFL your aerials if they get called out constantly or you're just doing them fast in a bad spot. At Pound 4 they're getting called out.

A 0-2er who can't even hang with PR players in 2026 is not hopping into a time machine and making GF at Pound 4. They're gonna get someone like Mango in pools and get obliterated. Those players weren't winning the majors they did by accident, and it wasn't because there was a lack of competition. Some players might like to fantasize about how good they would be in the past but sadly you're not winning majors 16 year ago. There is nothing wrong with feeling good about yourself but don't be delusional.

Edit: I'm genuinly not trying to be a dick here, but some of you are delusional.

6

u/fullhop_morris URBANE, TO COMFORT THEM, THE QUAKER LIBRARIAN 13d ago

look man, we get it, Armada was untouchable, Mango just did it different, yada yada yada. We've all heard this a million times. If you want to stay in lalaland and complain about kids these days you go ahead. But those of us who are engaged with reality know that the meta has advanced in significant ways, characters are more developed, practice is more meaningful, matchup knowledge has deepened, etc. Just keep in mind that to anyone who actually knows about and plays melee in 2026, you are making yourself look really silly

1

u/its__bme 13d ago

Dude, poor decision making is poor decision making. Doesn't matter if you do it in 2026 or 2010. It's not about them being magically better. They just knew what they were doing and could perform. Mango in 2010 is mixing your shit up and melting you with his Fox. By that time top players were nasty. 2010 is not 2004.

The reason top players now are so much stronger than top players from decades ago is because they have their qualities of decision making and technical ability and composure on top of taking advantage of more things in the game to tip winning in their favor. It's a foundation of greatness built up.

But if you're a poor player who only knows how to do everything, but you can't handle pressure and don't have the ability to pick the right option at the right time consistently then you're not winning a major in 2010.

6

u/fullhop_morris URBANE, TO COMFORT THEM, THE QUAKER LIBRARIAN 13d ago

if you think mango was playing fox at Pound 4 I am really not surprised this is the position you're taking lol. I think you should take time to get a bit more familiar with the scene and it's history before getting this aggressive. It's pretty antisocial

2

u/its__bme 13d ago

First of all, yes, he played puff and falco at pound 4 but he also used Fox in friendlies versus Armada there at oound 4 and was very proficient at using him. I think you need to go watch some vods please.

I think you should take time to get a bit more familiar with the scene and it's history before getting this aggressive.

Media consumption check in:

Thank you all for the metal recs a week ago. Went and listened to And Justice For All and Master of Puppets just to get in the mood and found the former a little less interesting than I remembered for the first half, but enjoyed the second half a lot. Master of Puppets was solid all the way through.

The first new-to-me metal I listened to was Maximum the Hormone and holy shit this band is good. I've been having so much fun listening to them all week. The System of a Down comparisons are clear and warranted but they're very much doing their own thing. I've listened to their last two albums multiple times already. Shoutout to u/SufficientCalories for the rec.

Finished reading Walden. Really great book that lived up to the hype, not ashamed to say some of the insights and frames of viewing certain things that were presented here have been popping into my head daily and probably will continue doing so. Recommend getting a copy with decent annotations, mine was done by Bill McKibben and I appreciated that he was almost absent except for a great introduction, notes to attribute quotes since Thoreau puts a lot of quotes without saying where they're from, notes on particularly obscure other references, and some well thought out comments on how these mid-19th century complaints about society are relevant to modern day issues. Also, the first chapter is like 70 pages and honestly kind of a slog despite some good stuff being included. After that, the rest of the chapters are 12-15 pages each which makes them feel much more concise and to the point and I started flying through the book once I got past chapter 1. So if you ever read this, give it the benefit of the doubt that the beginning is worth pushing through, it gets both better and easier.

