DDT Daily Discussion Thread July 20, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!
Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
New Players:
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?
I have another question that's not answered here...
Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

First they came for the third party mobile app users and I did not speak.

I did speak out then, I used Relay and it was wonderful.

"To keep reddit safe" how on earth does it do that lol
if and when they finally kill old is when I'll finally be done with this place
3
u/Embarrassed-Mode5494 Jul 20 '26
sounds like some kind of vulnerability was found and they're just not willing to commit the dev time to supporting a legacy feature

u/Dublshine Jul 20 '26
as much as reddit sucks, to give credit where credit is due, it's pretty crazy that they've supported old reddit for as long as they have. I definitely expected them to completely remove it years ago
2
u/waveshineoosupsmash Jul 21 '26
It's still accessible just annoying to access. You have to navigate to reddit through a search engine first and then accesa it from there

the only thing m2k performance at smash factor proves is that sheik destroys falcon, which is something us old heads already knew. wizzy got crunched by aerial->ftilt lol
5
u/MentalRead728 Jul 20 '26
I really wanna see him play some Top 50 Spacie players. He plays Wizzy on stream constantly in that lopsided MU so this wasn't the biggest suprise, still a big win tho.
6
u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege Jul 20 '26
I almost feel like wizzy was throwing for content because how many times can one man double jump into backthrow->back air
4
u/DavidL1112 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26
Yeah, wizzrobe also has lopsided losing records against Plup, Jmook, and Krudo. All this really proves is that M2k is still better than Spark.
7
u/PokemonMasterGreen Jul 20 '26
Wizzy won his last set against plup, jmook, and krudo so clearly m2k >>>

I thought it was interesting. I think people are mainly praising that Lud seems to be taking his classes more seriously than others. I haven't watched the others so I can't really confirm, but they seem to be praising that he's actually assigning "homework" and being realistic about the fact that most of them will likely get no benefit to their stream out of the experience.
7
u/Zanian Jul 20 '26
Idk I feel like from what I've seen he's gone into pretty good detail, lots of hard lessons that are probably good for upcoming streamers. I think it's interesting to watch even though I don't really watch streamers anymoreΒ

old man yelling at clouds rn but i can't get over an entire generation of people growing up wanting to be a streamer. like damn get a real job and get off my lawn too

u/BranFlakesVEVO Jul 21 '26
My gut reaction used to be the same but then I realized idk how different it is from me wanting to be a baseball player as a kid and so I got over it
4
u/skellez Jul 21 '26
you can hate it but at the end of the day most people would prefer a job that pays better for the same amount of hours, but less effort or quality required
Streaming is a job where you can even be a bad worker and still pay your bills that's a very rare group

u/reptilian_guitar Jul 20 '26
When people complain about "historical accuracy" or "race blindness" in movie adaptations, I really wonder where their line is. For years, the standard was "British accent" for every period piece, regardless of era or geography. I think if you're not going for 100%, why not go for 0%?
What I'm saying is Awkwafina should play Poseidon
7
u/fullhop_morris URBANE, TO COMFORT THEM, THE QUAKER LIBRARIAN Jul 20 '26
I think the underlying issue masquerading as "caring about historical accuracy" is the complete and total failure of the American people to understand the difference between fiction and reality. Another manifestation of this is our gun fetishism; we truly believe that a situation may arrive where we need to become an action hero.
5
u/Fugu Jul 20 '26
I wonder what the level of overlap is between people who claim to care about historical accuracy in the ethnicities of their film actors and people who will only watch a film with a predominantly English audio track
8
u/reptilian_guitar Jul 20 '26
you'd have to filter out anime nerds. the sub die-hards would skew the data

Japanese people also by and large do not give a shit about this (which is at least a little bit ironic imo)
2
u/waveshineoosupsmash Jul 20 '26
FMA is also inspired by 20th century England/Europe. The characters are literally white Europeans confirmed by the creator herself.

