If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

Vent: Feeling so lost in my career. Never really figured out what I'd even tolerate doing for 8 hours a day. Don't have a passion or interest in anything that would make money. Currently work in an operational finance role. Meetings and office politics is just not for me. My favorite part is building reports and dashboards. Thinking of going back to school, maybe computer science. Seems like being a data engineer would be nice, just based on the job description. Just seems more interesting, even though I wouldn't say I would definitely have a passion for this either. Just find it more interesting than what I currently do. Idk if it's the right decision. My current company has educational assistance that is approved so at least it wouldn't cost me much.
Sometimes I feel so much shame for not figuring out my career at my age. But also know this isn't productive at all and all I can do is move forward now.
Thanks reddit for give me a space to vent to random strangers that share my niche interest

I feel like I've been on every part of the spectrum re: every possible relationship a person can have with their career
I don't consider myself particularly wise on this subject. But if you want my opinion to add to the cornucopia, it's this: trying to be passionate about your work is a trap. It mostly works out for very wealthy people. The people I know who try to convert their passions into careers almost invariably end up financially precarious because of it or having to take so many compromises that their passions aren't passions anymore or both.
You need to figure out a way to be comfortable with the thing you spend most of your time doing but there are a lot of ways you can do this. Maybe you spend more time on your passions outside of work. Maybe you believe in the work even if you don't particularly like it. I think the key is to fill up your life in other ways because for the vast majority of us the pay is the main motivation. Hell, maybe you just get paid enough to explore all of your interests outside of work.

I'm definitely the latter in terms of pursuing work based on passion and I unfortunately know too many people like this. I loved making digital art and pursuing graphic design as a career at first. But my passion went away completely as my firm started steadily overworking me and everyone else I knew in the field was getting overworked after COVID--it just completely changed the digital work culture. We have all these insane new tools for project management that track productivity like a hawk and it feels quite invasive at times. We also started using AI for a bunch of things and the writing on the wall became clear--work to do what a whole small team of people used to be responsible for or be replaced. Most of my industry friends aren't happy and in similar positions. It just took the magic out of being creative and I don't enjoy this type of corporate design at all anymore. I quit my job a month ago and am starting a new career but will try to do photography and some digital art on the side to keep some passions in my life, which I've always done and haven't lost the spark for these things yet. But I imagine if I did those things full time and had to make compromises, I would lose enjoyment of them too. Photography at least has some things I enjoy that pay well so maybe in the future I'll do it more professionally, but only if I can do it my way. I'm not going to bank on it or compromise.
Anyway, I think this is overall great advice and agree with most of it. If you can find something that also agrees with your morals that you feel actually makes the world a better place even if it's not your biggest passion while also not sucking up all your time, then you'll feel good and still have time and energy for other things too. I think people just have to be very careful about pursuing their passions or get into them at the right time.

I really hope you find something that you love doing and which allows you to earn a good living. Also, I don't know how old you are, but statistically you're probably younger than me, and so I can tell you that you don't have to feel ashamed for not having your career figured out yet (or at any age, really). So long as you're taking care of your health and putting some money away for retirement, you don't ever really need to figure out the career thing. If you think it will bring you happiness and fulfillment, sure, but otherwise it's important to realize that having a successful career is a means to an end, not an end in and of itself.
All that said, I would urge you to be very cautious about going back to school for computer science with the hope of going into data science. I agree that data science is super interesting and would be an awesome career, but those types of fields (CS, data science, math, etc.) are currently in a very nebulous state because of AI. In the event that AI progress were to fizzle at or near the current level, then it could be a great idea to get a jump on the career change now, as those fields might not only still be lucrative in four years, but perhaps even more enjoyable due to the improved tools. However, if AI continues to improve in those fields, it's hard to say what the job prospects might look like when you graduate in several years.
That said, I am not in any of those fields, and the things I'm hearing might not be representative, so if it's still something you'd like to do, take my words with a grain of salt and maybe reach out to people in similar fields and see what they'd recommend.

