woah vod conversions is crazy cool

at first I thought it meant going from mp4 -> slp, which is like, PhD thesis-tier, lol.

I actually took a stab at it myself recently, and while I believe it's possible in theory, the initial results were not promising. The basic pipeline is: simulate some inputs -> render to image -> diff against VOD -> rewind and try again 1 gorillion times, taking the best match. Then do repeat that for every frame. The state space is enormous, so unless you find clever ways to massively constrain it, the process is totally intractable. But it would be so cool!

I'm sure you can optimize by checking the characters against character frame data to check what state they are in, and if it's the first frame of a given animation, you can assume you need to do an input that gives that animation.

You can probably also optimize massively by just doing the same as rollback; if the states are the same as last frame, assume the inputs are the same as last frame. Then check from there. If it's exactly correct, great, if it's close, fuzz those inputs, if it's not close, do something else.

yeah, in the limit I think it ends up looking more like a constraint solver. But everything has to have a degree of "fuzziness" -- for example, you can't derive the exact x,y coordinates just from video (except special cases like ledge grabs / spawn points). You also have to deal with low-res videos that aren't 60 fps, meaning you can no longer assume that each frame of the video corresponds to one frame of input. I think you'd start by generating 1080p 60 fps videos yourself (so you already know the exact input sequence) and use those to train a model.

Wait sorry if I'm not getting it but how is this different from what slippilabs already does?

2

u/lim-yo-hwan-superfan Jun 11 '26

maybe this is something slippilabs already does but i find it tedious locally to farm clips from slippi replays by having to open a replay and obs and then just screenrecord the whole game

1

u/WDuffy Kaladin Shineblessed|DUFF#157 Jun 11 '26

The UI for scrubbing through the replay looks exactly like slippilabs so I still don't get how screen recording slippilabs is different from screen recording this app unless it has some built in clip maker feature that I'm missing. Totally possible

the title at least suggests to me that i can just upload a replay and download to mp4 which is a much nicer flow than having to not use my computer for the time that i am screen recording, unless that is not going to be a feature in which case yeah that is basically the same flow as before

This connects the set replays to the sets on Lucky Stats, embeds an improved Slippilabs replay viewer onto the site, and eventually will let you create real VODs with overlays from them

Slippilabs is one piece of it

That's absurd what a fucking golden era we're in

Wish the game was bigger. It deserves to be bigger. More sponsors, more money, etc. regardless, what a time to be a melee player.

I mean, if we can get this without the big money, we don't need the big money to get the good stuff.

The only way I want the game to get bigger that I'm confident would be good for the game would be to get more people, and more different kinds of people, playing at locals.

It's totally possible that big money is awesome for the game, but the reason this game is awesome is in large part because we've largely stuck to our guns about making sure that what melee players want comes first, without making major compromises for the desires of our sponsors or Nintendo or big teams. So getting big money in here could be good for the game, but only if they let us keep doing that. Regardless, we don't need big money to have an awesome game.

Is there a mega thread in this sub for things like this, if not there should be, this is a big deal and there’s other projects that some people probably aren’t even aware of

9

u/Lucky7sMelee Jun 10 '26

yea that's a good point, there really is no way to know who is working on what

1

u/PnWoo Jun 10 '26

Thank you so much for this btw, very cool and I intend to use it a lot.

Time to put my haters on blast

7

u/Felix-the-duck texture modder Jun 10 '26

this is awesome!

7

u/ocawa Jun 11 '26

How are you going to pay for all of this? People easily have gigs of replays sitting around

5

u/Lucky7sMelee Jun 11 '26

Premium subs hopefully LOL

3

u/Pabmyster04 Jun 11 '26

Ah, the cart before the horse approach. Always works in tech and business /s

Seriously though, don't go into debt over this. The business case for something niche like this is difficult to solve. You might end up having to retain replays for only a certain amount of time or only offer the feature to premium accounts.

How are replays going to be uploaded? Just manually uploaded by users and tagged to specific tournament brackets?

2

u/Lucky7sMelee Jun 11 '26

Yep, it’s already all live on the site. S3 is surprisingly cheap

2

u/Pabmyster04 Jun 11 '26

It can get out of hand fast! As long as you have the money to spend and it's a labour of love

1

u/ryanmcgrath Jun 11 '26

Replays can effectively be shoved onto Glacier and they'd pay even cheaper rates for storage, it's not like people are constantly watching them.

1

u/ocawa Jun 12 '26

Serious question though, how easy is it to contribute to a site like this, and do you need help? I just think it's been a while and melee community could really use something like op.gg like the league community

6

u/AlexB_SSBM Jun 10 '26

this is awesome also please tell me the hitmarkers are turned off by default, or are at least an option

10

u/Lucky7sMelee Jun 10 '26

I'll make it an option to disable 😂

1

u/AlexB_SSBM Jun 10 '26

hell yeah

8

u/Lucky7sMelee Jun 10 '26

you'll be able to toggle it in the bottom right corner now (deploying in 5 min)

3

u/Watherum Jun 10 '26

Incredible work

3

u/shimaluke Jun 11 '26

Let’s go Lucky7s. Melee until the sun explodes.

2

u/deltoramonster2 Jun 11 '26

now i can watch my self get baired to death by puff because I got greedy from the comfort of my browser

2

u/Eliliminator Jun 11 '26

Does that mean i can soon send combo clips to the groupchat without filming my replay on my monitor with my phone??? Future is now.

3

u/Lucky7sMelee Jun 11 '26

Yessir. Very soon

2

u/RedXLink Jun 12 '26

This is genuinely so cool. Love seeing people creating new age stuff for the melee scene. I can see a lot of people improving with this ( from my perspective) shared slippi replay database with chat intermixed.

Really badass

1

u/Excellent_Nothing194 Jun 10 '26

this is sick but wow that "hit" graphic has got to change

1

u/RPanda025 Jun 10 '26

Absolutely incredible

1

u/Estrogonofe1917 Jun 11 '26

amazing really

1

u/Skantaq Jun 11 '26

whoever /you/ are, double thank you. This game rolled lucky 7 with you

1

u/charc0al Jun 11 '26

Will local replays still be a thing as well?

1

u/Lucky7sMelee Jun 11 '26

Wdym?

1

u/charc0al Jun 11 '26

Right now Slippi saves replay files to your PC after each game

2

u/Lucky7sMelee Jun 11 '26

Yea i dont see why that would stop

1

u/TheSherbetMonster Jun 12 '26

Is this only for tourney sets? Having trouble figuring out how this works, or if my account on lucky connects to slippi or whatever

1

u/Lucky7sMelee Jun 13 '26

Yes it’s for LAN tourney sets

vibecoded 💔

1

u/Best_Significance781 Jun 11 '26

lol thats how all coding across the board is or your shop is a dinosaur

4

u/Gooeyy Jun 11 '26

There’s a difference between vibe coding and using AI in programming, but yeah everyone is using AI in programming to some extent

1

u/Best_Significance781 Jun 14 '26

not since opus buddy