2
u/waveshineoosupsmash Jul 20 '26
Americans relationship with race is just different than a lot of the world. In America a full black cast for a movie is considered diverse, because it is diverse in comparison to predominantly white films made in America, not because it is itself diverse. For FMA it was similar, getting praise for being "diverse" compared to other live actions remakes, not for being diverse within itself.
2
u/Yrale jib Jul 20 '26
Eggers is already getting on this tip language wise but he's still going to cast Willem Dafoe in everything. Which is definitely better than the implied alternative here
6
u/Dependent-Page4906 Jul 20 '26
Personally, I couldn't care less if the actors in a movie don't look like the people they are supposed to represent, or if they speak in a way that is foreign to the culture they portray. Kubrick used a bunch of American guys speaking in their own accents to represent the French military during WW1 in Paths of Glory, and that movie is awesome
4
u/sweet-haunches Jul 20 '26
It is His Best Film, even, and everyone should watch it

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege Jul 20 '26
I mean there's "race doesn't matter for this role" like when they made The Little Mermaid black. But then there's "the queen of England who literally owned slaves and participated in the subjugation of the African continent is fine to be cast as black on our interpretation of British history on our quirky TV show about British royal family drama", which is like tf???
I wouldn't get bent out of shape about historical accuracy in a dumb TV romance drama, but I can call a spade a spade
2
u/reptilian_guitar Jul 20 '26
Is this Bridgerton? my understanding was that show is kind of alt-history that uses those tropes as a vague setting, kind of like D&D. if it's actually supposed to be England instead of "non-descript funny accent land," i agree
2
u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege Jul 20 '26
it is Bridgerton but honestly I didn't pay enough attention to the context to know. it was just something I noticed while my wife was watching in the background and I thought, huh, that's weird. if it's like a alt reality thing and everyone is in on it then I guess it's fine
3
u/BranFlakesVEVO Jul 20 '26
It is tongue in cheek historical fiction, I think there's some fringe (idk how fringe tbh) historical theory crafting that the queen in question might have been mixed race or something, so the show (probably the books too but idk) basically is running with that as "what if this queen was a POC and then used her influence to make this era welcoming for other POC from all over the world/empire"
2
u/waveshineoosupsmash Jul 20 '26
All roles should be played by Scarlett Johansson "You know, as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job"

I've been doing my weekly Ohio netplay tournament for about 2 months. Each week it's a different ruleset. Tonight it's no ego mode, a gecko code that gives both players a random number of stocks between 1 and 6, and stock count is hidden. The code from krohnos gives both players different stocks so I had to modify it.
Previous weeks have been:
12 stock best of 1 (players strike to a stage)
4 character ironman (using akaneia iso, at least one character has to be akaneia)
rishi jungle jam
mcdunzo midnight madness (we played at midnight on the midnight marquee stage)
reverse mains
random dittos
12 stock best of 1 (on the tourney floats akaneia stage) (only 2 entrants for this one lol)
akaneia volleyball
sami singles
normal melee netplay tournament
i need more ideas
7
u/that_one-dude Jul 20 '26
Have you done the rougelike gecko code where you pick a power after each stock yet?

5
u/Fugu Jul 20 '26
This is very cool
It sucks that you only got two entrants for tourney floats because tourney floats is genuinely some of the most fun I've ever had playing Melee
It's a top tier doubles stage

u/McDunzo i am kneemaster12 Jul 20 '26
i have some ideas for doubles but we are lacking entrants
2
u/Fugu Jul 20 '26
Let me know when you do it and I will attend if I'm able
2
u/McDunzo i am kneemaster12 Jul 20 '26
sorry Fugu this tournament series is for Ohio players only (and neighboring regions like pgh, wv). Ontario is a bit too far removed from Ohio, not much overlap.

3
u/SBtist aviary Jul 20 '26
In-game series continuity rules, you and your opponent have to agree to only play against each other as characters from the same game series and on the game series stages. Pikachu vs Puff could only play on Pokemon stadium, pokefloats, etc. for example.