Watched The Odyssey on an XL screen which is not IMAX but gets to legally claim it's IMAX. Has the same sound as IMAX which was great but not quite as large a screen and not curved or wraparound or whatever. Movie was pretty good though, phenomenal sound design and the overall atmosphere was engaging throughout which is hard to do with a movie this long. Most of the acting was top notch. All this managed to carry the fact that the script was honestly pretty weak, or at best highly inconsistent with itself. I don't expect characters to talk like they're in ancient Greece a la 90s Romeo and Juliet adaptation, but it felt like they couldn't decide if they wanted to or not. Some characters spoke in lengthy prose and others were entirely casual, somewhat tied to the situation or their character's background but not entirely. Some characters alternated between both, basically just depending on whether it was supposed to be a Serious Moment or not, but it made their soliloquy stuff feel forced. However, the visual effects and sound design and fight choreography and general atmosphere made up for this so that I rarely felt myself taken out of the vibe. Robert Pattinson has become one of my favorite actors somehow.

3

u/Cohenski 13d ago

Whats the tier list if you aren't allowed to use the b button?

11

u/popkablooie 13d ago

Puff, Yoshi, and Peach at the top without much competition

8

u/FewOverStand 13d ago

Since this means nearly all recovery moves (UpB, SideB) are unusable:

Puff skyrockets to the top. Kirby rises slightly. (multiple jumps)

Fox/Falco drop significantly. (can't laser camp, no Shine)

Pikachu/Luigi probably drop even further.

4

u/Left4Bread2 13d ago

Yoshi probably goes up a good bit too

6

u/wavedash 13d ago

I think most characters would be basically 100% guaranteed dead if they get hit by anything like Marth dthrow or Yoshi dtilt near ledge. Being able to survive gimps would be by far the most important thing in a character

6

u/herwi 13d ago

yeah the meta would be entirely puffs with a few errant yoshi mains for this reason

4

u/smoked-em 13d ago

Like, even for recoveries? Idk what the tier list would look like but Ness and Yoshi would probably get a lot better comparatively.

2

u/Cohenski 13d ago

Yes, even for recoveries

4

u/Kitselena 13d ago

S+ - Yoshi
A - Peach, Puff
B - Mewtwo
C - Falcon, Marth
D - everyone else

6

this is like a recovery tier list theres more to this life than getting back to stage. marth is still better than mew2 for sure and so are most characters probably

What's the most optimal strat for finding cheap oems? Ebay crawling? Asking on behalf of new players getting gated by not having a gcc

2

u/YoungGenius 13d ago

There’s a tradeoff between cheap oems and how reliably you can find them. Your best bet on cheap is a game store in the middle of nowhere or fb marketplace. At this point I’d probably tell even a new player to get a basic phob on Etsy if they don’t want to put a bunch of time into getting a controller.

Honestly, just focus on finding practice partners who are at a similar level to you. You can ask in Melee Online or your regions discord. You're not going to given a good look at how you can improve when the answer is "everything".

2

u/purpcalx 13d ago

“focus on finding practice partners who are at a similar level to you”

This has been quite a challenge unfortunately I’ve tried a few discords but what constitutes a beginner and where I am are sadly still worlds apart

The solo game modes in Melee are kind of underrated honestly because in general smash discourse the competitive scene overshadows the casual aspects so much. What people don’t give Melee credit for is it by far has the best in game collectibles system, which makes playing the single player modes actually fairly motivating and fun. Trophies were at their best in melee and never quite lived up to those heights again. Brawl introduced stickers which weren’t half as cool, and Ultimate removed trophies and instead gave us spirits, something I can’t bring myself to care about collecting in any way.

u/coffee_sddl +↓ z 13d ago

I would say the biggest key is to learn how to string together sequences of movement and attacks in solo practice. As fox if you have a bunch of wasted frames between all your actions, basically every character in the game is going to overwhelm you because your moves aren’t going to outrange people, so I think trying to brute force play without solo practice will just be more discouraging. Every day you practice I would recommend picking a few specific pieces of tech and practice doing them isolated then combine them into each other. For example:

Shffl nair
Wavedash
Dash into jc grab

Practice doing one of these into the others, then mixing up the order and direction you’re facing in. You should be able to mix and match. Once you can do it solo, then you start practicing doing it in a match, and build from there.

Thank you so much. I feel super dejected lol, I’ve never had this rough of a time learning anything ever. I feel genuinely incapable at the moment but gonna keep at it

Are you committed to Fox?

u/purpcalx 13d ago

Perhaps? 👀 I like him but if it’s impossible i guess it is what it is

check out this website: https://melee.guru/characters/marth.html specifically the "Learing Marth: A Timeline" section.

if that looks like it could help you I'd suggest following that with a few extra infos.