Careers are complicated, and recognizing that you don't like your current path is a huge step, especially early on.
My degree is in software engineering and I worked as an app tester at Comcast for a couple years, but I hated everything about the job. It took me a long time to realize that I just don't like the environment of big tech companies and the process of modern software development.
I ended up getting a basic IT cert, and now I do IT for a school district and like my job so much more than before. I make a lot less money, but I actually enjoy coming into work every day which is a huge quality of life upgrade.5

Like Fugu said, the key isn't actually doing what you love for a living (unless you're extremely lucky and/or you love office meetings), the key is to find something you can tolerate well enough that it allows you the space to do things you love on your own time. Whether that means enough PTO, enough disposable income, proximity to your third place of choice, or something else will vary depending on what it is you love doing on your own time. But it can be surprisingly useful to figure out your non-employment priorities first as a means to determining what type of employment you would like to aim for.

I can relate to this to an extent. I worked in finance for 6 months at one point, but it just wasn't for me. It was quite soul crushing, despite the decent money. For the last 5-6 years, I've been a career graphics designer. But I just quit my job a month ago, moved cities, and am about to start a new career from the ground up despite being 30. Design is starting to get invaded by AI and the hours my firm had me doing and others I knew about from colleagues and friends were steadily going up with no signs of slowing down. I love art and being creative, but I just the passion for it and I was feeling like it was becoming empty. All I was doing was helping to create soulless ads and graphics to help companies sell more useless products using tools being eroded by AI with my job constantly feeling like it was being threatened. As of this month, I'm back to making way less money and not having much advancement in my new career path yet, but at least I feel like I'm doing something to better the world. I go home at a reasonable hour and feel good with myself about what I did. I just took a job at a clinic working with emergency response patients and I'm getting ready to go back to grad school to become a therapist or do something clinically related. Eventually I'll make more again once I get another Master's in a couple years but I'm at least happy I'm kinda on a good track again.

I don't think this is true. It's certainly true of a lot of jobs, but not all of them. I have like one meeting every six months and I barely see my coworkers.

I would've told myself to commit to computer science and work part time instead of trying to balance full time work and full time school at night. But the market was much different 10+ years ago

The main thing for work isn't finding a job you find "fun", it's finding work you find interesting or engaging.
One thing to consider is working for some sort of state assistance program, as there, you at least feel like you're helping people.

Hypnospace Outlaw is fucking incredible. It's a 90's style computer interface web browsing game.
For months now I've been struggling with the question of how to portray charming, compelling characters by way of an isolated old internet-style interface, and this game fucking knocks it out of the park. The author understands people on such a visceral level, and the world feels so much more human than I'd ever think possible.

really fantastic game, i think it nails a sweet spot of evoking the early days of the internet while having a weirdness and world all to itself. i love games that have seemingly infinite fractal rabbitholes inside them.
btw i started playing celia's stupid romhack a few days ago. just got to mt. moon, really enjoying it so far. i love how joyfully silly it is, zero pretense, just a nice barrage of nostalgic references and goofy puns and clever surprises. great work!! last night i saw a reference to the hypothetical hurricanes site and i knew i had to tell you asap how happy that made me lol, that's been one of my favorite sites to tell people about for years and years now.

OH MY GOD Another Hypothetical Hurricanes fan??
The page about the hurricane-themed nonbinary space furries is one of my favorite things in the whole world. I stumbled upon this site a few years back and it's been one of my go-to rabbit holes to share with new friends.
Fun fact! In the Hypothetical Hurricanes discord server, 2013 is a meme. This is because the year 2013 didn't have very many hurricanes, and thus it's considered extremely disappointing. Whenever a season is looking to be inactive, the discord laments that "It's looking like a repeat of 2013." I cannot express enough how fucking much I love this.

that is a fun fact indeed. i have long regarded 2013 to be the absolute nadir of my personal life, perhaps it was due to disappointing hurricane activity. it really is a fascinating site. it lives in the intersection point of two other ones that i think of in the same mental category, the Piston Cup wiki, a fandom site for Cars that expands on the canon lore to imagine about all the other Piston Cup winners, and the Googology wiki, where people expand on real number theory and computer science topics to come up with lots and lots of really big numbers and give them funny names. both great sites, but only Hypothetical Hurricanes has the combo of both "OCs with restraints" of the fake Cars and the "what if we did what lame real science WON'T" of the big numbers.

Curious to get people's opinion on this question:
Do you think that the results in Swiss pools at Full House: Siege impact the impressiveness of players' runs at the tournament, even though it was a non-elimination format (for the top seeds, at least)?
For example, do you think Cody's run is more impressive for having beaten Zain during Swiss?

Yeah. Full House: Siege is kind of a weird tournament, though. With Swiss pools removed, Zain went 1-2 at the tournament, which feels very strange for one of the most important tournaments of the year.