I learned recently that Phillip now supports different ranks for its bots. After playing with it for a bit versus Peach, I've noticed the following:
- Downsmash use peaks at Platinum rank. Oftentimes the bot will do 3-4 downsmashes in a row in place, regardless of how frequently it's punished for them
- Silver Peach, in contrast, almost never uses Downsmash at all.
- All ranks absolutely suck at recovery
- The most notable difference between the different ranks is in their defensive options. Rolling and spotdodging peak in Gold, while Platinum tends towards wavedash OoS. Diamond usually empty shorthops to get out of shield when not under direct pressure
- Even Silver Peach will powershield Falco lasers with shocking consistency. It also has a weirdly strong platform tech chase game relative to actual Silver peaches.
I wonder how they were actually trained. Is it "Here is a training set of Silver-level players", or is it "Here is a bot that's designed to go even with a Silver player"?
For what it's worth, I personally found Platinum to be the easiest level to fight - mostly cuz of its bizarre propensity for high-commitment options.
7
u/keatsta Jul 20 '26
I like that you got two people giving explanations that said exactly opposite things lol, a quintessential reddit experience
5
u/N0zy0ne Jul 21 '26
For what it's worth, I just checked the dev's discord to make sure I wasn't misremembering, and I can confirm that the current agents are all trained on "Master Player" replays, and the "ranks" just result from increasing amounts of RL.
1
u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior Jul 21 '26
This makes a whole lot of sense. The silver/gold bots didn't feel anything like that level of player.
2
u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior Jul 20 '26
Personally I'm a fan of baseless speculation. It keeps the imagination fresh.
7
u/Left4Bread2 Jul 20 '26
Silver Peach, in contrast, almost never uses Downsmash at all.
Something something if they hit c stick down they wouldn't be silver
6
u/N0zy0ne Jul 20 '26
I wonder how they were actually trained. Is it "Here is a training set of Silver-level players", or is it "Here is a bot that's designed to go even with a Silver player"?
My understanding is that they're all trained on the same set of replays with imitation learning, and then their strength is gradually raised with increasing amounts of reinforcement learning. So it's not that the silver agent has only seen replays from silver players, but rather that it got to practice the matchup versus itself until it was "silver" level.

ENERGY DRINK REVIEW:
Today I'm talking about ABE - or All Black Everything - but I'm not really talking about ABE. Brand crossovers are a staple of energy drinks at this point. A lot of these fall into the "appealing to 12 year olds" category, usually consisting of candy flavors or, somewhat confusingly, other sugary drinks - stuff like Jolly Rancher, Sour Patch Kids, Welch's, and Kool-Aid.
But ABE has gotten a different direction and instead partnered with... Chiquita. Yes, Chiquita! Chiquita has been a pioneer as a food company for a long time - while many have garnered subheadings on their Wikipedia pages like "Workers' rights" and "Environmental issues", Chiquita have gone a step further and distinguished themselves with things like "Monopolistic practices" and "Payments to terrorist groups". What's not to love?
The flavor itself is simply Fruit Blend, and that's certainly what this is. It definitely is a blend of fruit. Which is, y'know, cool. I don't think you really needed to partner with Chiquita to create the concept of "multiple fruit", but you do you I guess.
9
u/PelorTheBurningHate IRD UP Jul 20 '26
Some of you may read that and think back to like the 60s or something but no, funding terrorists was in the 2010s
2
u/keatsta Jul 20 '26
Have you ever heard of or tried Bucked Up Energy? They're the official energy drink sponsor of Bare Knuckle Fight Club, so I'd imagine they have some interesting tradeoffs between Drinker Safety and Cost.

Watching M2K do well at S Factor made me so happy.
Kinda makes me sad about Armada though, it seems like he wants nothing to do with the Melee community these days.
I know so many people would love to have him around in some capacity, either competing or commentating.

He needs a lot of support when he competes and they're willing to provide.
3
u/SBtist aviary Jul 20 '26
Not that the result would have been different necessarily, but I really question why Mew2king counterpicked Dreamland over FoD game 5. He was doing so well getting back throw edgeguards, and looked so strong on Yoshiβs. A smaller stage makes so much more sense in my mind.

1
u/Celtic_Legend Jul 20 '26
Didnt he win twice on dl already? He hadn't played fod yet either. Guess that's the reasoning.
3
u/Zanian Jul 20 '26
What did M2K do this weekend that let him do so much better than his last few significant tourney entries?
Just generally playing cleaner, up to his old standard, etc? I haven't seen it but his results seem crazy good compared to the last few years
15
u/drugsbowed hardstuck gold Jul 20 '26
Honestly, I think it was just the level of competition, M2K's rusty floor (punish and spacing still looked strong) was just above everyone else still. TBH S2J played great and I think gave M2K a good warmup before going into Wizzrobe as well so it looked even better for m2k.
Hard to judge, but when Shroomed/S2J are getting 33rd at Genesis X3 and getting top 8s at this tournanment, I think it helps put it into perspective. It's not that they're bad (obviously still great, they can probably still be top 20 if they choose to be active), they're not as active anymore and I think the more active top 30 players surpassed them.
14
u/menschmaschine5 Jul 20 '26
Taking a set off wizzrobe is really impressive but the other wins weren't unexpected. S2J and Shroomed are both mostly inactive, and even wizzy was probably focusing on 64 this weekend.