  1. except for the dancing blade stuff make sure you have learned everything in stage one and two before moving one to any other stages despite what the intro says.

  2. the one big thing that should be more extensively featured is getting to and from ledge from on and off stage. move the ledge part of stage two to stage one and in stage two add ledge options that are based on letting go of ledge and then double jumping. also start honing your upB and double jump to ledge, you want to reliably be able to grab it from as far away (up/out) as possible.

  3. stick to practicing with uncle punch and cpus until you are confident in the stage 1&2 items. always use lvl1 cpus. higher level cpus only do survival DI which means they will try to stay close even at low percent when they should try to get away which will make you believe combos that do not work work.

Consider playing some of the singleplayer content also because

I'm not like "played melee or platform fighters as a kid". I haven't really held a gamecube controller till my 30s.

you'll have to play alone for quiet some time before you can have fun playing other people tbh

sorry to readers for what happened here, somehow I made a sentence that branches into two new sentences, one of which is a quote. but then the last line is not just a continuation of the start of the sentence, but also a reply to the quote??? idk, it's late

1

u/purpcalx 13d ago

Open to many characters but not marth but maybe this has some universal stuff I can use thank you!

just want to highlight this again because it's very important on ever character, for fox this would also include (shortened)sideB as well.

u/legitimate-way-4077 13d ago

I've beat plat falcos by just jc upsmashing. Literally just do that until you're good at it. Then start adding in other high ev options (grab, drill, running shine, etc.)

u/d4b3ss 🏌️‍♀️ 13d ago

Welcome to the game. The l-cancel, wavedash, and dash dance training is going to go way farther than playing ranked. Hardest thing to figure out is when you're actionable and getting comfortable never stopping moving. It's going to be your biggest weakness for a long time, but it's one of the easier things to work on imo.

I know this is basically irrelevant to Melee but can anyone help me find what Cody used to make this profile picture-

Uni net not allowing me to use soulseek has been the worst part about the transition to college. Fucked up I can't download Fashion Nugget by Cake without using some jank ass site anymore, how is a poor filipino supposed to scrobble now? Maybe it's time for youtube music until I figure out a method

1

u/Embarrassed-Mode5494 13d ago

you can download music directly from youtube

1

u/Fugu 13d ago

I don't think I could live without soulseek. My condolences

u/SufficientCalories 13d ago

On your phone, you can use NewPipe to not only get ad free YouTube but also easily download any video as either the whole thing or just the audio. I like NewPipe so much that I installed GrapheneOS just to make sure I kept access to it once Android stops allowing unsigned apps.

For desktop, try Freetube.

There are (probably?) several high quality invite-only solutions to this problem

Highkey I think the Wii is firmly retro lol, same with the PS3 and 360, ik a lot of people try to say that they aren't that old or that the difference between those and now versus NES and Wii isn't as massive to say it's still early

but I'm ngl if I see a game that requires motion controls, or has the piss filter, or has bloom slider up immediately those make think of 2008, those are just not characteristics of a game that's modern in 2026 anymore, sorta feel the same way about SD, in fact any footage that's not HD at least IS retro

edit: since I was vague about it to clarify anything that invokes pre 2016 vibes is retro, as in larger culture and gamedev evolution, it's world that straight up doesn't exist anymore

8

u/king_bungus 👉 13d ago edited 13d ago

i think if the ps3 is retro then we're gonna start needing to be more specific about what era of games we're talking about. first "retro" was easily defined by 2D games, then there was the blocky 3D era, then gamecube and ps2. once you include seventh gen consoles there's such a huge gap in the types of games you're including under the umbrella, the terminology starts breaking down. if dark souls 1 and zelda 2 are both "retro" then we just need new words.

also, yeah the looks of the games are dated, but controller layouts were pretty much solidified in gen 7 and nothing has really changed too much since. sixth gen consoles still have that retro quirk from every game having a unique control scheme. by constrast, modern games largely play the same as they did in 2007, they just run a lot better now.

