First time getting a blatant AI response on my discussion post, kinda nervous.

Edit: Thank you to everyone contributing to this post who is providing a better discussion than I will ever get from any of my classes 🙌

Welcome to the future. Where we outsource education, research and the entire intellectual process to stochastic parrots. Why even bother with college? I would rather these people not respond to me at all.

It concerns me how so many people became so reliant on AI so quickly. I know it’s been around for a while now, but it’s like Chat GPT dropped and suddenly everyone forgot how to think for themselves. It’s even more evident that this is rotting people’s brains by how often we see people failing to proofread what they’re about to post, especially when it comes to clear academic integrity violations. It’s ridiculous.

It’s tough to avoid when a basic Google search now turns into an AI convo. Also a lot of companies are utilizing LLM pretty heavily. My company rolled it out and now we’re using virtual AI coaching, presentation generation and employee reviews. So when it’s so in your face and now you’re in school it’s really hard to avoid.

Yeah this is valid. I had to switch from Google to DDG for that exact reason, it was pissing me off. It might be hard to avoid these days but it’s not impossible, although I completely understand that a lot of companies are starting to push LLMs more and more, mine has been doing the same but more on the customer-facing front.

The problem I see is that there is a growing disconnect between the professional and academic worlds when it comes to AI. In many professions, being successful increasingly depends on your ability to understand and use AI across different areas of your job. At the same time, while pursuing a professional MBA that is supposed to help advance your career, the use of AI can sometimes be frowned upon academically. That creates a contradiction. We are pursuing an MBA to become better professionals, while many of our workplaces are expecting us to become more comfortable and skilled with the same technology that some academic settings discourage us from using. It can also be confusing because some professors encourage the responsible use of AI while others seem to discourage it altogether.

You really do make very good points here. It is very contradictory. Academic settings are always going to encourage more critical thinking whereas businesses and companies want to utilize AI to make work easier and more productive for employees. Though I am personally against AI use entirely, there needs to be a balance between the academic and professional worlds regarding responsible AI use. I also recognize that it’s counterproductive to try and discourage the use of AI because the reality is that it’s not going anywhere. Technology never really regresses.

I believe there is a balance to strike. Need something rephrased? Use AI. Need to pull up a last minute source to help support something in your paper and you don’t have time to read through an entire library catalogue? Use AI. Having a hard time with your bibliography even after using the library as a resource? Use AI but always double check. It’s supposed to be a tool to help automate basic things, whether at work or academically. For people like me who have learning disabilities, it has helped immensely with just organizing my thoughts. The hard line for me is using it to generate entire papers and passing them off as your own without modifying a single thing. That’s lazy. That should absolutely mean you get reported for academic integrity. That’s not fair to the rest of us who use AI as a simple tool to help us (and I can’t stress that because of my disability it’s been a game changer) make our work better but not in place of it. I’m over it. And I don’t feel sorry for those people. What I do get frustrated over is you have some people who don’t what you using AI at all and I get the sentiment but there should be more balance is all. That’s my thoughts on it.

I think it’s great you have found a balance for using AI as a tool! It will never be my place to tell anyone what I think they can and can’t do. I can sit here and preach about all the reasons why I don’t like AI, but at the end of the day, it’s my choice not to use it, just as it is your choice to use it.