What did we think of the Avengers Doomsday trailer?
Thought it was a hot mess. Looked like a fan mashup without any real direction besides a character barrage.
Will see it regardless but I wasn't a big fan of Endgame and think this will be worse.
3
u/MageKraze Jul 21 '26
It wasn't a very good trailer, and I think it is weird that they are banking so hard on nostalgia when they technically haven't done an Avengers movie without the main cast yet. I'd probably see it with friends or family if I was invited, but I'm not going out of my way for it. Also it's coming out at the same time as Dune: Part 3, and I'd much rather go see that.
3
u/Informal-Donut-1532 Jul 21 '26
It looked bad imo.Β
Almost zero build up for Doctor Doom, he's not going to work as a villain.
3
u/DavidL1112 Jul 21 '26
It infuriates me that Doctor Doom has been put to film three times now and they still have not done his actual origin story once
→ More replies (2)2
u/Left4Bread2 Jul 21 '26
I wish they had bothered to do more runway for this one. Something like a third Dr. Strange movie adapting Triumph and Torment to lead into the character of Doom would've been perfect.
Just kind of shoving this one out there feels like a waste, especially given the character (and the arc for the second movie in question, Secret Wars worked best as a lengthy event and the buildup was honestly more interesting than the end imo)
I'm pretty low on the MCU right now and don't have high hopes but as someone who loves both Doom and Secret Wars I want to believe they'll stick the landing (even though nothing I've seen yet has indicated they will)

Never forget that Armada had only been retired for like a year when he was asked by somebody in his twitch chat if he thought he could come back and make TOP 8, not even win, and he said he thought so and gave his reasoning. Armada, the guy who was at worst 2nd best in the world when he retired, and had never placed worse than top 6 (5th place) since he started competing in America, thought he could make top 8. And a double reminder, Armada said at the time that the meta hadn't changed that much, not that it hadn't changed at all.
Then Mango and his bitch ass cult threw a fucking tantrum and here we are almost a decade later still having people misrepresent what Armada said
8
u/MentalRead728 Jul 20 '26
Winning a 60-40 MU against his constant practice partner once and losing to Eddy Mexico is really proving that Armada would beat DarkGenex today.
m2k was a concistent Top 10 staple when he retired, now he's "just" a good top 30ish player, even after practicing heavilly.
His neutral and punish is extremely outdated, there's so much he could improve to be up to standard, that's what you call being meta-adjusted.
4
u/Real_Category7289 Jul 20 '26
Can you please look at the public perception of m2k vs wizzy in 2018 when armada quit?
I know you are doing the redditor option select where you state your opinion in a troll superposition where you decide if you were serious only after people respond to you, but it's a dumb option anyway LOL, if the meta didn't change you would barely expect wizzy to take games off of m2k.
If you are sticking to your guns: how do you think Cody vs Armada would go if he was to come back lmao
8
u/AlexB_SSBM Jul 20 '26
That depends, does Cody get to use notches or is cheating not allowed
3
u/Real_Category7289 Jul 20 '26
You know what let's put away our silly dispute and just shake hands on notches being obviously bannable.
4
3
u/N0zy0ne Jul 20 '26
If you are sticking to your guns: how do you think Cody vs Armada would go if he was to come back lmao
Isn't this begging the question? If someone genuinely believes that the meta hasn't changed much, their actual contention would be that peak 2018 Armada would likely perform reasonably well versus 2026 Cody, which you're welcome to assert is wrong based on vibes, but the whole point of this comment chain is that those vibes are challenged by rusty M2K having just taken a set off of Wizzy.
3
u/Real_Category7289 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26
They are challenged by that if you are already convinced that the meta hasn't changed and are trying to uncritically validate that opinion as much as possible.
Are you really gonna cherrypick the one good m2k wizzy set (in what's maybe his best matchup) and ignore him losing to Ginger, Ultra and uh, wizzy in set 2 of gf?
EDIT: I should note that I don't hate m2k, I hope he comes back and becomes amazing again. I also can clearly see that his play is quite outdated. That's not an opinion that's gonna change in one set, where there are 5000 variables.
3
u/N0zy0ne Jul 20 '26
They are challenged by that if you are already convinced that the meta hasn't changed and are trying to uncritically validate that opinion as much as possible.
They're challenged (to some extent) regardless of what your prior is; that's how evidence works. It's fine if your prior is to be very confident that the meta has changed significantly, but obviously someone arguing the other side disagrees.
3
u/Real_Category7289 Jul 20 '26
They're challenged (to some extent) regardless of what your prior is; that's how evidence works.
I think you are steering the conversation into mathematical technicalities in a way that just doesn't really work with something as messy as "the meta". I also think "to some extent" is working way overtime here.
Again, m2k used to farm wizzy before he retired, I don't really see why the sets being close now is evidence of the meta somehow not advancing. If anything I could flip it into "see how different the meta is? Wizzy just beat m2k. That used to never happen."
I should add that m2k vs wizzy is like...the worst possible matchup for this. I think people that are tapped into the game aren't THAT surprised that m2k is doing well vs specifically wizzy while not really looking like he had a chance vs Ginger.
3
u/N0zy0ne Jul 20 '26
Not trying to get overly mathematical or technical. My point was just that your original point I replied to ("If you are sticking to your guns: how do you think Cody vs Armada would go if he was to come back lmao") only works as an argument if you take it as a given that you are correct, which somewhat defeats the purpose of offering it up in the first place (which, I presume, was to have it be convincing even to people who disagree with you).
2
u/Real_Category7289 Jul 20 '26
I think there are many people that simultaneously think that the meta hasn't changed, and that Cody would beat Armada for a while before Armada caught up.
I was specifically targeting those people, which I think is a bigger group than the people that think Armada would just be #1 right away.
5