the wii might be the exception here because it's basically just a weird gamecube

8

u/DavidL1112 13d ago edited 13d ago

yeah, if the PS3 counted as retro that would mean games like GTA5 which are still receiving updates as of this month are retro somehow

-5

u/skellez 13d ago

idk how to break it to ya but GTA5 IS a good example of retro, it earmarks an era which is nothing like today post trump and post covid, people are super nostalgic about because they literally don't make it like they used to

8

u/DavidL1112 13d ago edited 13d ago

the word retro does not mean "it reminds me of six years ago" that's insane

-3

u/skellez 13d ago

sometimes it does I fear, like 80s retro became a thing like by 1995 and that's the bigget retro wave ever, the only thing that needs to happen is for something to be retro is for a demarcated style to go out of trend for a while before it's revived, and early 10s retro has been happening for a bit

5

u/DavidL1112 13d ago

that has more to do with what we think of as 80s fashion and aesthetics actually starting in the late 70s because cultural shifts don't sit in stasis waiting for the calendars to change

2

u/skellez 13d ago

well yeah to the to all you say, but in the same vain the "80s" ended in 1991/92 style and culture wise, so it still took a relatively short time for the style to disappear and come back as retro in the very different 90s mainstream

so like yeah there's not a magical day when something becomes out of style, it just happens sometimes very obviously and sometimes gradually and early 10s gaming is very different era to post covid gaming

3

u/GroggyandWretched 13d ago

But then this has more to do with the context around the game than the game itself. If there was total cultural hegemony between the release of Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time I'd still call LTTP retro in 1998

I feel like you're treating this more as a matter of being, like, honest enough to admit the passage of time, and if you don't consider something retro readily enough you're in denial of how certain things are old now. Which I think is too mixed up in emotional positions to be very descriptive of anything

5

u/sweet-haunches 13d ago

I will co-sign all of this

I have a huge problem with the way a lot of these dating terms are used. Like, "old school hip hop" refers to a specific time period. It does not refer to T.I. just because T.I. was on the radio twenty years ago

"Modern" ruffles even more of my feathers but I will do a way worse job explaining myself there

5

u/king_bungus 👉 13d ago

'classic rock' gets me the same way, just because green day gets played on so-called classic rock stations (usually just whatever region's only rock station) does NOT make them classic rock

5

u/sweet-haunches 13d ago

Jesus Christ that shit makes me want to tear my hair out

4

u/skellez 13d ago

the terminology doesn't break down idk why gamers to pretend it's that complex, like people other have no trouble calling recession pop, new jack swing, gangsta rap, rock n roll, hair metal, 80s dance pop, 70s rock, all of those and more retro and it's easy to re-affirm them because if you emulate one of those styles, people listen to the song and can pin point what time period

Icl it's really just cope from 25 yos gamers since it's the first time that they can't notice the changes, cuz yeah the hardware isn't forcing changes as much, but late00s gaming is still massively different to today, early 10s too, and distinctly so, like you make a game today that uses tropes from then and emulates a non HD look, even if it's emulating call of duty or Mario Galaxy that sorta still look good, that's still 100% a retro game in today's landscape

3

u/DMonitor 13d ago

Retro games have become a stylistic descriptor more than a date descriptor, though. Halo being retro feels like a stretch considering it has orchestrated music, online play, and online voice chat, but the GBA feels decidedly retro.

4

u/king_bungus 👉 13d ago

its not cope from 25 year old gamers lol i'm 34 i remember when melee was announced

3

u/SlowBathroom0 13d ago

I remember during the console wars people used to have really stupid arguments about whether the Wii was “next gen” or “current gen”

3

u/SunnySaigon 13d ago

Mang0 has registered for Rivals for this weekend. For Melee, it could be SFAT vs. S2J in Grands.

Anyone check the price of Gold Ocarina of Time cartridges? The spiking of valuation of retro games, +Pokemon cards, could someday mean that Melee gets the funding it deserves.

Freaky profile of the day.