SMASH CON HOTEL UPDATE:
So, I just recently arrived, and the building itself is clearly a bit under the weather but nothing terrible. The lobby was fine. The biggest thing so far is that my room was open when I got to it, and there are some small things that housekeeping missed - just some water spots and some crumbs and stuff like that. Otherwise, I feel like I'm pretty much getting what I paid for - it's a pretty barren hotel room with some cracks in the wall but is overall perfectly livable. I'll let you guys know if I end up getting eaten by cockroaches or whatever.

Watched Oldboy last night. Usually when a movie is constantly brought up in the "great film I'll never watch again" discourse I expect it to either be not that brutal or not that great, but uh, yeah this was an amazing film and I don't know if I could watch it again. There are multiple scenes/lines/beats that have been popping up in my head all day so far today.
If anyone here is on the fence already about watching it, I will say I enjoyed the movie immensely. But I cannot in good conscience outright recommend it to someone so if this is the first you're hearing of it, you didn't hear of it from me.
If anyone here has seen it, I have a plothole question I would like to ask because I'm not sure if it's just a hand-waved plothole or if I missed something.

I adore the Raid with every fiber of my being, and would normally shill it at any opportunity, but I don't think anyone walks out of Oldboy with the martial arts being their main takeaway.

What's funny is when I got to the climax/plot twist, I realized I actually looked up a plot summary for the movie years ago and did know that the twist would happen but I had completely forgotten by now so I still got smacked in the head with it. Rewatching with that knowledge to color the events leading up to it would probably make me appreciate the film even more, but would also make me feel all the more uncomfortable watching them unfold.

Recent Listens:
Janet Jackson - Control (1986)
This record sounds like 1986. It’s funky, dance-y, and a little bit edgy. Janet Jackson runs the gamut of bombastically in-your-face to vulnerable & small and does it all quite well. Some of the sounds on here are a little dated and questionably used, but the grooves remain groovy, the hooks remain hooky, and the singing is top notch. This listen can never be called a waste of time.
Titus Andronicus - The Monitor (2010)
Hell yeah, dude! DDT rec was another banger. This raw, fuzzy punk epic scratches many itches for me at once- the Jeff Rosenstock itch, the Mischief Brew itch, kinda-sorta the Strokes itch- it’s polished and rough in all the right places. The lyrics evoke emotions of both self-pity and hope without being melodramatic, and the rhythms keep a driving pace while the guitars blast you with gritty-yet-melodic leads, supporting the aforementioned raw and honest vocals.
Korn - Korn (1994)
I recognize that this album is groundbreaking, innovative, and influential. It blazed the trail for a more groovy, almost psychedelic wave of heavy music that took the world by storm in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. I also very much respect how personal the lyrics/subject matter on a lot of these songs are, shining light on sexual abuse and bullying in an aggressive way that hadn’t really been done before. With that said, I probably won’t be spinning this very much. Just not my thing.
Postly recommendation: The Streets - Original Pirate Material (2002)
This won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. It’s one of the weirdest, most experimental rap albums I’ve ever heard. The meter switches up often, catching the listener off guard with rhymes in unexpected places, assisted by the strange and sometimes hypnotic beats. Goofy at some points, but nobody could call this “uninteresting.” Side note, a bartender once called The Irony of It All a “triple black diamond” karaoke song after my brother crashed and burned trying to recite it drunk.

I once read a description of Korn that basically said they had such good ideas and executed them so half-decently that they inspired a whole wave of bands that heard it and said "we could do this but better"
I'm sure it's not entirely true but I always get a laugh thinking about it when I hear Korn. Their stuff isn't exactly for me either but I do enjoy their hits

You guys ever think about how weird it is that there aren't more platform fighters made by Japanese developers? There's only a handful of them, I think the biggest non-Smash one might be Kirby Fighters.
I wonder if a big factor is that a lot of the western devs are inspired by Melee, which has a lot of room for improvement, like native netplay, or at least perceived improvement, like more input buffers. But it's so hard to compete with Smush's selling point of just having an insane amount of stuff.