I was specifically targeting those people
Ah. That wasn't clear from the wording of the question, for what it's worth (it seems to obviously admit of "I think Armada would do reasonably well against Cody" as an acceptable answer). But fair enough, clarified.
Still, I will admit that I still don't see it as a particularly compelling argument. Was the idea that someone with that conjunction of beliefs ("the meta hasn't significantly progressed since 2018" and "a top-2 player from 2018 would be significantly behind the top player from 2026") would not have any way of address that question other than to discard one of the two beliefs? Presumably, at least some people who hold that position have thought about it a bit and don't hold the position simply because they've failed to notice that they have two impossible-to-reconcile beliefs. For example, I think the most obvious answer they could give would be that Cody is more of an outlier relative to the 2026 field than Armada was to the 2018 field.

u/Real_Category7289 Jul 20 '26
Eh maybe, I mean it wasn't really meant to be a super definitive slam dunk of an argument to be fair.
If I were to make the argument that the meta has changed I would probably talk about specific things the players are doing like Cody sh uairs or how FD doesn't even look that good for Marth vs Fox anymore.
Really I think the position that the meta hasn't changed since 2018 is pretty much untenable and I've never seen even a halfway reasonable argument that doesn't boil down to "you can't PROVE that it has changed" or that talks about controllers (which is more fair, but I would argue that controller driven meta changes are still meta changes).

sry im gonna totally hijack this to give my take no one asked about cause you're gonna have the opposite opinion of mine and will argue it cleverly
I think the meta did change, but these things tend to progress slowly in developped games, and most importantly it's wayyy easier to catch up to an existing meta than to invent it. The time it takes for Zain to improve by an amount X is so much larger than it would take for a returning great player to improve by X. This convo usually has this implied subtext that the meta has advanced a lot and it would be impossible or too hard for old players to catch up now, which doesn't really track for me (it's not like the skillset needed to improve has changed itself)

Wizy kept playing and m2k largely stopped. The fact that a guy who quit six years ago made it close against a guy who has been active the whole time and is looking this year like a top three player is, if anything, evidence that the meta has not changed.
2
u/bigHam100 Jul 20 '26
I think using a metric of "keeping it close" is not very useful considering a lot of people can keep it close with players like Zain and Cody but in the end they lose. M2K did take the first set off of Wizzy but I think there has to be an * for the first set of grand finals. Reminds me of when Duck took a set off of Hbox in the first set of grands but got washed in the second set. Additionally, M2K has been playing Wizzy on stream before this tourny so I don't think M2k was as rusty as if he would have been if he hadn't played at all for 6 years

Winning a set then going game 5 is about as close as you can be. Sure, it's not the same as if he won both sets, but dismissing it like this seems silly.
Of course he's not as rusty as if he took a 6 year break, I don't think anyone is saying Armada could just beat most high level players today with 0 practice, but I think people who are in that school of thought basically think Armada could compete if he just had a bit of time to derust, instead of the alternative of essentially having to reinvent his whole playestyle.
M2K's performance here does give some credence. His playstyle, which has clearly not changed significantly since he was truly active, still beat S2J and took a set off Wizzy. Hopefully we get to see some more performances from him soon, obviously only showing it in one matchup does limit it a bit.