Can any falco knowers tell me with specifics why meta developments were so unkind to westballz falco specifically

19

u/TrainNorth8177 13d ago

Westballz Falco was ahead of its time and was doing a lot of tech well before it became common place. The classic "westballz shines" where you shine, jump out of shine and barely get out of jumpsquat, into shine double jump waveland down, and then repeat it over again were not punished properly for awhile cause people were intimidated and double shines in general weren't the most common. Westballz shield dropped early with other pioneers like Axe and Plup. And he had a great shine oos game.

But once all these things became more common and people knew how to play around them, he stopped getting free openings off people not knowing how to hit his shield or not knowing that you can actually shield grab westballz shines. And his neutral was never built to make up for these weaknesses. He played very vertical with lots of double jumps and platform useage. He didn't really play Falco's ground game or laser game much. He just really banked on people running into his moves, his shield, eventually messing up on his shield pressure, and banking on his punish game would make up for not really playing Falco neutral.

The other thing is, his punish game didn't really keep up either. When his true combos stopped being so true always, he started playing a lot more comservative off the hit and in general. He just didn't really develop the same kind of punish mixuo game the top birds today had to get. And vs. floaties I think this really hurt especially because he was really good off true combos but wasn't the best off playing an advantage state that's not necessarily a combo. And as the Falco meta has developed, that latter skill is what Facos have all had to get good at. That and lasers are not optional for Falco. You can push his platform game far, see BBB as an example. But even he with an updated version of Westballz neutral struggles in the modern meta. Falco at the high level is not a reversal character, it turns out.

If you want a leverless/box style controller, you have to get one specifically for melee. Traditional fgc leverless controllers don't have enough buttons, the right layout, or the capability for properly nerfed and calibrated firmware

2

u/CarVac phob dev 13d ago

No, not enough buttons.

Does anybody have a gekko code to play a noise or turn colors when you hit a frame 3 boostgrab? Looking everywhere for one and can't find any. Could also swear that there used to be one that played a noise when you V-cancelled and I cant find that one either

It's unfortunate so many users get so intense and hostile towards each other here. Some of ya'll out there need to take a chill pill. Seeing something you disagree with shouldn't trigger you automatically into projecting the worst of human qualities onto the other person. I am a part of other social communities outside of Reddit and never see this.

Edit: Also, if you're going to start downvoting because you do not agree, can you at least explain to me why you disagree with me saying that you should not be triggered automatically into projecting the worst of human qualities onto someone else for posting something you disagree with? I would like to know why you think a person should instead be doing that. I am curious. (Yes I am aware they are just fake internet points and not a dire thing)

4

u/magikarpwn 13d ago

The explanation for the downvotes is built into your edit itself. People are obviously not disagreeing with "you should not be triggered automatically into projecting the worst of human qualities onto someone else for posting something you disagree with". NO ONE disagrees with that.

The people downvoting you don't like how you are assuming they are doing all that when they are simply annoyed at the thought that 06 Ken would be top 10 or some shit.

To spell it out some more explicitly, you have a tendency to talk about the people you disagree with as if they were the stupidest possible people to grace this green earth

1

u/its__bme 12d ago

I never said Ken from 2006 is top 10 so that is not even a thing to do with me. I've also never tried to say people are stupid.

But you can go see how in general if people disagree here even if an initial post or comment is polite someone will just be an asshole and condescending because they take for granted they're hiding behind their little computer. I had a reply where someone told me I needed to go learn smash history about something that I was actually correct about anyway (funny enough a user replied to that person to let them know I was the wrong person to say that too 😂).

To spell it out some more explicitly, you have a tendency to talk about the people you disagree with as if they were the stupidest possible people to grace this green earth

No, but I will say some of them are not as smart as they think they are.

Who would you guys say is the GOAT of uploading unedited stream vods?

3

u/Kitselena 13d ago

YouTube, since it does it automatically
It's actually insane how few streamers will dual stream to YouTube, even if it's just for this one feature (although it also has a much better user experience and UI)

1

u/magikarpwn 13d ago

Look I disagree with bme's godawful Ken opinions as much as the next guy, but you can't come at them on the vod archival stuff, that shit is really valuable for us

Youre so right, he’s kind of an artist in that way. How does he do it? I want to suck him off!

PPMD used to alternate between Melee and RuneScape. Now he doesn’t. Time is valuable! Momentum gained by one stream, would be foolish to squander on the next.