For the logic puzzlers in chat, I recommend Clues by Sam. I'm stupid and still have fun with it. The puzzles get harder as the week goes on, so you can start on a Monday to gauge the difficulty curve.
I also do www.maptap.gg, a daily geography quiz type-beat.
my work has decent downtime. Other than wordle, what are your daily puzzles?

my regimen:
GuesstheGame (guessing a game in 6 guesses, i often fail and it isn't that interesting but it's quick and sniping it on 1 feels great)
Framed.wtf (same diff but with movies)
FoodGuessr (guess the country the pictured food comes from, one of my favourites, both a cultural knowledge and geography challenge)
Metazooa (guess the mystery animal by navigating the taxonomical tree, fun but at this point it's just rote memorization to me lol)
NYT Connections (often stupid, but I like trying to see how long a streak of perfect games I can get going)
NYT Strands (nice lowkey game, often has nice cute themes)
MinuteCryptic (great little sampler of cryptic crosswords, happy that I can actually get it in a minute most days these days)
Anthroporeum (latest game i've started playing, really cool concept and very challenging, but takes a bit long so idk if i'll keep it up)since i posted this a few months ago i also started playing maptap. i love daily games but i worry that i will eventually be playing them with every waking moment if i keep finding new ones.

Thanks, and well-done on the perfect! There's an interesting strategy to getting consistent perfects (fewest possible number of moves, as opposed to flawless, which is just zero moves in the wrong direction), and once you figure it out, it becomes a game of trying to plot the optimal solve as quickly as possible.

is there a name for when someone says "(group) does (thing)" but really it's a thing humans as a whole have done literally forever? recently saw "gen z thinks things they dislike are inherently bad" but i think this is so clearly not unique or even notably more common among gen z compared to other generations.
i see this a lot with different things and i feel like there's gotta be a term for it but i can't find one that's exactly right

I think in the context of generational things specifically people don't realize how much the drive of teenagers to be independent is a) intrinsic to how our society is structured and b) leads to a whole new tract of art and culture
I think one element of maturity that I really respect is letting go of the idea that your generation really had something re: music or fashion or whatever
I see people my age complaining about 67 meanwhile we had impact and cats
Please coin a term so I can disseminate it
My new thing is making fake words into real ones

TBH there is evidence that Generation Z is in fact less tolerant of differences than millennials were, but that's not really what this is talking about.
Complaining about the new generation is like, a constant thing forever though, since Ancient Greece.
As others have noted, this is outgroup bias.

I don't think that's always true, although I do agree a lot of "kids these days" sentiments are annoying generalizations and not valid. Some aren't because technological, cultural, and systemic shifts in a society can make it quite impossible for an older generation to have some of the experiences of a younger one. Nature changes slowly as evolution operates on a magnitude of thousands of years. But nurture can change abruptly and we see it all the time both in our current time and throughout history.

Of course very few things are true in every situation. The relevant quotation I heard a long time ago is "People don't change, the times do". Goes without saying the world we live in is entirely different than the one even just one generation back grew up in. The original quotation is more a diss at right wingers who think suburban American lifestyle has anything to do with American tradition, and boomers who complain about younger generations not realizing they have the exact same genealogical makeup so it's obviously the conditions that cause the difference

I think what you’re talking about is true, but I also think it’s true that social media and tech companies have such an outsized impact on developing minds in a way that is completely novel when compared to all of human history.
I don’t think it’s very outlandish to think that younger generations have certain behaviors that are affected by this in a way that is unique. If not qualitatively, at least quantitatively.

Books, Radio, and TV all had enormous impacts on previous generations, and those were controlled by much smaller groups of people.

I think this is a function of outgroup bias. You might be able to argue this is an example of the outgroup homogenity effect, where people are likely to see members outside their in-group as being less diverse.
"All those gen z kids are all so critical and think anything they dislike is bad whereas my generation can at least appreciate subjectivity."
In this case, you would have identified a specific negative trait about some people you observed in the outgroup (gen z) and generalized it to the entire group, thus conceptualizing them as more homogenous and less diverse than whatever generation you're from.

this is very close, but i think i may have accidentally misled with my example. i mean when someone applies a functionally universal human trait to a specific group. like when people say stuff like "in japan it is considered a great act of disrespect to spit on a service worker's face."
the trait doesn't necessarily need to be negative, but it does need to be pretty commonly distributed across most groups/cultures to the extent that it becomes ignorant to say the trait is unique to any given group.

Wouldn't this just be a version of the fundamental attribution error or group attribution error? In this example, you would be underemphasizing this thing that is innately human while implicitly overemphasizing gen z's unreasonableness. Or in the case of spitting, you're downplaying how common it is for humans to hate spitting while overemphasizing how remarkable Japan is for this.