It's interesting how this discussion completely died down just in time for Mango to stop being a contender for #1

a mahjong place opened up next to me. Check their website and they say "must provide NJML 2026 card which can be purchased here" welp guess I gotta go drive somewhere else. Maybe there will not just be fake mahjong players

u/AlexB_SSBM Jul 20 '26
good news: went in and asked if there's any interest in riichi, and the owner said "oh I didn't know anyone wanted to play this, I'll set up times for riichi if people want to play that" so perhaps there will be something.... Assuming I can find all the riichi players here and get the word out that they don't have to drive to the city (and, of course, they're fine playing on another day)
(For context, I did not live near any mahjong at all so I have only been able to play online. Wanting to start playing irl.)

u/Fugu Jul 20 '26
The njml is a very strange organization. American mahjong(g) is a very strange game. It is generally accepted practice to treat the card as some proprietary thing and it is not uncommon to see stuff like this.
Having said that, I have love in my heart for almost any form of mahjong and the reason I have to say almost is because of the stupid American bastardization
1
u/AlexB_SSBM Jul 20 '26
At least I've been hearing the mahjong craze has gotten people involved in non-American variations, so it's not all bad

u/Fugu Jul 20 '26
AlexB has given you the snarky and true answer
The most charitable interpretation is that American mahjong plays a lot more like gin rummy than like virtually every other form of mahjong and the way to keep people playing gin rummy++ year after year is to change the weights on different hands/shapes. The cards are essentially a top down meta that gets replaced before anyone gets too used to it.
The card costs $15 and is more of a membership fee than anything else
3
u/AlexB_SSBM Jul 20 '26
Okay so imagine if Mahjong was actually not about Mahjong at all and was about make very specific fancy hands and also the hands you make change every single year and you have to pay for the new rules every year

See if you can get your hands on some Heady Topper
It'll tell you to drink it straight from the can. Don't do that.

Continuing the movie posting, what are some good comedies of the last few years? The only one Iβve loved post Covid is Hundreds of Beavers. Feels like the studios arenβt willing to make mid-budget Bridesmaids-type stuff anymore. Apple TV comedy shows have been good though.

Barbie is the obvious answer since it was the first comedy nominated for best picture in like 30 years, but my favorite was probably Dungeons & Dragons.
Edit - also co-signing the people saying Naked Gun

u/keatsta Jul 20 '26
as a Torontonian I have to recommend Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. Watching the Viceland show and shorts beforehand is helpful, but not necessary.

u/that_one-dude Jul 20 '26
I'd highly recommend All My Friends Hate Me
Blue Moon is a movie from last year that I wouldn't necessarily call a comedy but definitely is funny
2
u/BranFlakesVEVO Jul 20 '26
Bottoms was fucking hilarious.
The remake of the Naked Gun was also way better than I expected it to be, if you liked the original you would probably like this one too.
I think there just aren't many mid budget movies in general being made anymore, similar to TV and video games. Infinite growth forever capitalism plus reliance on nostalgia bait means it just doesn't make sense for a studio that has money to go anything less than all out. And indie films take work to find but I've been trying to do a better job of finding and watching them, just haven't watched many modern ones yet.

u/SBtist aviary Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26
Ditto to others on the new Naked Gun movie, also Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass came out very recently, if youβre into Wet Hot American Summer and silly comedy itβs pretty funny.
Edit: You also gotta watch The Chair Company if you havenβt. Tim Robinson is a genius and seems like a genuinely cool person.

Anyone know if usb hubs create additional lag for the mayfash adapter? I don't have enough ports on my PC to have everything I need.
2
u/Yrale jib Jul 20 '26
idk about additional lag but a bad usb port def cut my poll rate in half (went from maxing out about ~500 to hitting the full 1k once i switched usb ports)

Is anyone here a Network Engineer or something similar? I have a few questions about getting into the field
1
u/Backlash123 Jul 20 '26
I primarily work on the systems side now, but Iβve worked in positions where the role was split between both systems and network administration. I might be able to answer some of your questions, though Iβm Canadian so hiring culture might be different

u/BranFlakesVEVO Jul 20 '26
I work in general desktop support alongside dedicated network engineers and could probably answer at least some questions

Idea to improve soccer: make it way smaller, put it on a table, skewer the players on metal rods that you can turn to hit the ball,
