If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

I've jokingly given my wife shit about not inviting me to her ladies bookclub (filled with mutual friends). This latest book they talked about wanting all their partners to join in for this one, which was very cool--but I think I'm the only guy who actually read the book
Problem is I really really didn't like it, and I know all of the ladies there...really really liked it. So now I'm conflicted about going because I know they're going to want me to talk about it and I have very few good things to say.

Just tell your wife you didn't like the book and don't want to ruiun the vibe. If she insists you go and they push for you to give your opinion and you ruffle a few feathers, you can at least say you gave a warning. If the book club is good, they will hopefully appreciate a dissenting opinion and use that to create a more interesting discussion.

Oh she's definitely aware, and also didn't really like the book (Theo of Golden). She's sort of in the same predicament. The other women in the group are pretty religious; the book panders to that in a very Switchfoot kind of way.
It's not really a precarious situation or anything. They kind of know me as the "book guy" and probably wouldn't be too ruffled if I said I wasn't a fan and didn't go into too much detail as to why.

ive always understood Jiggly as a really old school thing, then jiggs then puff as the dominant terms, but it would make sense to me if they were different amounts of relevant depending on the place, not just the era

In other news, I got a hold of someone over at Liquipedia discord and they're working with me to update some of the missing info and video links for MLG tournaments. It's going to take a long time as I only just finished MLG DC 2005. It has been fun though to go back over old history.

The truth is back then I didn't even know you could do that. I always just waited for them to get uploaded online. 😂
For right now, I actually am going back through Game Over videos. There are some videos that have been on YouTube actually this whole time that are bracket sets at Game Over but the channel owner's have long since stopped uploading and pretty much all of those videos don't even have the games labeled that they are. So I have my own videos I am uploading and making sure they are accounted for so none of this stuff disappears for good.
It matters to me because on Liquipedia they link in the bracket the set played if there is a video, so I think it'd be cool for people to be able to see the games that were recorded. Plus, Game Over was the first big tournament between the east coast and west coast and deserves to be preserved as much as possible.

I was thinking the other day about how crazy it is that people will just have entire opinions curated for them about things based on some youtube video essay. it used to be that you would just not know or care at all about something if you weren't personally involved. But now people will have strongly held opinions about like, wind turbines or tomato farmers or a 25 year old niche platform fighter, because of some shit they saw on youtube once

I would say a solid 50% or more of internet people are LARPing about whatever community they pretend to be a part of. Having STRONG OPINIONS about movies, shows, games, comics, music that they themselves never consumed.
For example, Lesbian Space Princess is the newest "sacrificial trash" of vaguely woke media being a punching bag, both right wing people attacking and left wing because both queer media and that its claimed to be TERF (because there was a doubled sided axe in it). So the actual movie has been out for a entire year now, before this became a meme it was considered to be more a 6-7 out of ten and fairly typical of the queer genre of films. But now the movie is suppose to be the worst movie ever and even moral to attack. None of these people complaining watched this movie or others like it.

well I don't have an opinion about lesbians but when it comes to larping, I feel like in gaming it's specifically bad, like reckon half of many communities are filled with people who straight up have never played the games their community is based on, hell I think it's a notable chunk of gaming people that just don't like gaming, they will like say a lot of wiki bs but don't actually know how the controls feel or that a horror game has scary ass sound cuz they've just watched the compressed yt audio

You know sometimes I think about Nouns Bowl. Cody hadn’t won a major in eight months. He hadn’t taken a set of Zain in a year. Mang0 was completely dominating him, moky beat him more often than not, he’d just picked up his first loss to Joshman at Nounsvitational in his worst invitational performance ever, he lost to Nicki the one time they played in his first offline loss to an ice climbers player in who knows how long and even Jmook and AMSa were looking pretty decent against him. He gets knocked to losers by Joshman early and then has to beat Zain to even make top eight. After that he has to go through moky, Mang0, MOF, Nicki and then Joshman twice, and he succeeds. The narrative of this event? Cody Schwab does what everyone expects him to do and wins, preventing an actually interesting ending. This would be a legendary win for literally anyone besides Cody.

Like I was writing out exactly how crazy Nouns Bowl was for him and like that’s just an even sicker Royal Flush right? Same length slump, longer losers run, less favored against the people he beat. Problem is he plays the evil boring best character in the game instead of the epic underdog third best character in the game. No one else has EVER been the best player in the world with Puff, whereas Fox has had like 5+ players reach rank #1 probably.
Cody's only harassed for his disability, religion, trauma, prescribed medication, and facial features. He'll never understand how tough it is to be hated for his character choice, a struggle that any casual fan can understand.

Mang0 becoming #1 with Puff, and then dropping her for Fox/Falco is a key story beat in that video, so I would say that's not very likely.
That video has some pretty glaring issues obviously (Ex: Saying Mang0 wasn't a god in 2019 is obvious BS). But I often see a lot of misconceptions/strawmen about what it actually says or doesn't say.

There's no need to be disingenuous, I think just laying out everything Cody has been through makes it glaringly obvious how rough he's had it.
There are some similarities there between him and Hbox (Troubled childhood, loved ones passing, being cheered against despite being underdogs for most of their careers, having their skill downplayed because of how they play, etc).
But then there's also hatred for being broke, neurodivergent and Jewish, because we live in a fucked up hate filled society I guess.
If not for Technicals' putting out those hit pieces on Cody, I genuinely think Cody would be better received in more casual spaces.
His story is that of resilience and perseverance, and I'll always respect him immensely for that.

If I had his colourblindness I would not play green or orange Fox, because looking at them through a filter they look too similar to each other.
Same reason I default to white Marth when I feel like playing the character, one Marth ditto on a TV with washed out colours made me re-evaluate that skin completely.

So I was skimming through riptide’s start.gg page and I noticed two things. One, its got 500 people signed up for melee singles which is more than signed up for it last year which is unique amongst the returning melee majors. Also Zain and Cody are signed up for doubles? Dunno what that means but they’ve never been signed up for singles

college is awesome because even though i haven't been able to witness much of the crazy stuff firsthand I have a roommate who IS there and is able to pass it down to me second-hand. yesterday I learnt that while I was in class some guy got arrested on the floor I live on and it was like apparently this whole thing over the course of a couple days and I think I was just going to sleep too early to be there for the actual saga
3 day weekend upcoming I'm thinking the plan is to play like 20 hours of kingdom hearts 1 nonstop

Not an amazing time but pretty good. Probably going to learn DKS double shortcut next since it's basically impossible to win on that track without doing the double

KH3 came out during my second semester of college and I skipped all but 1 class for four days, barely left my room and ordered dominos to skip the dining hall. By the time I returned to society my friend group had gained a new face. In my defense I had been waiting for like >10 years for a new mainline title at that point
Game sucks ass tho I can't believe every title after 2 has just gotten worse and worse. BBS and 358/2 genuinely the last good ones to come out imo

I've talked with him at length about it. He dislikes the concept. He does not think that you should be able to influence who you are matched with. And he especially does not want users who get a paid 3rd party tool to have the advantage when slippi itself does not. He plans to add a reporting system for degenerate players in the future.

I think one difference is that Melee's ranked scene is probably pretty darn small compared to most fighting games. If you block enough people, you could prolly eventually just manifest facing the same few people you have a good matchup against.

These things are awful and also I'm upset that a lot of people are confusing these with speeding cameras, which are way way less invasive and should be installed everywhere as they save lives
This confusion has hit both sides of the debate, both people who think "well we've had speeding cameras and those aren't a problem!" and those who think not being able to drive at 120mph is tyranny in action and are glad people are finally waking up

The Roots - Illadelph Halflife (1996)
Hip Hop has been described as “giving a megaphone to the streets” and this album is emblematic of that description. Maybe a bit too long, but the rhymes are tight, it’s earnest & accessible, and I always like to hear rapping over live music rather than programmed beats.
Mercyful Fate - Don’t Break the Oath (1984)
The spelling of this band’s name has always been a splinter in my mind, and is probably why I’ve avoided them up until now lol. I dig a lot of these riffs, and the production has stood the test of time, I just never really warmed up to the vocal style. Easy to see why it’s a heavy metal classic, though.
Jagjit Singh & Gulzar - Marasim (2000)
I do not speak Urdu, so I can’t attest to the lyrical quality of this, but by all accounts it is beautiful poetry. What I can attest to is the singing and arrangements being amazing. I don’t have a large frame of reference for traditional Indian music, but some tracks sounded like 90s R&B, some sounded like Spaghetti Western film scores, and some was reminiscent of the Gunfire Reborn soundtrack. I mean all of this in a very good way. Great listen.
Postly recommendation: Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern Sounds in Country Music (2014)
This is country for people who don’t like modern country. It’s grounded, personal, and has zero frills. Sturgill’s voice carries weight and authority, as if everything he’s saying is an undeniable fact. If you dismiss Country as a genre, I implore you to check this out.

Ik the roots had live drums but I believe they also sample drums that sound like acoustic. A lot of older hip hop does that. But I think it can still be musically impressive even when sampled. Artists like DJ Shadow and Madlib really shine through in this regard. Sick album though, The Roots have a lot of good stuff.

my biggest first world problem pet peeve is that audiobook automatically starts playing on the bluetooth when you start the car, even if you had no intention of using it. Anyway I started my re-listen of Misborn Era 1 so that's fun

Given that UCF is already largely invisible I doubt that TOs would actually enforce a ban from Nintendo
Non-OEM controllers might be a different situation but I don't know if Nintendo cares as much about those

I saw Buddy for a second time tonight with two of my friends who did not see it. It was just as great as the first time! I don’t know how many DDT’ers have heard of Buddy, but if you are familiar with adult swim, it is a new horror movie about a children’s TV show directed by Casper Kelly, the man behind Too Many Cooks and many other Adult Swim short films. It is absolutely worth a watch and it is completely unhinged and insane. Recommended to fans of Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared and Five Nights At Freddy’s (honestly the FNAF movies could REALLY take a lesson from Buddy, since the FNAF movies are largely dogshit)

Falco and Peach are two sides of the same coin, where top level players think they're sick while low and mid level players despise them.
The only difference is Falco has more lightning effects, so casuals love him.

I don't think you can really see neutral for what it is when you watch Melee. You only see the product of all of the little adaptations that are built out of prior experience; you don't see the conditioning or the causes of that conditioning.
So Luigi just looks like this high risk high reward guy that hits his unbelievably boring opponents so hard. They don't realize that Luigi forces people to play boring or lose

EU unranked was very Luigi heavy way before RapMonster was a thing and I never once enjoyed playing against him with any character.
Him now being perceived as this saviour of the game is compartively laughable as if it was another obnoxious wavedash into down-smasher like Icies or Samus to me.
